    • Traditional HPC scientific workloads are tightly coupled, while emerging scientific workflows exhibit even more complex patterns, consisting of multiple characteristically different stages that may be IO-intensive, compute-intensive, or memory-intensive. New high-performance computer systems are evolving to adapt to these new requirements and are motivated by the need for performance and efficiency in resource usage. On the other hand, cloud workloads are loosely coupled, and their systems have matured technologies under different constraints from HPC.In this thesis, the use of cloud technologies designed for loosely coupled dynamic and elastic workloads is explored, repurposed, and examined in the landscape of HPC in three major parts. The first part deals with the deployment of HPC workloads in cloud-native environments through the use of containers and analyses the feasibility and trade-offs of elastic scaling. The second part relates to the use of workflow management systems in HPC workflows; in particular, a molecular docking workflow executed through Airflow is discussed. Finally, object storage systems, a cost-effective and scalable solution widely used in the cloud, and their usage in HPC applications through MPI I/O are discussed in the third part of this thesis.

    • Dynamic service composition represents a key feature for service-based applications operating in dynamic and large scale network environments, as it allows leveraging the variety of offered services, and to cope with their volatility. However, the high number of services and the lack of central control pose a significant challenge for the scalability and effectiveness of the composition process. We address this problem by proposing a fully decentralized approach to servicecomposition, based on the use of a gossip protocol to support information dissemination and decision making. The proposed system builds and maintains acomposition of services that fulfills both functional and non functional requirements. For the latter, we focus in particular on requirements concerning the composite service completion time, taking into account both the response time and the impact of network latency. Simulation experiments show that our solution converges quickly to a feasible composition and can self-adapt to dynamic changes concerning both service availability and network latency.

    • Traditional networks are transformed to enable full integrationof heterogeneous hardware and software functions, that are configuredat runtime, with minimal time to market, and are provided to theirend users on “as a service” principle. Therefore, a countless number ofpossibilities for further innovation and exploitation opens up. NetworkFunction Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN)are two key enablers for such a new flexible, scalable, and service-orientednetwork architecture. This chapter provides an overview of QoS-awarestrategies that can be used over the levels of the network abstractionaiming to fully exploit the new network opportunities. Specifically, wepresent three use cases of integrating SDN and NFV with QoS-awareservice composition, ranging from the energy efficient placement of virtualnetwork functions inside modern data centers, to the deployment ofdata stream processing applications using SDN to control the networkpaths, to exploiting SDN for context-aware service compositions.

  • MOSES : A platform for experimenting with qos-driven self-adaptation policies for service oriented systems

    • Architecting software systems according to the service-oriented paradigm, and designing runtime self-adaptable systems are two relevant research areas in today’s software engineering. In this chapter we present MOSES, a software platform supporting QoS-driven adaptation of service-oriented systems. It has been conceived for service-oriented systems architected as composite services that receive requests generated by different classes of users. MOSES integrates within a unified framework different adaptation mechanisms. In this way it achieves a greater flexibility in facing various operating environments and the possibly conflicting QoS requirements of several concurrent users. Besides providing its own self-adaptation functionalities, MOSES lends itself to the experimentation of alternative approaches to QoS-driven adaptation of service-oriented systems thanks to its modular architecture. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

    • Abstract The ICT industry and specifically critical sectors, such as healthcare, transportation, energy and government, require as mandatory the compliance of ICT systems and services with legislation and regulation, as well as with standards. In the era of cloud computing, this compliance management issue is exacerbated by the distributed nature of the system and by the limited control that customers have on the services. Today, the cloud industry is aware of this problem (as evidenced by the compliance program of many cloud service providers), and the research community is addressing the many facets of the legal-rule compliance checking and quality assurance problem. Cloud service brokerage plays an important role in legislation compliance and QoS management of cloud services. In this paper we discuss our experience in designing a legal-rule and QoS-aware cloud service broker, and we explore relate research issues. Specifically we provide three main contributions to the literature: first, we describe the detailed design architecture of the legal-rule and QoS-aware broker. Second, we discuss our design choices which rely on the state of the art solutions available in literature. We cover four main research areas: cloud broker service deployment, seamless cloud service migration, cloud service monitoring, and legal rule compliance checking. Finally, from the literature review in these research areas, we identify and discuss research challenges.

  • Resource allocation for Mobile Edge Clouds

    • Recent advances in Internet technologies have led to the proliferation of new distributed applications in the transportation, healthcare, mining, security, and entertainment sectors. The emerging applications have characteristics such as being bandwidth-hungry, latency-critical, and applications with a user population contained within a limited geographical area, and require high availability, low jitter, and security.One way of addressing the challenges arising because of these emerging applications, is to move the computing capabilities closer to the end-users, at the logical edge of a network, in order to improve the performance, operating cost, and reliability of applications and services. These distributed new resources and software stacks, situated on the path between today's centralized data centers and devices in close proximity to the last mile network, are known as Mobile Edge Clouds (MECs). The distributed MECs provides new opportunities for the management of compute resources and the allocation of applications to those resources in order to minimize the overall cost of application deployment while satisfying end-user demands in terms of application performance.However, these opportunities also present three significant challenges. The first challenge is where and how much computing resources to deploy along the path between today's centralized data centers and devices for cost-optimal operations. The second challenge is where and how much resources should be allocated to which applications to meet the applications' performance requirements while minimizing operational costs. The third challenge is how to provide a framework for application deployment on resource-constrained IoT devices in heterogeneous environments. This thesis addresses the above challenges by proposing several models, algorithms, and simulation and software frameworks. In the first part, we investigate methods for early detection of short-lived and significant increase in demand for computing resources (also called spikes) which may cause significant degradation in the performance of a distributed application. We make use of adaptive signal processing techniques for early detection of spikes. We then consider trade-offs between parameters such as the time taken to detect a spike and the number of false spikes that are detected. In the second part, we study the resource planning problem where we study the cost benefits of adding new compute resources based on performance requirements for emerging applications. In the third part, we study the problem of allocating resources to applications by formulating as an optimization problem, where the objective is to minimize overall operational cost while meeting the performance targets of applications. We also propose a hierarchical scheduling framework and policies for allocating resources to applications based on performance metrics of both applications and compute resources. In the last part, we propose a framework, Calvin Constrained, for resource-constrained devices, which is an extension of the Calvin framework and supports a limited but essential subset of the features of the reference framework taking into account the limited memory and processing power of the resource-constrained IoT devices.

    • Containers are increasingly adopted, because they simplify the deployment and management of applications. Moreover, the ever increasing presence of IoT devices and Fog computing resources calls for the development of new approaches for decentralizing the application execution, so to improve the application performance. Although several solutions for orchestrating containers exist, the most of them does not efficiently exploit the characteristics of the emerging computing environment. In this paper, we propose Adaptive Container Deployment (ACD), a general model of the deployment and adaptation of containerized applications, expressed as an Integer Linear Programming problem. Besides acquiring and releasing geo-distributed computing resources, ACD can optimize multiple run-time deployment goals, by exploiting horizontal and vertical elasticity of containers. We show the flexibility of the ACD model and, using it as benchmark, we evaluate the behavior of several greedy heuristics for determining the container deployment. © 2018 IEEE.

    • Mission-critical applications such as industrial control processes are evolving towards a new development paradigm by offloading their heavy computations to the edge of the emerging Fifth Generation Wireless Specifications (5G) network. In this manner, the applications can gain the economical and efficiency benefits of cloud computing, as well as reliable communication from the 5G network. However, the limited access to a configurable infrastructure of the 5G network and its edge computing infrastructure has restrained academic researchers from experimenting and validating their mission-critical application design under reasonable communication and computation scenarios. In this paper, we present a configurable mid-band 5G Stand-Alone (SA) deployment and demonstrate a control process that is running over the edge of the 5G network. We show in this paper a complete system setup for Control over the Edge (CoE) of the 5G network, and validate the feasibility of deploying similar mission-critical applications over the edge of 5G network.

  • Performance Implications of Virtualization

    • Virtualization is a component of cloud computing. Virtualization transforms traditional inflexible, complex infrastructure of individual servers, storage, and network hardware into a flexible virtual resource pool and increases IT agility, flexibility, and scalability while creating significant cost savings. Additional benefits of virtualization include, greater work mobility, increased performance and availability of resources, and automated operations. Many virtualization solutions have been implemented. There are plenty of cloud providers using different virtualization solutions to provide virtual machines (VMs) and containers, respectively. Various virtualization solutions have different performance overheads due to their various implementations of virtualization and supported features. A cloud user should understand performance overheads of different virtualization solutions and the impact on the performance caused by different virtualization features, so that it can choose appropriate virtualization solution, for the services to avoid degrading their quality of services (QoSs). In this research, we investigate the impacts of different virtualization technologies such as, container-based, and hypervisor-based virtualization as well as various virtualization features such as, over-allocation of resources, live migration, scalability, and distributed resource scheduling on the performance of various applications for instance, Cassandra NoSQL database, and a large telecommunication application. According to our results, hypervisor-based virtualization has many advantages and is more mature compare to the recently introduced container-based virtualization. However, impacts of the hypervisorbased virtualization on the performance of the applications is much higher than the container-based virtualization as well as the non-virtualized solution. The findings of this research should be of benefit to the ones who provide planning, designing, and implementing of the IT infrastructure.
