  • Stärkta skolbibliotek kräver stora satsningar på att utbilda bibliotekarier
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract

  • Solvent Effects on Nitrogen Chemical Shifts
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy. - : Elsevier. - 0066-4103. - 9780128021231 ; 86, s. 73-210
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to significant developments in cryogenic probe technology and the easy access to inverse detection pulse programmes (HSQC, HMBC), the sensitivity of nitrogen NMR has lately vastly improved. As a consequence, nitrogen NMR has turned into a useful and commonly available tool for solution studies of molecular structure and properties for small organic compounds likewise biopolymers. The high sensitivity of the nitrogen lone pair to changes in the molecular environment, alterations in intra- and intermolecular interactions, and in molecular conformation along with its wide, up to 1200 ppm chemical shift dispersion make nitrogen NMR to an exceptionally sensitive reporter tool. The nitrogen chemical shift has been applied in various fields of chemistry, including for instance the studies of transition metal complexes, chemical reactions such as N-alkylation and N-oxidation, tautomerization, protonation–deprotonation equilibria, hydrogen and halogen bonding, and elucidation of molecular conformation and configuration. The 15N NMR data observed in the investigation of these molecular properties and processes is influenced by the medium it is acquired in. This influence may be due to direct coordination of solvent molecules to transition metal complexes, alteration of tautomerization equilibria, and solvent polarity induced electron density changes of conjugated systems, for example. Thus, the solvent may significantly alter the observed nitrogen NMR shifts. This review aims to provide an overview of solvent effects of practical importance, and discusses selected experimental reports from various subfields of chemistry.

  • Cluster analysis of S100 gene expression and genes correlating to psoriasin (S100A7) expression at different stages of breast cancer development
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Int J Oncol. ; 27:6, s. 1473-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gene expression patterns in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and invasive and metastatic breast tumors have been determined using serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE). The purpose of this approach was to identify biologically and clinically meaningful subgroups of DCIS with a high risk of progression to invasive disease. The analyses have led to the identification of several differentially expressed genes, such as HIN-1, dermcidin and S100A7 (psoriasin). The aim of the present study was further to delineate the expression profile of S100 genes using information from 22 breast epithelial SAGE libraries. We demonstrated the down-regulation of S100A6 and S100A10 in breast cancer, irrespective of pathological stage. S100P and S100Z were both up-regulated in cancer; whereas S100A7, S100A8 and S100A9 were strongly up-regulated only in DCIS. The hierarchical clustering of S100 gene expression in these 22 libraries revealed two major groups with distinguishable S100 gene expression profiles. One of them was characterized by the high concomitant expression of S100A7, S100A8 and S100A9. Using SAGE informatics, we found 21 genes with a high positive correlation to S100A7 expression in libraries representing different categories of tissues archived at SAGE Genie, suggesting a function of psoriasin that is not tissue specific. Like S100A7, several of these genes displayed cation-binding properties. We also report the strong correlation in the breast epithelial SAGE libraries between the expression of S100A7 and genes reported as being up-regulated in DCIS, as well as in the inflammatory skin disorder, psoriasis; including RGS5, UPK1A, TMPRSS3, S100A9, p53, SCCA1, SCCA2 and KRT17.

  • Psoriasin (S100A7) and calgranulin-B (S100A9) induction is dependent on reactive oxygen species and is downregulated by Bcl-2 and antioxidants
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Cancer Biol Ther. ; 4:9, s. 998-1005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • S-100 proteins are calcium-binding proteins with important growth regulatory functions. Of these proteins, psoriasin and calgranulin-B have been shown to be highly upregulated in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast and in psoriasis. The purpose of this study was to further elucidate the functional relevance of the overexpression of these two S-100 proteins in psoriasis and DCIS. We report the induction of both proteins by reactive oxygen species, phorbol ester TPA, and the induction of psoriasin in response to the PI3K inhibitor wortmannin. We also demonstrate that Bcl-2 overexpression represses the induction of psoriasin and calgranulin-B under these different conditions. The same effect was obtained with the antioxidant NAC, which indicates that the suppression of psoriasin and calgranulin-B induction is mediated by the antioxidant function of Bcl-2. Furthermore, we demonstrate that overexpression of a dominant negative IKKbeta also inhibits the induction of psoriasin suggesting that the NFkappaB pathway is involved in the induction of this protein. Also, we found NFkappaB responsive DNA elements in the upstream promoter region of psoriasin. MCF10A cells with a stable retroviral overexpression of psoriasin were significantly more resistant to H2O2-induced cell death than control cells further supporting the hypothesis that these S-100 proteins may play a role in oxidative stress response.

  • Revisiting the notion of the public library as a meeting place : challenges to the mission of promoting democracy in times of political turmoil
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0022-0418 .- 1758-7379. ; 79:7, s. 178-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThis article explores how public librarians understand and perform the democratic mission of public libraries in times of political and social turbulence and critically discusses the idea of public libraries as meeting places.Design/methodology/approachFive group interviews conducted with public librarians in southern Sweden are analyzed using a typology of four perspectives on democracy.FindingsTwo perspectives on democracy are commonly represented: social-liberal democracy, focusing on libraries as promoters of equality and deliberative democracy, focusing on the library as a place for rational deliberation. Two professional dilemmas in particular present challenges to librarians: how to handle undemocratic voices and how to be a library for all.Originality/valueThe analysis points to a need for rethinking the idea of the meeting place and offers a rare example of an empirically based argument for the benefits of plural agonistics for analyzing and strengthening the democratic role of public libraries.

  • An Act of Balance : Exploring the Boundaries of Librarianship in Times of Political Turmoil in Sweden and Denmark
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reports from a study produced within the currently ongoing project Public libraries in a changed political landscape – a democratic mission for a new era? The paper compares experiences of librarians and library assistants in Sweden and Denmark concerning how they perceive the democratic role of the library profession in the political landscape of today. Relating to research on the democratic role of libraries, library ethics and issues on neutrality, empirical data was gathered through seven group interviews with library professionals from eleven local libraries in south Sweden and Jutland in Denmark. Results indicate a commonly perceived discrepancy between general formulations of values formulated in professional codes of ethics, and practical librarianship. Dealing with threats and challenges against liberal democratic values in the public library requires an ethical toolbox that in individual cases may question the need for value-neutrality among librarians and library assistants if the basic mission of the library is to be upheld.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an analysis of how library professionals in Sweden and Denmark perceive the democratic role of the library profession in the polarised political landscape of today. Relating to research on the democratic role of libraries, professional ethics and cultural policies, empirical data was gathered through seven group interviews with library professionals from eleven local libraries in south Sweden and Jutland in Denmark. Results indicate a commonly perceived discrepancy between general formulations of values found in professional codes of ethics, and practical librarianship. Dealing with threats and challenges against liberal democratic values in the public library requires professional ethical considerations that in individual cases may question the need for value-neutrality among library professionals if the basic democratic mission of the library is to be upheld.

  • Drag story hour at public libraries : the reading child and the construction of fear and othering in Swedish cultural policy debate
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0022-0418 .- 1758-7379. ; 80:7, s. 226-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to produce new knowledge about the positions that public libraries both take and are given in the conflicts over politics and identity that play out in contemporary cultural and library policy debates. Using conflicts over drag story hour at public libraries as case, the study seeks to contribute to an emerging body of research that delves into the challenges that public libraries as promoters of democracy are confronting in the conflictual political landscape of today.Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents an analysis of debates reported in news articles concerning Drag story hour events held at Swedish public libraries. Utilizing the analytical lenses of discourse theory and plural agonistics, the analysis serves to make visible the lines of conflicts drawn in these debates – particularly focusing on the intersection of different meanings ascribed to the notion of the reading child, and how fear is constructed and used as an othering devise in these conflicts.Findings: Different imaginings of the reading child and the construction and imagination of fear and safety shapes the Drag story hour debates. The controversies can be understood as a challenge to the previous hegemony regarding the direction and goals of Swedish cultural and library policy and the pluralistic democratic society these policies are meant to promote.Originality/value: The paper offers new insights into the consequences of the revival of radical right politics, populism and societal polarization, and the different responses from public libraries.

  • Function and Gene Expression of Islets Experimentally Transplanted to Muscle and Omentum
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cell Transplantation. - THOUSAND OAKS, CA USA : SAGE Publications. - 0963-6897 .- 1555-3892. ; 29, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Islet transplantation to the liver is a potential curative treatment for patients with type 1 diabetes. Muscle and the greater omentum are two alternative implantation sites, which can provide excellent engraftment and hold potential as future sites for stem-cell-derived beta-cell replacement. We evaluated the functional outcome after islet transplantation to muscle and omentum and found that alloxan-diabetic animals were cured with a low number of islets (200) at both sites. The cured animals had a normal area under the curve blood glucose response to intravenous glucose, albeit animals with intramuscular islet grafts had increased 120-min blood glucose levels. They also demonstrated an exaggerated counter regulatory response to hypoglycemia. The expression of genes important for beta-cell function was, at both implantation sites, comparable to that in native pancreatic islets. The gene expression of insulin (INS1 and INS2) and glucose transporter-2 was even increased, and the expression of lactate dehydrogenase decreased, at both sites when compared to native islets. We conclude that muscle and omentum provide excellent conditions for engraftment of transplanted islets. When compared to control, 200 islets implanted to the omentum displayed a restored glucose tolerance, whereas animals with intramuscular islet grafts of similar size displayed mild glucose intolerance.

  • Canaries of Democracy : The Role of Public Libraries in Times of Political Turmoil
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Public Library Quarterly. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1541-1540 .- 0161-6846. ; , s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports conclusions from a three-year research project on Swedish public libraries. The focus of the project is on librarians experience of libraries mission to promote democracy when democratic norms and values are challenged politically by radical right populism. Results of a longitudinal survey point to stability and lack of political interest over time, but increased societal polarization causes several ethical dilemmas for librarians. Examples of illegitimate political influence and librarians adapting to changes in the political climate call for renewed discussions on the professional role and understandings of democracy in library practice.
