- The aim is to examine how investigators in the police reproduce the interviewees’ utterances in narratives, direct and indirect reported speech, and by framing the words in reports with or without quotation marks. The focus is on the police’s professional writing and techniques of reproducing interviewees’ words in written texts. Questions are: What techniques do the police use in the written interview reports? How do the techniques convey evidentiality? A corpus on domestic violence is used with a theoretical foundation in critical discourse analysis, polyvocality and evidentiality. A new analytical framework for polyvocal texts is developed in terms of utterance, source and framer to pin down the evidentiality. The result shows that it is difficult to determine whether words placed within the quotation marks are verbatim or not. Another result shows that investigators are not consistent in documenting utterances from different sources, and they do not show whether the utterances are embedded or not and to what degree they are embedded. This makes it sometimes difficult to uncover the structure of the original events and to perceive who the source of the utterances is, which means that evidentiality is not always clear.

- The aim of this article is to examine how police investigators reproduce interviewees' utterances in narratives, in direct and indirect reported speech, and by enclosing words in reports in quotation marks. Drawing on a larger study of professional writing, the pertinent research question for the current investigation is how writing techniques in police interview reports convey evidential value in the form of reported utterances. A corpus of police reports on domestic violence is explored from the theoretical perspectives of critical discourse analysis, polyvocality and reportative evidentiality. A new analytical framework for polyvocal texts is developed in terms of utterance, source and framer. The results show that it is difficult to determine whether or not words placed within quotation marks are meant to present verbatim quotes. Another finding is that police investigators are not consistent in documenting utterances from different sources, or in showing whether utterances are embedded in other utterances. This may obscure the structure of the original events and the source of crucial utterances, resulting in unclear evidential status for police reports.

- The Swedish adverb drygt is often used as an approximator in expressions like drygt 1 meter, where it means ‘a bit more than’ according to dictionaries and most speakers. Here, we show that drygt is undergoing semantic change and being reinterpreted as meaning ‘around’, ‘about’ or even ‘a bit less than’. To study this ongoing semantic reinterpretation, a questionnaire was circulated, reaching some 2700 participants. The participants were asked about their linguistic intuitions about drygt: does drygt 100 kronor best correspond to 97 kronor, 97–102 kronor or 102 kronor? The results show that younger speakers are more likely than older to prefer the reinterpretations. The change has gone farthest in the south of Sweden, where half of the young speakers interpret drygt as ‘around’ or ‘a bit less than’. The comments to the questionnaire show that most participants are unaware that interpretations other than their own exist. The study also reveals that in translations of Swedish novels made available as parallel corpora, drygt is often translated into equivalents of ‘around’ or ‘a bit less than’. Furthermore, the Danish and Norwegian equivalents of drygt – godt og vel and drøyt – are undergoing a semantic change similar to that of drygt. We discuss how these findings relate to semantic change in general and argue that the change we observe is due to ambiguous contexts and possibly to speakers having different underlying cognitive representations.

- I arbetslivet är möten vanliga, och ett centralt mål för mötena är fatta gemensamma beslut för att komma vidare i arbetet. I artikeln utforskas den interaktion som bildar vägen till det första (större) beslutet i ett terminologiprojekt. Projektet är typiskt för många terminologiprojekt genom att det innefattar samarbete mellan ämnesexperter och leds av en professionell terminolog. Artikelns syfte är att belysa hur interaktionen leder fram till att ett beslut fattas i detta möte där olika experter bidrar med sin kunskap. Hur är beslutsfattandet organiserat i interaktionen? Hur förhåller sig deltagarna till varandras expertiser i arbetet? En analys av topiker och epistemiska positioneringar i samtalet visar att topiken som leder fram till beslutet inte behandlas samlat och att samtalet övergår till att behandla beslutsfrågan först när samtliga ämnesexperter explicit har redogjort för sin epistemiska tillgång. Samtalet kännetecknas således av ett gemensamt epistemiskt ansvar, där beslut inte fattas förrän alla har uttryckt samma uppfattning. Det framkommer också att terminologen har en epistemisk särställning i arbetet genom att ta epistemiskt företräde att avgöra när kunskapsläget har inventerats nog och tillräckligt med delad kunskap har etablerats så att beslut kan fattas. Han intar därmed en typ av grindvaktsroll genom att ta ansvar för att beslut är välgrundade.
