  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrology as Art : Representation and Practice - Representation and Practice. - 9781907767104 ; 10, s. 9-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The designation of astrology as an art raises some simple but fundamentally im-portant historical questions. How old is this designation, and, given that earlier generations of astrologers wrote in different languages, what words did they use that we translate as ‘art’? What are the connotations of those different words in their historical contexts? What other designations than ‘art’ would have been possible, and were such alternative labels used as well? Was astrology ever practised in cultural contexts where distinctions like that between ‘art’ and ‘science’ were not made? And if calling astrology an ‘art’ was not originally a question of aesthetics, was there still an aesthetic dimension to the practice of astrology, and how might we define or understand that dimension?

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper examines the reception of and revisions made to the teachings of the Italian astrologer-monk Placido de Titi (1603 – 1668) in Protestant England following the decline of astrology during the 18th century, particularly as found in the writings of John Worsdale (1766 – c. 1826), whose role in the emergence of modern astrology is to a certain extent reappraised, and of his contemporary critic Thomas Oxley (1789 – 1851).

  • Reshaping karma: an Indic metaphysical paradigm in traditional and modern astrology
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Cosmologies: Proceedings of the seventh annual conference of the Sophia Centre for the Study of Cosmology in Culture, University of Wales, Trinity Saint David, 6–7 June 2009. - 9781907767005 ; , s. 52-68
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper examines the metaphysical ideas employed to embed Hellenistic astrology in an Indian religious and cultural context, relating them to questions of causality, determinism and moral freedom. These ideas are contrasted against the largely Thesophical adaptation of the same concepts, which in the 19th and 20th centuries formed the emerging modern astrology in Europe, and which led it to abandon the traditional prognostic model in favour of an esoteric-symbolic one, in a radical reversal of the compromise between astrology and theology dominating the Christian Middle Ages and Renaissance.
