    • The recent diffusion of new formats of archaeological publication systems results from ad hoc solutions conceived and realized for serving specific communication needs. These new formats are customized for facilitating the fruition of specific archaeological information and can be tailored and structured for hosting datasets and results. Unlike standard publications, they do not represent the final result of the investigation but rather a dynamic public space in which different interpretations can be revised and formulated. A review of the available online publication systems for Culture Heritage, with a focus on the publication systems the author worked with, can help define their potential advantages and flaws and steer the design and development of further advancements.

  • Documentation and Interpretation of an Archeological Excavation: an experience with Dense Stereo Reconstruction tools

    • An archeological excavation is usually a rapidly evolving environment: several factors (weather, costs, permissions) force the work to be concentrated in a few weeks. Moreover, excavating is essentially a mono-directional operation, which constantly modifies the state of the site. Since most of the interpretation is performed in a second stage, it is necessary to collect a massive amount of documentation (images, sketches, notes, measurements). In this paper we present an experiment of monitoring of an excavation in Uppåkra, South Sweden, using dense stereo matching techniques. The archeologists were trained to collect a set of images every day; the set was used to produce a 3D model depicting the state of the excavation. In this way, it was possible to obtain a reliable geometric representation of the evolution of the excavation. The obtained model were also used by the archeologists, by the means of an open-source tool, to perform a site study and interpretation stage directly on the geometric data. The results of the experimentation show that dense stereo matching can be easily integrated with the daily work of archeologists in the context of an excavation, and it can provide a valuable source of data for interpretation, archival and integration of acquired material.

  • The Dynamic Collections : a 3D Web Platform of Archaeological Artefacts designed for Data Reuse and Deep Interaction

    • The Dynamic Collections project is an ongoing initiative pursued by the Visual Computing Lab ISTI-CNR in Italy and the Lund University Digital Archaeology Laboratory-DARKLab, Sweden. The aim of this project is to explore the possibilities offered by a deep, structured interaction with a large set of digital replicas of archeological artefacts. The project developed and deployed a web-based platform containing a large number of digital artefacts, and a set of dedicated tools to interact with them at a both artefact- and collection-level. This platform has been used in university courses and research activities with positive feedback from the community. In this contribution, we want to describe various aspects of the management of the project, its evolution, and discuss the roadmap of future developments and research directions.

  • Archeological excavation monitoring using dense stereo matching techniques

    • Several new tools to obtain three-dimensional information from unorganized image sets are now available for the public use. The main advantage of this software, which is based on dense stereo matching, is the possibility to generate 3D content without the need of high-cost hardware (e.g. 3D scanning devices). Nevertheless, their use in real-world application domains (like cultural heritage) is still not very diffused, due to the non-straightforward usability of the raw data produced. In this paper, we investigate the use of automatic dense stereo reconstruction tools for the monitoring of an excavation site. A methodology for the effective acquisition and processing of data is presented. In addition, the results of the data assessment demonstrate the repeatability of the data acquisition process, which is a key factor when qualitative analysis is performed. The use of three-dimensional data is integrated in an open source mesh processing tool, thus showing that a spatio-temporal analysis can be performed in a very intuitive way using off-the-shelf or free/open digital tools. Moreover, the use of peculiar rendering and the creation of snapshots from arbitrary points of view increase the amount of documentation data, and suggest a perfect integration of data produced with dense stereo matching in the future standard documentation for excavation monitoring.

  • Digital reconstruction and visualization in archaeology Case-study drawn from the work of the Swedish Pompeii Project

    • The Swedish Pompeii Project started in 2000 as a research and fieldwork activity initiated by the Swedish Institute in Rome. The aim was to record and analyze an entire Pompeian city-block, Insula V 1. Since autumn 2011 a new branch of advanced digital archaeology, involving 3D reconstructions and documentation methods, was added to the project agenda. The insula was completely digitized using laser scanner technology and the raw data were employed to develop different research activities in the area of digital visualization. This paper presents the recent results of the 3D interpretation of the house of Caecilius Iucundus. This research activity was developed employing a large variety of historical and archaeological sources such as: archaeological reports, historical image documentation (printed as well as in edited material) and analysis of the in situ structures. This work was characterized by the experimentation of a new workflow of data development, where the elaboration of the interpreted structures took place directly in virtual space, using the scanned model as geometrical reference. This method easily connected all the historical and archaeological sources collected for the interpretation, opening a new discussion about different possible interpretation of the house. Moreover, a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) was used in different occasions as platform where the different hypotheses could be discussed in the context given by the actual state of the archaeological structures. The use of an accurate and resolute replica of the site as a backdrop for the virtual reconstruction allowed a high level of control on the proposed hypotheses during the interpretation process. This study enabled the acquisition of new and important information about the house, thus, bringing a significant contribution to the archaeological analysis of Insula V 1, suggested as pilot project for wider use.

    • In recent times, archaeological documentation strategies have been considerably improved by the use of advanced 3D acquisition systems. Laser scanning, photogrammetry and computer vision techniques provide archaeologists with new opportunities to investigate and document the archaeological record. In spite of this, the amount of data collected and the geometrical complexity of the models resulting from such acquisition processes, have always prevented their systematic integration into a GIS environment. Recent technological advances occurred in the visualization of 3D contents, led us to overcome the aforementioned limitations and set up a work pipeline in which was possible to put the 3D models not only in the context of data visualization but also in the frame of spatial analysis. The case study described is a part of the Swedish Pompeii Project, a research and fieldwork activity started in 2000 with the purpose of recording and investigating an entire Pompeian city block, Insula V 1. As an additional part of the research, a laser scanning acquisition campaign was conducted in the last few years. The resulting models were thus meant to be used to develop further research lines: among these, a 3D-GIS system was expected to be set up with the purpose to i) collect in the same geo-referenced environment, different typologies of documentation gathered in the context of the Swedish Pompeii Project; ii) inter-connect 3D-models with the project website; iii) use the third-dimension as a further analytical field of investigation, in the form of spatial analysis and cognitive simulation.

    • The Swedish Pompeii Project started in 2000 as a fieldwork initiated from the Swedish Institute in Rome. The aim was to record and analyze a full Pompeian city-block, Insula V 1. This paper presents the initial results of one of the actions in the context of this project. In October 2011, two houses were acquired using 3D scanning and 3d-from-photos techniques, and the data was processed to obtain an accurate and complete model. Through the use of Virtual Reality Techniques, it will be possible to visit the Pompeian houses of Casa del Torello and Casa di Cecilio Giocondo understanding the relation between the actual archaeological context and their original outfit. The collected data will be used also to design and test a web-based access system, where the entire dataset will be available for browsing, measurement and data extraction. The features of HTML5, in particular WebGL, will be used to deliver realtime 3D content and interaction.

    • 3D recording and visualization is standard practice at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at LU. This approach is currently used within several field projects to support documentation, data management and data analysis. The 3D data collected in the field are archived in the faculty server and are made available to researchers and students through the Lund University Digital Archaeology Laboratory DARKLab website (www.darklab.lu.se).The Interactive Reporting System for the Kämpinge Project was recently published online as a part of Paola Derudas' PhD project "Documenting, Interpreting, Publishing, Re-using". The main goal of this project is investigating new forms of archaeological reports. The system includes data collected across four years of investigation, and it has been customized to support field investigation in Sweden. The Interactive Reporting System created for the Kämpinge Project will serve as a model for publishing several ongoing field investigations projects, currently under development at the Lund University Digital Archaeology Lab -DARKLab.
