  • Structural characterization of micellar aggregates in sodium dodecyl sulfate/aluminum nitrate/urea/water system in the synthesis of mesoporous alumina
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Part B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5207 .- 1520-6106. ; 108:23, s. 7735-7743

    • The mechanism of templated synthesis of ordered mesoporous alumina according to the recipe proposed by Yada et al. (Yada, M.; Machida, M.; Kijima, T. Chem. Commun. 1996, 769) using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as template, has been investigated by NMR self-diffusion and spin and fluorescence probe techniques. In the precursor solutions urea was found to produce a substantial shortening of the long entangled cylindrical aggregates characteristic of the SDS micellar solutions with aluminum salt in large excess. The formation of mesostructured hexagonal alumina was followed using spin probes incorporated in the SDS aggregates. No structural changes were observed during urea hydrolysis, before the onset of the precipitation. In the precipitate, the presence of the surfactant template is demonstrated as well as its interaction with the aluminum species. Time evolution of this interaction is also observed. Finally, the influence of the composition of the precursor system on the structure and thermal stability of as-synthesized alumina has been studied. It appears that hexagonally structured alumina is formed over a large range of compositions of the starting solution, with the dimension of the unit cell being almost constant. A model of precipitation is proposed that is based on the analogy with the formation of the hexagonal crystalline Al-DS precipitate in the ternary SDS/Al(NO3)(3)/water system.

  • Predicted climate change will increase the truffle cultivation potential in central Europe
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change affects the distribution of many species, including Burgundy and Perigord truffles in central and southern Europe, respectively. The cultivation potential of these high-prized cash crops under future warming, however, remains highly uncertain. Here we perform a literature review to define the ecological requirements for the growth of both truffle species. This information is used to develop niche models, and to estimate their cultivation potential in the Czech Republic under current (2020) and future (2050) climate conditions. The Burgundy truffle is already highly suitable for cultivation on similar to 14% of agricultural land in the Czech Republic (8486 km(2)), whereas only similar to 8% of the warmest part of southern Moravia are currently characterised by a low suitability for Perigord truffles (6418 km(2)). Though rising temperatures under RCP8.5 will reduce the highly suitable cultivation areas by 7%, the 250 km(2) (3%) expansion under low-emission scenarios will stimulate Burgundy truffles to benefit from future warming. Doubling the moderate and expanding the highly suitable land by 352 km(2) in 2050, the overall cultivation potential for Perigord truffles will rise substantially. Our findings suggest that Burgundy and Perigord truffles could become important high-value crops for many regions in central Europe with alkaline soils. Although associated with uncertainty, long-term investments in truffle cultivation could generate a wide range of ecological and economic benefits.

  • Safety and Tolerability of SGLT2 Inhibitors in Cardiac Amyloidosis—A Clinical Feasibility Study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Medicine. - 2077-0383. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) slow the progression of renal dysfunction and improve the prognosis of patients with heart failure. Amyloidosis constitutes an important subgroup for which evidence is lacking. Amyloidotic fibrils originating from misfolded transthyretin and light chains are the causal agents in ATTR and AL amyloidosis. In these most frequent subtypes, cardiac involvement is the most common organ manifestation. Because cardiac and renal function frequently deteriorate over time, even under best available treatment, SGLT2i emerge as a promising treatment option due to their reno- and cardioprotective properties. We retrospectively analyzed patients with cardiac amyloidosis, who received either dapagliflozin or empagliflozin. Out of 79 patients, 5.1% had urinary tract infections; 2 stopped SGLT2i therapy; and 2.5% died unrelated to the intake of SGLT2i. No genital mycotic infections were observed. As expected, a slight drop in the glomerular filtration rate was noted, while the NYHA functional status, cardiac and hepatic function, as well as the 6 min walk distance remained stable over time. These data provide a rationale for the use of SGLT2i in patients with amyloidosis and concomitant cardiac or renal dysfunction. Prospective randomized data are desired to confirm safety and to prove efficacy in this increasingly important group of patients.
