    • Green Train (in Swedish, Gröna Tåget) is a research, development and demonstrationprogramme with the overall objective to define an economical, flexible and environmentallyfriendly train concept. The objective is also to develop technology for futurehigh-speed trains for the northern European market, particularly for Scandinavia. Mostof the technology developed is also applicable to other world markets, as well as toslower trains. The programme has covered many important areas, including economy, capacity and market aspects, conceptual design, traveller attractiveness and interiors, travel time, energy efficiency and noise, winter performance, track friendliness and carbody tilt, aerodynamics, electric propulsion and current collection. The programme hasconducted fundamental analysis and research on the different issues as well as designand testing of new technologies. A number of crucial technologies have undergoneperformance and type testing both in lab and on a test train. Experience feedback wasachieved in commercial train service during the period 2006−2013 including harshwinters. This paper summarises a great deal of research and development that has beenperformed in the Green Train programme.

  • Rail Vehicle Dynamics Simulation-based decision support for novel block brake material implementation in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: THE 26TH IAVSD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON DYNAMICS OF VEHICLES ON ROADS AND TRACKS, 12-16 August 2019, Gothenburg, Sweden. - Cham : Springer International Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • . The application of TSI Noise in Sweden needs decision support that can objectively state system-wide benefits and disadvantages, as there are issues with the introduction of novel block brakes: reduced braking performance and increased equivalent conicity. The Roll2Rail Universal Cost Model (UCM) is used to analyse Life Cycle Cost (LCC), as it was also conceived so that it could be used within the decision making processes of infrastructure managers. The simulated characteristics are mainly track Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) due to the worsened dynamic train-track interaction.

  • Track damage prediction for Universal Cost Model applications
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 25th IAVSD Symposium on Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and Tracks. - : CRC Press. - 9781138035713
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the EU project Roll2Rail, a Universal Cost Model (UCM) is developed, where innovations in running gear can be analysed within a simplified Life Cycle Cost (LCC) frame- work regarding its impact in energy, noise, vehicle damage and track damage. In this paper we describe the developed methodology for track damage calculation, demonstrate a study case for a regional train, and extrapolate the differential costs of different vehicle technologies in infra- structure. The results and implementation of the damage calculation methods are discussed, and the benefits of a unified methodology for a wide range of stakeholders are presented.

  • Review of the existing energy labelling systems and a proposal for rail vehicles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part F, journal of rail and rapid transit. - : SAGE Publications. - 0954-4097 .- 2041-3017. ; 235:4, s. 518-528
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions are becoming very essential worldwide. To encourage the development and application of energy-efficient and low-emission technologies and to increase people's awareness of energy-saving, many energy labelling systems are developed and utilized in most countries. Since energy labelling systems have a significant impact, more and more sectors are developing their energy labelling systems to have their products included. Globally, the transport sector consumes a great proportion of energy and is responsible for considerable CO2 emissions. Although rail vehicles have relatively high energy efficiency, a labelling system has not been developed in the railway sector, whereas other modes of transport have developed energy efficiency indicators or energy labelling systems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an energy labelling system for rail vehicles to promote rail transport and develop the technology of rail vehicles. First, this paper gives a review of the existing energy labelling systems. Second, it summarizes the rail needs and rail stakeholders’ interests regarding energy efficiency and corresponding labelling. Last but not least, a proposal for an energy labelling system for rail vehicles is given.

  • An approach to improve railway rolling noise calculations in CNOSSOS-EU: Refinement and validation using TWINS calculations
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The reliability of CNOSSOS-EU methodology for evaluation of railway noise is dependent on the quality ofinput values that define the system’s excitation and transfer functions. Currently available input values are limited and of insufficient quality, resulting in large errors in noise level calculations. A case study wherein railway rolling noise mitigation measures are evaluated with both CNOSSOS-EU and TWINS show deviations in resulting sound power levels of up to 8 dB(A) and 4 dB(A) for absolute and relative measures respectively. An approach to process TWINS output to extract transfer functions as input values for CNOSSOS-EU is described in this paper. The updated CNOSSOS-EU calculations correspond well with those of TWINS, with the maximum deviation limited to 1.5 dB(A) and 1 dB(A), respectively, for the same absolute and relative measures.

  • Improving strategic noise mapping of railway noise in Europe : Refining CNOSSOS-EU calculations using TWINS
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 839, s. 156216-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC) requires all European Union Member States to produce strategic noise maps using a common assessment methodology: CNOSSOS-EU. The reliability of CNOSSOS-EU railway noise evaluation is dependent on the input vehicle and track transfer functions. The CNOSSOS-EU default database contains the currently available choices for these transfer functions. However, these available transfer functions are limited and of insufficient quality, resulting in large errors in noise level calculations. An approach is presented, introducing an established analytical railway rolling noise calculation technique (TWINS), to extract more reliable and specific transfer functions. A case study consisting of railway rolling noise mitigation measures is defined and used as the basis for extracting and testing these transfer functions. The extracted transfer functions reduce the average deviation between CNOSSOS-EU and reference calculations using TWINS from6.1 dB(A) to 0.8 dB(A) in absolute sound power levels, and from 1.2 db(A) to 0.3 dB(A) in estimates of noise reduction potential for the defined mitigation measures. Application of this approach shows potential to improve the quality and depth of the existing CNOSSOS-EU default database. This may lead to more reliable estimations of railway noise in the strategic noise maps and the subsequent assessment of its harmful effects.
