  • Diamond graphitization by laser-writing for all-carbon detector applications
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Diamond and related materials. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0925-9635 .- 1879-0062. ; 75, s. 25-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The surface of a detector grade CVD polycrystalline diamond sample (5 x 5 x 0.05 mm(3)) was irradiated by an ArF excimer laser (lambda = 193 nm, T = 20 ns) to produce graphitic conductive layers. In particular, two sets of four parallel graphitic strip-like contacts, with 1 mm pitch, were created along the whole sample on the top and on the rear surfaces of the sample respectively. The two series of stripes lie normally to each other. Such a grid allows to obtain a segmented all-carbon device capable of giving bi-dimensional information on particle detection processes in nuclear applications. Afterwards, an extensive characterization of the samples was performed: SEM and micro-Raman investigations to study the morphological and structural evolution of the irradiated areas, EDS measurements to individuate any absorption phenomena from environment associated to laser treatment, and nanoindentation mapping to understand how the hard-soft transformation occurred depending on the locally transferred energy. Finally, current-voltage analyses were carried out checking the ohmic behavior of the diamond-graphite contact. By comparing the results of the different characterization analyses, a strong periodidty of the modified surface properties was found, confirming the reliability and reproducibility of the laser-induced graphitization process. The results demonstrate that the laser-writing technique is a good and fast solution to produce graphitic contacts on diamond surface and therefore represents a promising way to fabricate segmented all-carbon devices. • Assessing geographical differences in illicit drug consumption-A comparison of results from epidemiological and wastewater data in Germany and Switzerland
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Drug And Alcohol Dependence. - : Elsevier BV. - 0376-8716 .- 1879-0046. ; 161, s. 189-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Wastewater analysis is an innovative approach that allows monitoring illicit drug use at the community level. This study focused on investigating geographical differences in drug consumption by comparing epidemiological, crime and wastewater data. Methods: Wastewater samples were collected in 19 cities across Germany and Switzerland during one week, covering a population of approximately 8.1 million people. Self-report data and consumption offences for the investigated areas were used for comparison and to investigate differences between the indicators. Results: Good agreement between data sources was observed for cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants, whereas substantial discrepancies were observed for cocaine. In Germany, an important distinction could be made between Berlin, Dortmund and Munich, where cocaine and particularly amphetamine were more prevalent, and Dresden, where methamphetamine consumption was clearly predominant. Cocaine consumption was relatively homogenous in the larger urban areas of Switzerland, although prevalence and offences data suggested a more heterogeneous picture. Conversely, marked regional differences in amphetamine and methamphetamine consumption could be highlighted. Conclusions: Combining the available data allowed for a better understanding of the geographical differences regarding prevalence, typology and amounts of substances consumed. For cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants, the complementarity of survey, police and wastewater data could be highlighted, although notable differences could be identified when considering more stigmatised drugs (i.e. cocaine and heroin). Understanding illicit drug consumption at the national scale remains a difficult task, yet this research illustrates the added value of combining complementary data sources to obtain a more comprehensive and accurate picture of the situation.

  • Stimulation of AT2 receptor exerts beneficial effects in stroke-prone rats: focus on renal damage
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: J Hypertens. ; 27:12, s. 2444-2451
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND AIM: Angiotensin II acts through two major receptors: AT1-R and AT2-R. It is known that the stimulation of AT1-R mediates vasoconstriction, cell proliferation and fibrosis, aldosterone release and inflammatory response but, although the stimulation of AT2-R is thought to promote vasodilation and anti-inflammatory effects, its real in-vivo functions are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of specific and selective AT2-R stimulation on the pathological events occurring in spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats (SHRSPs). METHODS AND RESULTS: SHRSPs who were fed a high-salt diet underwent long-term treatment with vehicle or compound 21 (C21), a nonpeptide selective AT2-R agonist, at doses of 0.75, 5 and 10 mg/kg per day. The vehicle-treated rats developed brain abnormalities detectable by magnetic resonance imaging after 42.5 +/- 7.5 days, and died 43 +/- 9.5 days after the start of the dietary treatment. The highest C21 dose delayed the occurrence of brain damage (P < 0.001 vs. vehicle-treated SHRSPs) and prolonged survival (P < 0.001) without affecting blood pressure. These beneficial effects of C21 were abolished by the administration of PD123319, an AT2-R antagonist. C21 treatment preserved renal structure by preventing inflammatory cell infiltration, collagen accumulation, and the neo-expression of vimentin; it also prevented the increased plasma renin activity and accumulation of urinary acute-phase proteins observed in the vehicle-treated rats. CONCLUSION: Specific and selective AT2-R stimulation has beneficial effects on the pathological events occurring in SHRSPs. These data indicate a new avenue for the pharmacological treatment of diseases in which modulation of the renin-angiotensin system is required.
