  • Studying the ISM at ∼10 pc scale in NGC 7793 with MUSE : I. Data description and properties of the ionised gas

    • Context. Studies of nearby galaxies reveal that around 50% of the total H alpha luminosity in late-type spirals originates from diffuse ionised gas (DIG), which is a warm, diffuse component of the interstellar medium that can be associated with various mechanisms, the most important ones being leaking HII regions, evolved field stars, and shocks.Aims. Using MUSE Wide Field Mode adaptive optics-assisted data, we study the condition of the ionised medium in the nearby (D=3.4 Mpc) flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 7793 at a spatial resolution of similar to 10 pc. We construct a sample of HII regions and investigate the properties and origin of the DIG component.Methods. We obtained stellar and gas kinematics by modelling the stellar continuum and fitting the H alpha emission line. We identified the boundaries of resolved HII regions based on their H alpha surface brightness. As a way of comparison, we also selected regions according to the H alpha/[SII] line ratio; this results in more conservative boundaries. Using characteristic line ratios and the gas velocity dispersion, we excluded potential contaminants, such as supernova remnants (SNRs) and planetary nebulae (PNe). The continuum subtracted HeII map was used to spectroscopically identify Wolf Rayet stars (WR) in our field of view. Finally, we computed electron densities and temperatures using the line ratio [SII]6716/6731 and [SIII]6312/9069, respectively. We studied the properties of the ionised gas through BPT emission line diagrams combined with velocity dispersion of the gas.Results. We spectroscopically confirm two previously detected WR and SNR candidates and report the discovery of the other seven WR candidates, one SNR, and two PNe within our field of view. The resulting DIG fraction is between similar to 27 and 42% depending on the method used to define the boundaries of the HII regions (flux brightness cut in H alpha = 6.7x10(-18) erg s(-1) cm(-2) or H alpha/[SII] = 2.1, respectively). In agreement with previous studies, we find that the DIG exhibits enhanced [SII]/H alpha and [NII]/H alpha ratios and a median temperature that is similar to 3000 K higher than in HII regions. We also observe an apparent inverse correlation between temperature and H alpha surface brightness. In the majority of our field of view, the observed [SII]6716/6731 ratio is consistent within 1 sigma with n(e)< 30 cm(-3), with an almost identical distribution for the DIG and HII regions. The velocity dispersion of the ionised gas indicates that the DIG has a higher degree of turbulence than the HII regions. Comparison with photoionisation and shock models reveals that, overall, the diffuse component can only partially be explained via shocks and that it is most likely consistent with photons leaking from density bounded HII regions or with radiation from evolved field stars. Further investigation will be conducted in a follow-up paper.

  • Metal-enriched Neutral Gas Reservoir around a Strongly Lensed Low-mass Galaxy at z = 4 Identified by JWST/NIRISS and VLT/MUSE
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 944:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at z ≳ 4 provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Very Large Telescope/MUSE, and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass (≈107.6 M ⊙) galaxy at z = 3.98 (also see Vanzella et al.). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including C iv λ λ1548, 1550, He ii λ1640, O iii] λ λ1661, 1666, [Ne iii] λ3868, [O ii] λ3727, and the Balmer series of hydrogen from this galaxy, indicating a metal-poor H ii region (≲0.12 Z ⊙) powered by massive stars. Further, we detect a metal-enriched damped Lyα system (DLA) associated with the galaxy with the H i column density of N H I ≈ 1021.8 cm−2. The metallicity of the associated DLA may reach the supersolar metallicity (≳Z ⊙). Moreover, thanks to JWST and gravitational lensing, we present the resolved UV slope (β) map at the spatial resolution of ≈100 pc at z = 4, with steep UV slopes reaching β ≈ −2.5 around three star-forming clumps. Combining with low-redshift analogs, our observations suggest that low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies, which dominate reionization, could be surrounded by a high covering fraction of the metal-enriched, neutral-gaseous clouds. This implies that the metal enrichment of low-mass galaxies is highly efficient, and further supports that in low-mass galaxies, only a small fraction of ionizing radiation can escape through the interstellar or circumgalactic channels with low-column-density neutral gas.

  • Synthetic photometry of OB star clusters with stochastically sampled IMFs : analysis of models and HST observations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 509:1, s. 522-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a pilot library of synthetic NUV, U, B, V, and I photometry of star clusters with stochastically sampled IMFs and ionized gas for initial masses, Mi = 103, 104, and 105 M⊙; t = 1, 3, 4, and 8 Myr; Z = 0.014 and Z = 0.002; and log(US) = −2 and −3. We compare the library with predictions from deterministic models and observations of isolated low-mass (<104 M⊙) star clusters with co-spatial compact H II regions. The clusters are located in NGC 7793, one of the nearest galaxies observed as part of the HST LEGUS and Hα-LEGUS surveys. (1) For model magnitudes that only account for the stars: (a) the residual |deterministic mag - median stochastic mag| can be ≥0.5 mag, even for Mi = 105 M⊙; and (b) the largest spread in stochastic magnitudes occurs when Wolf–Rayet stars are present. (2) For Mi = 105 M⊙: (a) the median stochastic mag with gas can be >1.0 mag more luminous than the median stochastic magnitude without gas; and (b) nebular emission lines can contribute with >50 per cent and >30 per cent to the total emission in the V and I bands, respectively. (3) Age-dating OB-star clusters via deterministic tracks in the U-B versus V-I plane is highly uncertain at Z = 0.014 for Mi ∼ 103 M⊙ and Z = 0.002 for Mi ∼ 103–105 M⊙. (4) For low-mass clusters, the V-band extinction derived with stochastic models significantly depends on the value of log(US). (5) The youngest clusters tend to have higher extinction. (6) The majority of clusters have multi-peaked age PDFs. (7) Finally, we discuss the importance of characterizing the true variance in the number of stars per mass bin in nature.

  • HST FUV Spectroscopy of Super Star Cluster A in the Green Pea Analog Mrk 71 : Revealing the Presence of Very Massive Stars
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 958:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mrk 71 is a low-metallicity (Z = 0.16 Z☉) starburst region in the local dwarf galaxy NGC 2366, hosting two super star clusters (SSCs A and B), and it is recognized as a Green Pea (GP) analog with SSC A responsible for the GP properties. We present STIS and FOS far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of the embedded SSC Mrk 71-A obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The STIS FUV spectrum shows the characteristic features of very massive stars (VMS; masses >100 M⊙) and we derive an age of 1 ± 1 Myr by comparison with the Charlot & Bruzual suite of spectral population synthesis models with upper mass limits of 300 and 600 M⊙. We compare the STIS spectrum with all known SSC spectra exhibiting VMS signatures: NGC 5253-5, R136a, NGC 3125-A1, and the z = 2.37 Sunburst cluster. We find that the cluster mass-loss rates and wind velocities, as characterized by the C iv P Cygni profiles and the He ii emission line strengths, are very similar over Z = 0.16–0.4 Z☉. This agrees with predictions that the optically thick winds of VMS will be enhanced near the Eddington limit and show little metallicity dependence. We find very strong damped Lyα absorption with N(H i) =1022.2 cm−2 associated with Mrk 71-A. We discuss the natal environment of this young SSC in terms of radiatively driven winds, catastrophic cooling, and recent models where the cluster is surrounded by highly pressurized clouds with large neutral columns.

  • Extreme broad He ii emission at high and low redshifts : the dominant role of VMS in NGC 3125-A1 and CDFS131717
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 523:3, s. 3949-3966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Super star cluster (SSC) A1 (3.1 x10(5) M-circle dot) in NGC 3125 has one of the strongest ( EW = 4.6 +/- 0.5 A) broad ( F W H M = 1131 +/- 40 km s(-1)) He II lambda 1640 emission lines in the nearby universe and constitutes an important template for interpreting observations of extreme He II emitters out to redshifts of z similar to 2 - 3. We use Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observations of A1 to show that there is no significant contamination of the He II line with nebular emission and that the line is redshifted by 121 +/- 17 km s(-1) relative to ISM lines. We compare the COS G130M + G160M observations of A1 to recent binary BPASS and single-star Charlot & Bruzual (C&B) simple stellar population (SSP) models with very massive stars (VMS) of up to 300 M-circle dot. On the other hand, we suggest why BPASS models fail to reproduce A1's He II emission. On the other hand, a C&B model with Z = 0.008, age = 2.2 Myr, and VMS approaching the Eddington limit provides an excellent fit to the He II emission and fits reasonably well C III lambda 1175, N V lambda lambda 1238, 1241, and C IV lambda lambda 1548, 1551. We present O V lambda 1371 line-profile predictions showing that this line constitutes an important tracer of youth and VMS in galaxies. Finally, we discuss the presence of VMS in CDFS131717, a highly star-forming low-metallicity galaxy located at z = 3.071, which has a tentative detection of O V absorption and strong broad He II emission. These features are rare and hint to the presence of short-lived VMS in the galaxy. Our results show the effect of the latest developments of stellar wind theory and the importance of accounting for VMS in models.
