    • Results of the study of structural and optical properties of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films obtained by sulfitation (selenization) of Cu2ZnSn films which were sputtered by target direct current magnetron sputtering using a stoichiometric Cu2ZnSn (99.99%) target are presented. It has been found that Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films are polycrystalline with a grain size of ~60 nm. The optical bandgap of Cu2ZnSnS4 (Eg op = 1.65 eV) and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (Rg op = 1.2 eV) thin films have been determined.

    • Background The Swedish national quality register for electroconvulsive therapy (Q-ECT) contains data on patients receiving treatment with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in Sweden. Aim This study determined the validity of diagnoses, treatment dates, and rating scales in the Q-ECT by investigating the degree of accordance between data from the Q-ECT and patient records. Materials and methods From January 2016 to December 2017, 200 treatment series were randomly selected from the Q-ECT. The corresponding patient records were requested from the treating hospitals. Data on the indicative diagnosis, dates for the first and the last ECT session, and rating scales were compared between the Q-ECT and patient records using (i) a strict and (ii) a liberal method of assessment. Using the liberal method, each variable was assessed as accordant if it belonged to the same diagnosis group, or if the dates differed by less than 1 week, or ratings differed by only 1 point on the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI- S), or no more than 3 points on the Montgomery angstrom sberg Depression Rating Scale between the Q-ECT and the patient record. Results A total of 179 patient records were received. The strict method of assessment showed an accordance of 89% or higher for all studied variables. The liberal method showed an accordance of 95% or higher. Conclusions We conclude that data on the studied variables in the Q-ECT have high validity. However, limited use of some rating scales makes the results uncertain. Measures can be taken to further improve the data quality.

    • The formation of ice particles in Earth's atmosphere strongly influences the dynamics and optical properties of clouds and their impacts on the climate system. Ice formation in clouds is often triggered heterogeneously by ice-nucleating particles (INPs) that represent a very low number of particles in the atmosphere. To date, many sources of INPs, such as mineral and soil dust, have been investigated and identified in the low and mid latitudes. Although less is known about the sources of ice nucleation at high latitudes, efforts have been made to identify the sources of INPs in the Arctic and boreal environments. In this study, we investigate the INP emission potential from high-latitude boreal forests in the mixed-phase cloud regime. We introduce the HyICE-2018 measurement campaign conducted in the boreal forest of Hyytiala, Finland, between February and June 2018. The campaign utilized the infrastructure of the Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR) II, with additional INP instruments, including the Portable Ice Nucleation Chamber I and II (PINC and PINCii), the SPectrometer for Ice Nuclei (SPIN), the Portable Ice Nucleation Experiment (PINE), the Ice Nucleation SpEctrometer of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (INSEKT) and the Microlitre Nucleation by Immersed Particle Instrument (mu L-NIPI), used to quantify the INP concentrations and sources in the boreal environment. In this contribution, we describe the measurement infrastructure and operating procedures during HyICE-2018, and we report results from specific time periods where INP instruments were run in parallel for inter-comparison purposes. Our results show that the suite of instruments deployed during HyICE-2018 reports consistent results and therefore lays the foundation for forthcoming results to be considered holistically. In addition, we compare measured INP concentrations to INP parameterizations, and we observe good agreement with the Tobo et al. (2013) parameterization developed from measurements conducted in a ponderosa pine forest ecosystem in Colorado, USA.

    • MoOx/n-CdTe photosensitive heterostructures were prepared by the deposition of molybdenum oxide thin films onto three different n-type CdTe substrates (ρ1=0.4 Ωfirst>cm, ρ2=10 Ωfirst>cm, ρ3=40 Ωfirst>cm) by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The height of the potential barrier and series resistance of the MoOx/CdTe heterojunctions were investigated. The dominating current transport mechanisms through the heterojunctions were determined at forward and reverse biases.

  • Graphite/p-SiC Schottky Diodes Prepared by Transferring Drawn Graphite Films onto SiC

    • Graphite/p-SiC Schottky diodes are fabricated using the recently suggested technique of transferring drawn graphite films onto p-SiC single-crystal substrates. The current–voltage and capacitance–voltage characteristics are measured at different temperatures and at different frequencies of a small-signal AC signal, respectively. The temperature dependences of the potential-barrier height and of the series resistance of the graphite/p-SiC junctions are measured and analyzed. The dominant mechanisms of the charge–carrier transport through the diodes are determined. It is shown that the dominant mechanisms of the transport of charge carriers through the graphite/p-Si Schottky diodes at a forward bias are multi-step tunneling recombination and tunneling described by the Newman formula (at high bias voltages). At reverse biases, the dominant mechanisms of charge transport are the Frenkel–Poole emission and tunneling. It is shown that the graphite/p-SiC Schottky diodes can be used as detectors of ultraviolet radiation since they have the open-circuit voltage Voc = 1.84 V and the short-circuit current density Isc = 2.9 mA/cm2 under illumination from a DRL 250-3 mercury–quartz lamp located 3 cm from the sample.

  • Soot-doped natural snow and its albedo - Results from field experiments

    • Soot has a pronounced effect on the cryosphere and experiments are still needed to reduce the associated uncertainties. This work presents a series of experiments to address this issue, with soot being deposited onto a natural snow surface after which the albedo changes were monitored. The albedo reduction was the most pronounced for the snow with higher soot content, and it was observed immediately following soot deposition. Compared with a previous laboratory study the effects of soot on the snow were not as prominent in outdoor conditions. During snowmelt, about 50% of the originally deposited soot particles were observed to remain at the snow surface. More detailed experiments are however needed to better explain soot’s effect on snow and to better quantify this effect. Our albedo versus soot parameterization agreed relatively well with previously published relationships.

    • Background/objectives: Preterm infants are at risk of iron deficiency (ID). In the Netherlands, preterm infants born after 32 weeks of gestational age (GA) do not receive iron supplementation on a routine basis. We hypothesized that dietary iron intake in these infants might not be sufficient to meet the high iron requirements during the first 6 months of life.Subjects/methods: In a prospective cohort study, we analyzed the prevalence and risk factors of ID in 143 infants born between 32+0 and 36+6 weeks GA who did not receive iron supplementation.Results:ID at the age of 4 and 6 months was present in 27 (18.9%) and 7 (4.9%) infants. Results of a multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that ID was associated with lower birth weight, a shorter duration of formula feeding, more weight gain in the first 6 months of life and lower ferritin concentrations at the age of 1 week.Conclusions: Preterm infants born after 32 weeks GA have an increased risk of ID compared with those born at term, supporting the need of iron supplementation. Our results suggests that measurement of ferritin at the age of 1 week might be useful to identify those infants at particular risk and could be used in populations without general supplementation programs. However, the efficacy and safety of individualized iron supplementation, based on ferritin concentrations at the age of 1 week, together with other predictors of ID, needs to be further investigated, preferably in a randomized controlled trial.
