  • HEP Applications Evaluation of the EDG Testbed and Middleware
  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Workpackage 8 of the European Datagrid project was formed in January 2001 with representatives from the four LHC experiments, and with experiment independent people from five of the six main EDG partners. In September 2002 WP8 was strengthened by the addition of effort from BaBar and D0. The original mandate of WP8 was, following the definition of short- and long-term requirements, to port experiment software to the EDG middleware and testbed environment. A major additional activity has been testing the basic functionality and performance of this environment. This paper reviews experiences and evaluations in the areas of job submission, data management, mass storage handling, information systems and monitoring. It also comments on the problems of remote debugging, the portability of code, and scaling problems with increasing numbers of jobs, sites and nodes. Reference is made to the pioneeering work of Atlas and CMS in integrating the use of the EDG Testbed into their data challenges. A forward look is made to essential software developments within EDG and to the necessary cooperation between EDG and LCG for the LCG prototype due in mid 2003.

  • HEP Applications and Their Experience with the Use of DataGrid Middleware
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9184 .- 1570-7873. ; 2:4, s. 369-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An overview is presented of the characteristics of HEP computing and its mapping to the Grid paradigm. This is followed by a synopsis of the main experiences and lessons learned by HEP experiments in their use of DataGrid middleware using both the EDG application testbed and the LCG production service. Particular reference is made to experiment lsquodata challengesrsquo, and a forward look is given to necessary developments in the framework of the EGEE project

  • Development effort estimation in free/open source software from activity in version control systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Empirical Software Engineering. - : Springer Nature Switzerland AG. - 1382-3256 .- 1573-7616. ; 27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effort estimation models are a fundamental tool in software management, and used as a fore-cast for resources, constraints and costs associated to software development. For Free/OpenSource Software (FOSS) projects, effort estimation is especially complex: professionaldevelopers work alongside occasional, volunteer developers, so the overall effort (in person-months) becomes non-trivial to determine. The objective of this work it to develop a simpleeffort estimation model for FOSS projects, based on the historic data of developers’ effort. The model is fed with direct developer feedback to ensure its accuracy. After extractingthe personal development profiles of several thousands of developers from 6 large FOSSprojects, we asked them to fill in a questionnaire to determine if they should be consideredas full-time developers in the project that they work in. Their feedback was used to fine-tune the value of an effort threshold, above which developers can be considered as full-time.With the help of the over 1,000 questionnaires received, we were able to determine, for every project in our sample, the threshold of commits that separates full-time from non-full-time developers. We finally offer guidelines and a tool to apply our model to FOSS projects that use a version control system.
