  • High-mountain monitoring of persistent organic pollutants at the basic environmental observatory moussala
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Comptes Rendus de l'Academie Bulgare des Sciences / Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. - : Publishing House Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. - 1310-1331 .- 2367-5535. ; 67:8, s. 1129-1136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present the performance of the equipment for passive air sampling installed at Basic Environmental Observatory (BEO) Moussala, together with the first results obtained during the campaigns conducted in the period March 2009 March 2011 within the framework of the network for POP monitoring (MONET EU Project). The advantage of sampling at BEO Moussala is that the observatory is located at a high altitude (Moussala Peak, 2925 m above sea level), away from industrial polluters and large transportation fluxes. This unique location allows one to gather data from a large region subjected to the influence of transboundary Mediterranean and continental air masses. This would further open possibilities for studying the pollutants' levels and their correlation with the local climatic factors, the latter being well known in this region.

  • A kaleidoscope of photosynthetic antenna proteins and their emerging roles
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Plant Physiology. - : Oxford University Press. - 0032-0889 .- 1532-2548. ; 189:3, s. 1204-1219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photosynthetic light-harvesting antennae are pigment-binding proteins that perform one of the most fundamental tasks on Earth, capturing light and transferring energy that enables life in our biosphere. Adaptation to different light environments led to the evolution of an astonishing diversity of light-harvesting systems. At the same time, several strategies have been developed to optimize the light energy input into photosynthetic membranes in response to fluctuating conditions. The basic feature of these prompt responses is the dynamic nature of antenna complexes, whose function readily adapts to the light available. High-resolution microscopy and spectroscopic studies on membrane dynamics demonstrate the crosstalk between antennae and other thylakoid membrane components. With the increased understanding of light-harvesting mechanisms and their regulation, efforts are focusing on the development of sustainable processes for effective conversion of sunlight into functional bio-products. The major challenge in this approach lies in the application of fundamental discoveries in light-harvesting systems for the improvement of plant or algal photosynthesis. Here, we underline some of the latest fundamental discoveries on the molecular mechanisms and regulation of light harvesting that can potentially be exploited for the optimization of photosynthesis.

  • Social-ecological change : insights from the Southern African Program on Ecosystem Change and Society
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ecosystems and People. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2639-5908 .- 2639-5916. ; 18:1, s. 447-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social-ecological systems (SES) research has emerged as an important area of sustainability science, informing and supporting pressing issues of transformation towards more sustainable, just and equitable futures. To date, much SES research has been done in or from the Global North, where the challenges and contexts for supporting sustainability transformations are substantially different from the Global South. This paper synthesises emerging insights on SES dynamics that can inform actions and advance research to support sustainability transformations specifically in the southern African context. The paper draws on work linked to members of the Southern African Program on Ecosystem Change and Society (SAPECS), a leading SES research network in the region, synthesizing key insights with respect to the five core themes of SAPECS: (i) transdisciplinary and engaged research, (ii) ecosystem services and human well-being, (iii) governance institutions and management practices, (iv) spatial relationships and cross-scale connections, and (v) regime shifts, traps and transformations. For each theme, we focus on insights that are particularly novel, interesting or important in the southern African context, and reflect on key research gaps and emerging frontiers for SES research in the region going forward. Such place-based insights are important for understanding the variation in SES dynamics around the world, and are crucial for informing a context-sensitive global agenda to foster sustainability transformations at local to global scales.

  • The Southern African Program on Ecosystem Change and Society : an emergent community of practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ecosystems and People. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2639-5908 .- 2639-5916. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainability-focused research networks and communities of practice have emerged as a key response and strategy to build capacity and knowledge to support transformation towards more sustainable, just and equitable futures. This paper synthesises insights from the development of a community of practice on social-ecological systems (SES) research in southern Africa over the past decade, linked to the international Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS). This community consists of a network of researchers who carry out place-based SES research in the southern African region. They interact through various cross-cutting working groups and also host a variety of public colloquia and student and practitioner training events. Known as the Southern African Program on Ecosystem Change and Society (SAPECS), its core objectives are to: (1) derive new approaches and empirical insights on SES dynamics in the southern African context; (2) have a tangible impact by mainstreaming knowledge into policy and practice; and (3) grow the community of practice engaged in SES research and governance, including researchers, students and practitioners. This paper reflects on experiences in building the SAPECS community, with the aim of supporting the development of similar networks elsewhere in the world, particularly in the Global South.

  • Resilience and development : mobilizing for transformation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Society. - 1708-3087. ; 21:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2014, the Third International Conference on the resilience of social-ecological systems chose the theme resilience and development: mobilizing for transformation. The conference aimed specifically at fostering an encounter between the experiences and thinking focused on the issue of resilience through a social and ecological system perspective, and the experiences focused on the issue of resilience through a development perspective. In this perspectives piece, we reflect on the outcomes of the meeting and document the differences and similarities between the two perspectives as discussed during the conference, and identify bridging questions designed to guide future interactions. After the conference, we read the documents (abstracts, PowerPoints) that were prepared and left in the conference database by the participants (about 600 contributions), and searched the web for associated items, such as videos, blogs, and tweets from the conference participants. All of these documents were assessed through one lens: what do they say about resilience and development? Once the perspectives were established, we examined different themes that were significantly addressed during the conference. Our analysis paves the way for new collective developments on a set of issues: (1) Who declares/assign/cares for the resilience of what, of whom? (2) What are the models of transformations and how do they combine the respective role of agency and structure? (3) What are the combinations of measurement and assessment processes? (4) At what scale should resilience be studied? Social transformations and scientific approaches are coconstructed. For the last decades, development has been conceived as a modernization process supported by scientific rationality and technical expertise. The definition of a new perspective on development goes with a negotiation on a new scientific approach. Resilience is presently at the center of this negotiation on a new science for development.

  • I teatralitetens brännvidd : Om Ingmar Bergmans filmkonst
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to discuss and exemplify the use of theatre and theatricality in the film aesthetics of Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007). The main primary material of the study consists of a selection of Bergman’s films: the nine commercials made for Bris soap (1951-1953) and the feature films Sawdust and Tinsel (1953), Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), The Seventh Seal (1957), The Magician (1958), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1963), The Silence (1963), Persona (1966), The Ritual (1969), Scenes from a Marriage (1973), Fanny and Alexander (1983) and Saraband (2003). The dissertation also includes several other examples from Bergman’s rich intermedial oeuvre, and features theatre, film, radio and television productions. The interart approach is also applied on material from the Ingmar Bergman archives and to the author’s unique interviews that were carried out with Bergman in the fall of 2004 (some of his last interviews). After an introduction in the first chapter, the second chapter discusses the history, aesthetics and terminology of theatricality. The term has accumulated an extraordinary variety of meanings, making it denote everything from an act to excess in the broadest possible sense, from a style to a semiotic system and from a medium to a message. In this dissertation theatricality is seen as a reference to a performance that is directed outwards; an act of showing, which reveals the relationship between the medium and the observer. A prerequisite for this is that the object is manifested with a parallel consciousness of the observer’s gaze, which is used as a part of the staging, thereby involving the observer in the work while making her realize that the author is aware of her gaze. This self-consciousness is illustrated in the three following analytical chapters. The third chapter looks at the depiction and use of space, framing and long shot-composition, reveries, character entrances, movement and tracking shots in Bergman’s films. The main foci of the fourth chapter are masks and Bergman’s famous close-ups, where the emphasis lies on the importance of the actor. In scenes where Bergman lets the actor face and speak directly into the camera, theatricality is characterized by oscillation; that is, it forms an act of showing that breaks the cinematic illusion, while simultaneously involving the observer in the film. The chapter also examines the use of photographs in Bergman’s films. The fifth chapter focuses on some of the meta-aspects created by Bergman’s theatrical film aesthetics, for instance when the characters in the films visit theatres. The chapter also analyzes the play-within-the play structure of Bergman’s works and the "indirect" address from Bergman in his films, which is accomplished through the intervention of his voice and cameo appearances. The sixth and last chapter of this dissertation consists of a brief summary and conclusions on the subject of cinematic style that show how ideas concerning theatricality have been a part of Ingmar Bergman’s film art.

  • Ingår i: Kulturella perspektiv - Svensk etnologisk tidskrift. - Umeå : föreningen Kulturella Perspektiv vid Umeå universitet. - 1102-7908. ; 19:4, s. 2-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ingmar Bergman’s name is virtually synonymous with intellectual European films and high culture but lately scholars have been trying to show that Bergman worked in a variety of fields, including popular culture, and that his work often was commercial, popular and more easily accessible than his auteur image would suggest. This article explores some of the soap commercials that Bergman made in the early 1950s, which still remain a little known part of his oeuvre. The focus also lies on the publication of Bergman’s scripts as serial “filmnovels” in the weekly women’s magazine Allers Familjejournal (1959–1967) and on the transformation of the image of Bergman by his popular later works Scenes from a Marriage (1973) and Fanny and Alexander (1982) and through famous images that reappear throughout the spectrum of popular culture, most notably the image of Death from The Seventh Seal (1957).
