  • Understanding Participation Experiences in Sport Programs for the Acculturation of Refugee Youth : A Comparative Study of Two Different Programs in the US and Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1556-2948 .- 1556-2956. ; 22:2, s. 449-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sports can help refugees mitigate traumas, connect with others, and learn positive values. In this illustrative comparative study, we compare two sport programs for the acculturation of refugees in the US and Sweden. Our aim is to describe both programs, compare them with the literature, and present suggestions for the field. Hence, we placed the program participants at the center of their acculturation process and used interpretivism to understand their experiences of joining the program and engaging with the sport culture in their countries of resettlement, as well as to account for the benefits they perceived from participation.

  • A comparative study of sports programs for the acculturation of refugee youth
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This ongoing study uses an illustrative comparative design to investigate the experiences of refugee youth in two different sports programs (one in the US and one in Sweden) designed to aid in their acculturation. Both the Swedish and US data collection followed an interpretative paradigm and used a phenomenological methodology to understand the participants’ experiences in the sports programs. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight former program participants in the US and with seventeen youth from refugee backgrounds participating in Swedish sports clubs. The theoretical approach employed in the study followed the concepts of the new social studies of childhood. This means after listening to the young refugees’ personal experiences, we considered them in relation to the design of the programs. The preliminary results show that refugees in both programs expressed positive outcomes that are consistent with those found in previous research: feeling happy, supports-related physical health and mental wellbeing, socializing with peers, and learning the language in a new country. Regardless of the program, the youth perceived similar benefits, even though the refugees in Sweden participated in mainstream sports clubs that were not specifically tailored to acculturation outcomes and also lacked appropriate staff and resources. However, the comparison indicates that sports are not automatically a universal language and can be problematic for acculturation. Both the Swedish and US data show cultural barriers were linked to sports practice in the new country.

  • A comprehensive book in exercise psychology for undergraduate students
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Idrottsforum.org/Nordic sport science forum. - 1652-7224.
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A comprehensive book in exercise psychology for undergraduate students Exercise is an important topic in contemporary society, and since the turn of the century there have been recurring alarming reports about decreasing levels of physical activity and increasing sedentary behavior leading to overweight and obese children and adults. This has contributed to an increased focus on promoting exercise and movement, and the fifth edition of The Psychology of Exercise: Integrating Theory and Practice is a contribution to this field. The book is comprehensive in its content and covers many of the main topics in exercise psychology. The Psychology of Exercise is written primarily for undergraduate students, and this is characterized in its composition. Every chapter, for example, is followed by “What do you know?” questions and learning activities. The book is divided into two main sections, the first being “Understanding and modifying exercise behavior” which deals with definitions of key concepts, physical activity epidemiology, theories for understanding exercise behavior, and developing exercise interventions. The second part of the book is “Psychosocial influences and consequences of exercise” which explores contemporary subjects related to exercise such as personality, self-perception, stress, anxiety, depression, emotional well-being, cognitive function, and health-related quality of life. Overall, The Psychology of Exercise integrates theory and practice across a broad spectrum of topics associated with exercise behavior. The highlight of this book for undergraduates is the material about developing exercise interventions which presents significant and useful theories, models, and practical examples for the design, implementation, and evaluation of these interventions in different settings. Furthermore, the first section of the book about understanding and modifying exercise behavior is well suited to undergraduate students; the text is clearly written in appropriate language. In particular, the key concepts are easily accessible, and the theories are clarified with relevant practical examples. The second section about the psychological and social aspects of exercise does not have the same strengths as the first for an undergraduate audience. The structure and lucidity of the language is not adapted to undergraduate students in the same way as earlier material; the content is more technical, and the concepts are not explained as clearly. Furthermore, more illustrative examples could have been integrated into the text.A further reflection is that the research presented in The Psychology of Exercise unilaterally concerns individual activities (e.g. running, cycling, walking, and weight lifting). There seems to be a lack of research regarding, for example, team or racket sports which may have implications for the book’s conclusions. One such conclusion is that “if you can carry on a conversation while exercising, the intensity is not too high. Such types of exercise will likely result in positive (or at least not negative) experiences during and following the exercise, thus increasing the likelihood that the exercise will be performed again.” However, could the opposite be true for team and racket sports? The principles behind those kinds of exercise may be that they become boring and meaningless without high intensity. A further contribution to the field could therefore be research into the different values of different activities that puts exercise in its social and cultural context to extend our understanding of why people exercise (or not). The target audience for The Psychology of Exercise is anyone who wants to achieve an overall picture of the field. For anyone wishing to immerse themselves in specific exercise behavior topics, it would be better to consult primary research sources or narrower and more specified texts. For example, the theories presented under “Understanding and modifying exercise behavior” are traditional perspectives that have been presented in many works over the years. This book is a very good introduction to these theories, but for both broader and deeper knowledge and understanding, it would be appropriate to consult other sources. As a result, this book can be recommended for undergraduate students and as a teaching aid in exercise behavior courses, and it would be useful across programs with different perspectives, for example health promotion, sports management, coaching, public health, or physical education. The Psychology of Exercise would also be a valuable resource for practitioners aiming to get people physically active and promote health in public, corporate, and school settings, and the content would be useful at micro and macro levels. Furthermore, the topics covered are current and the text would therefore be interesting to the broader population and individuals with a general interest in exercise and physical activity. The Psychology of Exercise: Integrating Theory and Practice is a pertinent contribution to the field of exercise behavior, interventions, and consequences. In particular, the pedagogical structure and clarity makes the book an appropriate teaching aid on undergraduate courses in exercise behavior.

  • A sport for all programme in school : girls’ experience.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; 22:3, s. 416-431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines a Swedish Sport for All Programme (SAP) in school. We use a case study to discuss girls’ debut in alternative sports programme organized in collaboration between school and the sports movement. The empirical data are derived from repeated focus group interviews with one group of seven 10-year-old girls participating in one SAP. The analyses focus on their subjective experiences and how broader gender structures influence these experiences. Drawing on the results of this study, we argue that certain sports can be interpreted as oppressive activities that produce asymmetric power relationships between different groups of children. Simultaneously, the girls see the idea of sports as joyful activities, without male abuse and oppression or hierarchical gender relationships. Based on the girls’ accounts, we claim that both the leaders and the children actively reproduce gender stereotypes in the SAP.

  • ”Det är halvidrott, kanske lite mer än halvidrott” : Idrottsskolan som en praktik för formandet av idrottsbarndomar
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the dissertation was to investigate children’s views on and experiences of The Sport for All programme in school (SAP) (idrottsskolor) and the significance of the activities for children’s ”sports childhood”.The study is anchored in the so-called “new sociology of childhood”. Such a standpoint is based on that children are competent social actors with agency. Following that, childhood is constructed both by actors in specific fields and by the children in these social practices. The dissertation is based on three interview studies from three different SAPs. In study I fifteen individual interviews were conducted with: the programme manager, three school teachers, two sport club leaders and nine children (aged 9-10). Study II was based on repeated focus group interviews with 15 ten-year-old Swedish children participating in a SAP. In study III individual interviews were conducted with eight children, four years after they completed their participation in a SAP. In all three studies the children described the SAP as a different sport practice in relation to traditional organized sport. In the SAP sport was offered in a new context with other meanings and functions compared to conventionally organized sport. But, study II showed that children with a strong performance ethos had the capacity to influence and control the practice in the SAP, which contribute to a “competitive atmosphere” in the SAP activities. Further, study III showed that children with a weak interest in sport enjoyed the activities. However, it was not something this certain group of children wanted to continue to practice outside the program. While other participants with an already established interest in sports, experienced a deepening and widening of their sport interest through the SAP.In terms of agency, the children’s individual and collective views of sport are important to consider in regard to understanding the SAP practice. The children brought prior knowledge, understanding and skills into the SAP, which can contribute to the experience of the practice.

  • Gender regime in a Sport for All programme in school
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionThe aim of the study was to investigate children’s experiences of The Sport for All programme in school (SAP) (idrottsskolan). The specific purpose with this paper was to investigate if boys and girls have equality accessibility to participate in the SAP. The purpose of the SAP is to give children an opportunity to try different sports, with a focus on play and motor learning rather than organized competition.MethodsThis article is based on repeated focus group interviews with one group of 7 ten-year-old girls participating in a SAP in the western part of Sweden. The girls had no, or limited experience, of practice organized sport on their leisure time. The girl’s lived in a low socioeconomic district with a high proportion of immigrants. In the district there is few sports clubs.ResultsThe result shows how the boys have the power to dominate the practice and influence the girls’ experiences of the SAP. And sometimes the boys take over and control the practice in so considerable proportions that the girls find it difficult to participate in the SAP. The study shows that the boys have a better opportunity to use their agency (Alanen, 2014), partly in cooperation with the leaders, and be a part of and influence the sport activities in the SAP. ConclusionsThe girls in the study felt that they were disparaged and excluded cause of the boys’ behaviour. Hence, it is absolutely necessarily that organizer of the SAP pay attention to gender issues and work out guidelines and strategies so that both girls and boys feel included in the SAP:s all activities. As has been discussed before (Flintoff, 2008), and according the results in this study, it requires more than to just start up sport activities and hope that more alternatives will boost more and new participants.

  • 2016
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • In this article we explore children’s experiences of a Sport for All Programme (SAP) in school. The purpose of the ‘Sport for All’ policy is to give children an opportunity to try different sports, with a focus on play and motor learning rather than organized competition. In this study, we approach children as active agents in constructing the SAP practice in line with the theoretical standpoint that children are competent social actors with agency. The study is based on repeated focus group interviews with 15 ten-year-old children (9 girls, 6 boys) participating in a SAP in the western part of Sweden. The children perceived the SAP as sessions with less emphasis on performance and without organized competitions; it was described as a ‘low threshold’ activity. However, the result showed that the SAP activity was not free from performance-oriented principles. The Sport for All pedagogy needs to consider and handle the consequences of competition principles, especially if the participating children and leaders have a performance ethos.
