  • Crystal structure and phase transitions at high pressures in the superconductor FeSe0.89S0.11
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 860
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the structural phase transitions in the FeSe0.89S0.11 superconductor with T-C = 11 K observed by powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction at high pressures up to 18.5 GPa under compression and decompression modes. It was found that at ambient pressure and room temperature, FeSe0.89S0.11 has a tetragonal structure (space group NM). Under compression, in the region of 10 GPa, a phase transition from the tetragonal into the orthorhombic structure (sp. gr . Pnma) is observed, which persists up to 18.5 GPa. Our results strongly suggest that, at decompression, as the applied pressure decreases to 6 GPa and then is completely removed, most of the sample recrystallizes into the hexagonal phase of the structural type NiAs (sp. gr . P6(3)/mmc). However, the other part of the sample remains in the high pressure orthorhombic phase (sp. gr . Pnma), while the tetragonal phase (sp. gr . P4/n) is not restored. These observations illustrate a strong hysteresis of the structural properties of FeSe0.89S0.11 during a phase transition under pressure. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Competition between orbital effects, Pauli limiting, and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide superconductors
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 1367-2630. ; 24:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare the upper critical field of bulk single-crystalline samples of the two intrinsic transition metal dichalcogenide superconductors, 2H-NbSe2 and 2H-NbS2, in high magnetic fields where their layer structure is aligned strictly parallel and perpendicular to the field, using magnetic torque experiments and a high-precision piezo-rotary positioner. While both superconductors show that orbital effects still have a significant impact when the layer structure is aligned parallel to the field, the upper critical field of NbS2 rises above the Pauli limiting field and forms a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, while orbital effects suppress superconductivity in NbSe2 just below the Pauli limit, which excludes the formation of the FFLO state. From the out-of-plane anisotropies, the coherence length perpendicular to the layers of 31 angstrom in NbSe2 is much larger than the interlayer distance, leading to a significant orbital effect suppressing superconductivity before the Pauli limit is reached, in contrast to the more 2D NbS2.

  • Growth of Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides by Solvent Evaporation Technique
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 20:10, s. 6930-6938

    • Due to their physical properties and potential applications in energy conversion and storage, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered substantial interest in recent years. Among this class of materials, TMDs based on molybdenum, tungsten, sulfur, and selenium are particularly attractive due to their semiconducting properties and the availability of bottom-up synthesis techniques. Here we report a method which yields high-quality crystals of transition-metal diselenide and ditelluride compounds (PtTe2, PdTe2, NiTe2, TaTe2, TiTe2, RuTe2, PtSe2, PdSe2, NbSe2, TiSe2, VSe2, ReSe2) from their solid solutions, via vapor deposition from a metal-saturated chalcogen melt. Additionally, we show the synthesis of rare-earth-metal polychalcogenides and NbS2 crystals using the aforementioned process. Most of the crystals obtained have a layered CdI2 structure. We have investigated the physical properties of selected crystals and compared them to state of the art findings reported in the literature. Remarkably, the charge density wave transition in 1T-TiSe2 and 2H-NbSe2 crystals is well-defined at TCDW ≈ 200 and 33 K, respectively. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and electron diffraction are used to directly access the electronic and crystal structures of PtTe2 single crystals and yield state of the art measurements.

  • Stable Sulfuric Vapor Transport and Liquid Sulfur Growth on Transition Metal Dichalcogenides
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : ACS Publications. - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 23:4, s. 2287-2294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are an emergent class of low-dimensional materials with growing applications in the field of nanoelectronics. However, efficient methods for synthesizing large monocrystals of these systems are still lacking. Here, we describe an efficient synthetic route for a large number of TMDs that were obtained in quartz glass ampoules by sulfuric vapor transport and liquid sulfur. Unlike the sublimation technique, the metal enters the gas phase in the form of molecules, hence containing a greater amount of sulfur than the growing crystal. We have investigated the physical properties for a selection of these crystals and compared them to state-of-the-art findings reported in the literature. The acquired electronic properties features demonstrate the overall high quality of single crystals grown in this work as exemplified by CoS2, ReS2, NbS2, and TaS2. This new approach to synthesize high-quality TMD single crystals can alleviate many material quality concerns and is suitable for emerging electronic devices.

  • Evidence for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in bulk NbS2
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of the magnetic torque, specific heat and thermal expansion of the bulk transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor NbS2 in high magnetic fields, with its layer structure aligned strictly parallel to the field using a piezo rotary positioner. The upper critical field of superconducting TMDs in the 2D form is known to be dramatically enhanced by a special form of Ising spin orbit coupling. This Ising superconductivity is very robust to the Pauli paramagnetic effect and can therefore exist beyond the Pauli limit for superconductivity. We find that superconductivity beyond the Pauli limit still exists in bulk single crystals of NbS2 for a precisely parallel field alignment. However, the comparison of our upper critical field transition line with numerical simulations rather points to the development of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state above the Pauli limit as a cause. This is also consistent with the observation of a magnetic field driven phase transition in the thermodynamic quantities within the superconducting state near the Pauli limit. Superconductivity is often destroyed under magnetic field larger than a critical value called Pauli limit. Here, the authors report superconductivity beyond the Pauli limit in bulk single crystals of NbS2, suggesting the development of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state.

  • Interplay of charge density wave and multiband superconductivity in layered quasi-two-dimensional materials : The case of 2H-NbS2 and 2H-NbSe2
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2475-9953. ; 4:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite intense efforts on all known quasi-two-dimensional superconductors, the origin and exact boundary of the electronic orderings, particularly charge density waves and superconductivity, are still attractive problems with several open questions. Here, in order to reveal how the superconducting gap evolves, we report on high quality complementary measurements of magneto-optical imaging, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, resis-tivity measurements, Andreev spectroscopy, and London penetration depth lambda(ab)(T) measurements supplemented with theoretical calculations for 2H-NbSe2 and 2H-NbS2 single crystals. The temperature dependence of lambda(ab)(T) calculated from the lower critical field and Andreev spectroscopy can be well described by using a two-band model with s-wave-like gaps. The effect of pressure on the superconducting gap of both systems illustrates that both bands are practically affected. Upon compression, the Fermi surfaces do not change significantly, and the nesting remains almost unaffected compared to that at ambient condition. However, a strong bending in the upper critical fields (H-c2) curves is obtained under pressure and support the presence of a strong Pauli paramagnetic effect. In NbSe2, using a two-band model with s-wave-like gaps, the temperature dependence H-c2(T) can be properly described. In contrast to that, the behavior of H-c2 for NbS2 is ruled by the spin paramagnetic effect. The estimated values of the penetration depth at T = 0 K confirm that NbSe2 and NbS2 superconductors depart from a Uemura-style relationship between Tc with lambda(-2)(ab) (T ), the in-plane superconducting penetration depth.
