  • Dogs as Sentinels for Flavivirus Exposure in Urban, Peri-Urban and Rural Hanoi, Vietnam
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Viruses. - : MDPI. - 1999-4915. ; 13:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diseases caused by flaviviruses, including dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis, are major health problems in Vietnam. This cross-sectional study explored the feasibility of domestic dogs as sentinels to better understand risks of mosquito-borne diseases in Hanoi city. A total of 475 dogs serum samples from 221 households in six districts of Hanoi were analyzed by a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) for antibodies to the pr-E protein of West Nile virus and other flaviviruses due to cross-reactivity. The overall flavivirus seroprevalence in the dog population was 70.7% (95% CI = 66.4-74.8%). At the animal level, significant associations between seropositive dogs and district location, age, breed and keeping practice were determined. At the household level, the major risk factors were rural and peri-urban locations, presence of pigs, coil burning and households without mosquito-borne disease experience (p < 0.05). Mosquito control by using larvicides or electric traps could lower seropositivity, but other measures did not contribute to significant risk mitigation of flavivirus exposure in dogs. These results will support better control of mosquito-borne diseases in Hanoi, and they indicate that dogs can be used as sentinels for flavivirus exposure.

  • Recycled pangasius pond sediments as organic fertilizer for vegetables cultivation : strategies for sustainable food production
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1618-954X .- 1618-9558. ; 25:2, s. 369-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intensive Pangasius aquaculture farming contributes to increased income and profits in Vietnam, but is also associated with many environmental problems, including pollution from nutrient-rich water and sediments that are released into the environment. This article investigates the feasibility of using Pangasius pond sediments (PPS) in combination with amendments of rice straw (RS) to fertilize cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forssk) plant. The results showed that mixing a ratio of 30% PPS with 70% RS produced the highest nutrient concentrations. The study demonstrates that organic fertilizer produced from PPS in combination with chemical fertilizer can replace 2575% of the inorganic fertilizers used as a nutrient source for cucumber and water spinach, and also increase the vegetable production. The highest yields were found for treatment PPS-3 (a combination of 50% chemical fertilizer and 50% organic fertilizer used on cucumber), and for treatment PPSRS-4 (a combination of 25% chemical fertilizer and 75% organic fertilizer used on water spinach) in both the wet and dry season (P˂0.05). The lowest yields were found when growing cucumbers and water spinach either with 100% organic fertilizer (the treatment PPS-5) or with 100% chemical fertilizer (the control treatment PPS-1), respectively (P˂0.05). Overall, the results indicated that the recycling of PPS as organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer in combination for vegetable cultivation is more environmentally friendly as compared to using only chemical fertilizers.

  • Zoonotic Flavivirus Exposure in Peri-Urban and Suburban Pig-Keeping in Hanoi, Vietnam, and the Knowledge and Preventive Practices of Pig Farmers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease. - : MDPI. - 2414-6366. ; 7:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), including those caused by flaviviruses, remain human health problems for developing and urbanizing economies. This cross-sectional study examined risks of flavivirus exposure through a survey regarding knowledge and practices of pig farmers, and serological analysis of pigs in peri-urban and suburban Hanoi city. A total of 636 pig sera from 179 pig farms in 4 districts, namely, Chuong My, Dan Phuong, Ha Dong, and Bac Tu Liem, were analyzed by a competitive ELISA designed for flavivirus antibody detection. The results indicated a low level of awareness about MBDs among pig farmers, and a high seroprevalence in pigs at 88.5% (95%CI = 85.8-90.9%). Moreover, common practices of pig owners to prevent mosquitoes at home and farm did not show a significant reduction in flavivirus exposure in pigs. At animal level, significant associations between seropositive pigs and the farms with more than 60 pigs, and the district location were found. Farm-level multivariable analysis did not identify significant risk factors for flavivirus exposure. The study suggests that improving awareness of pig owners about MBDs in Hanoi city may be warranted to reduce the risk for MBD flavivirus infections in both humans and pigs.

  • A review on integrated approaches for municipal solid waste for environmental and economical relevance : Monitoring tools, technologies, and strategic innovations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-8524 .- 1873-2976. ; 342
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid population growth, combined with increased industrialization, has exacerbated the issue of solid waste management. Poor management of municipal solid waste (MSW) not only has detrimental environmental consequences but also puts public health at risk and introduces several other socioeconomic problems. Many developing countries are grappling with the problem of safe disposing of large amounts of produced municipal solid waste. Unmanaged municipal solid waste pollutes the environment, so its use as a potential renewable energy source would aid in meeting both increased energy needs and waste management. This review investigates emerging strategies and monitoring tools for municipal solid waste management. Waste monitoring using high-end technologies and energy recovery from MSW has been discussed. It comprehensively covers environmental and economic relevance of waste management technologies based on innovations achieved through the integration of approaches.

  • Effects of Hydraulic Retention Time on Organic and Nitrogen Removal in a Sponge-Membrane Bioreactor
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Environmental Engineering Science. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1092-8758 .- 1557-9018. ; 30:4, s. 194-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is the first study on application of a sponge-membrane bioreactor (sponge MBR) for recirculation of aquaculture wastewater in the Mekong delta, Vietnam. Performance of a sponge MBR with a moving-cube sponge medium (20% v/v) was evaluated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) for the specific example of catfish pond wastewater. The sponge MBR was operated at HRT values of 8, 4, and 2 h, which correspond to membrane fluxes of 5, 10, and 20 L/m(2) per hour, respectively. The average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were maintained at 93%, 94%, and 87% at an HRT of 8, 4, and 2 h, respectively, while the average total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies were 84%, 70%, and 57%. The COD and TN removal efficiencies decreased with a decrease in HRT (increase in membrane flux). Permeate concentrations of COD and TN were as low as 6.3 and 2.7 mg/L at the operated HRTs, respectively. Compared to the conventional MBR, the sponge MBR had twice the TN removal capacity at the same HRT due to simultaneous nitrification-denitrification. In addition, results implicated that the fouling rate (dTMP/dt) increased in an inverse proportion with HRT (h) according to the power equation (fouling rate = 4.2474 HRT-2.225). Free movement of sponges in the reactor improved fouling due to sweeping of the cake layer on the membrane surface. Results reveal that the sponge MBR was effective in terms of simultaneous organic and nitrogen removal, fouling control, and water recirculation.

  • MC-OCR Challenge : Mobile-Captured Image Document Recognition for Vietnamese Receipts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2021 RIVF International Conference on Computing and Communication Technologies, RIVF 2021. - : IEEE. - 9781665404358 ; , s. 88-93
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes the organisation of the "Mobile Captured Receipt Recognition Challenge"(MC-OCR) task at the RIVF conference 2021 1 on recognizing the fine-grained information in Vietnamese receipts captured using mobile devices. The task is organized as a multi-tasking model on a dataset containing 2, 436 Vietnamese receipts. The participants were challenged to build a model that is capable of (1) predicting receipt's quality based on readable information, and (2) recognizing textual information of four required information (i.e., "SELLER", "SELLER ADDRESS", "TIMESTAMP", and "TOTAL COST") in the receipts. MC-OCR challenge happened in one month and top winners of each task will present their solutions at RIVF 2021. Participants were competing on CodaLab.Org from 05th December 2020 to 23rd January 2021. All participants with valid submitted results were encouraged to submit their papers. Within one month, the challenge has attracted 105 participants and recorded about 1, 285 submission entries.
