  • Single Photon Sources and Single Quantum System enabled Communication
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Quantum information is a highly interesting and fast emerging field that involves processing information encoded into quantum systems and their subsequent use in various information tasks. The use of quantum resources such as superposition and entanglement have shown to enhance information processing capabilities beyond classical means in a number of communication, information and computation tasks. In this thesis, we have used single photons to study the advantage of d-level quantum systems (qudits) for a communication task commonly known as random access codes (RACs). A successful experimental demonstration of quantum random access codes (QRACs) with four dimensions is realized to demonstrate that the higher dimensional QRACs not only outperform the classical RACs but also provide an advantage over their quantum bit (qubit) counterparts. QRACs are also studied in regards to two specific applications: certification of true randomness and for testing the non-classicality of quantum systems. A method for increased certification of generated randomness is realized for the former and a successful experimental demonstration of a test of non-classicality with arbitrarily low detection efficiency is provided for the latter. This is followed by an implementation of a QRAC in a one-path communication network consisting of preparation, transformation and measurement devices. We have shown that the distributed QRAC provides optimal success probabilities for a number of tasks. Moreover, a novel quantum protocol for the solution to the problem of dining cryptographers and anonymous veto voting is also presented. This single photon transmission based protocol provides an efficient solution, which is experimentally demonstrated for a 3-party description. Lastly, Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center in diamond is studied as a potential resource for single photon emission and two methods to enhance the photon collection efficiency are successfully explored. Due to this enhancement, single photons from an NV center may also be used in similar single quantum system based communication experiments.

  • Optimal work extraction from quantum states by photo-assisted Cooper pair tunneling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 3:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The theory of quantum thermodynamics predicts fundamental bounds on work extraction from quantum states. As these bounds are derived in a very general and abstract setting, it is unclear how relevant they are in an experimental context, where control is typically limited. Here we address this question by showing that optimal work extraction is possible for a realistic engine. The latter consists of a superconducting circuit, where a LC-resonator is coupled to a Josephson junction. The oscillator state fuels the engine, providing energy absorbed by Cooper pairs, thus producing work in the form of an electrical current against an external voltage bias. We show that this machine can extract the maximal amount of work from all Gaussian and Fock states. Furthermore, we consider work extraction from a continuously stabilized oscillator state. In both scenarios, coherence between energy eigenstates is beneficial, increasing the power output of the machine. This is possible because the phase difference across the Josephson junction provides a phase reference.

  • Hybrid thermal machines: Generalized thermodynamic resources for multitasking
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - 2643-1564. ; 2:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal machines perform useful tasks, such as producing work, cooling, or heating by exchanging energy, and possibly additional conserved quantities such as particles, with reservoirs. Here we consider thermal machines that perform more than one useful task simultaneously, terming these hybrid thermal machines. We outline their restrictions imposed by the laws of thermodynamics and we quantify their performance in terms of efficiencies. To illustrate their full potential, reservoirs that feature multiple conserved quantities, described by generalized Gibbs ensembles, are considered. A minimal model for a hybrid thermal machine is introduced, featuring three reservoirs and two conserved quantities, e.g., energy and particle number. This model can be readily implemented in a thermoelectric setup based on quantum dots, and hybrid regimes are accessible considering realistic parameters.

  • Self-testing nonprojective quantum measurements in prepare-and-measure experiments
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 6:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-testing represents the strongest form of certification of a quantum system. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate self-testing of nonprojective quantum measurements. That is, how can one certify, from observed data only, that an uncharacterized measurement device implements a desired nonprojective positive-operator valued measure (POVM).We consider a prepare-and-measure scenario with a bound on the Hilbert space dimension and develop methods for (i) robustly self-testing extremal qubit POVMs and (ii) certifying that an uncharacterized qubit measurement is nonprojective. Our methods are robust to noise and thus applicable in practice, as we demonstrate in a photonic experiment. Specifically, we show that our experimental data imply that the implemented measurements are very close to certain ideal three- and four-outcome qubit POVMs and hence non-projective. In the latter case, the data certify a genuine four-outcome qubit POVM. Our results open interesting perspective for semi-device-independent certification of quantum devices.
