  • From Numerical Sensor Data to Semantic Representations : A Data-driven Approach for Generating Linguistic Descriptions
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In our daily lives, sensors recordings are becoming more and more ubiquitous. With the increased availability of data comes the increased need of systems that can represent the data in human interpretable concepts. In order to describe unknown observations in natural language, an artificial intelligence system must deal with several issues involving perception, concept formation, and linguistic description. These issues cover various subfields within artificial intelligence, such as machine learning, cognitive science, and natural language generation. The aim of this thesis is to address the problem of semantically modelling and describing numerical observations from sensor data. This thesis introduces data-driven approaches to perform the tasks of mining numerical data and creating semantic representations of the derived information in order to describe unseen but interesting observations in natural language. The research considers creating a semantic representation using the theory of conceptual spaces. In particular, the central contribution of this thesis is to present a data-driven approach that automatically constructs conceptual spaces from labelled numerical data sets. This constructed conceptual space then utilises semantic inference techniques to derive linguistic interpretations for novel unknown observations. Another contribution of this thesis is to explore an instantiation of the proposed approach in a real-world application. Specifically, this research investigates a case study where the proposed approach is used to describe unknown time series patterns that emerge from physiological sensor data. This instantiation first presents automatic data analysis methods to extract time series patterns and temporal rules from multiple channels of physiological sensor data, and then applies various linguistic description approaches (including the proposed semantic representation based on conceptual spaces) to generate human-readable natural language descriptions for such time series patterns and temporal rules. The main outcome of this thesis is the use of data-driven strategies that enable the system to reveal and explain aspects of sensor data which may otherwise be difficult to capture by knowledge-driven techniques alone. Briefly put, the thesis aims to automate the process whereby unknown observations of data can be 1) numerically analysed, 2) semantically represented, and eventually 3) linguistically described.

  • Perceptual anchoring via conceptual spaces
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Perceptual anchoring is the problem of creating and maintaining in time the connection between symbols and sensor data that refer to the same physical objects. This is one of the facets of the general problem of integrating symbolic and non-symbolic processes in an intelligent system. Gärdenfors' conceptual spaces provide a geometric treatment of knowledge which bridges the gap between the symbolic and sub-symbolic approaches. As such, they can be used for the study of the anchoring problem. In this paper, we propose a computational framework for anchoring based on conceptual spaces. Our framework exploits the geometric structure of conceptual spaces for many of the crucial tasks of anchoring, like matching percepts to symbolic descriptions or tracking the evolution of objects over time.

  • Internal Simulation of an Agent`s Intentions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures 2012 (Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 2194-5357. - 9783642342745 ; 196, s. 175-176
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the Associative Self-Organizing Map (A-SOM) and propose that it could be used to predict an agent's intentions by internally simulating the behaviour likely to follow initial movements. The A-SOM is a neural network that develops a representation of its input space without supervision, while simultaneously learning to associate its activity with an arbitrary number of additional (possibly delayed) inputs. We argue that the A-SOM would be suitable for the prediction of the likely continuation of the perceived behaviour of an agent by learning to associate activity patterns over time, and thus a way to read its intentions.

  • Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Advanced Nonsquamous Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Receiving Bevacizumab or Bevacizumab-Plus-Pemetrexed Maintenance Therapy in AVAPERL (MO22089)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Thoracic Oncology. - : Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins. - 1556-0864 .- 1556-1380. ; 8:11, s. 1409-1416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: In the phase III AVAPERL trial, patients with advanced nonsquamous non-small-cell lung cancer receiving bevacizumab-plus-pemetrexed maintenance after first-line induction had a significant progression-free survival benefit relative to those treated with single-agent bevacizumab maintenance but with an increase in grade 3 adverse events. Here, we compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between AVAPERL maintenance arms. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods: Patient-reported outcomes were collected at designated intervals from preinduction to final visits. HRQOL was assessed using the self-administered European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 and the Quality of Life Lung Cancer-Specific Module 13. Differences in scores of 10 points or more between arms were above the minimum important difference threshold and considered clinically meaningful. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults: During induction, patient-reported coughing symptoms improved slightly, whereas fatigue and appetite loss scores worsened relative to preinduction baseline. During maintenance, changes in mean global health status and the majority of Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 and Quality of Life Lung Cancer-Specific Module 13 subscale scores did not differ between trial arms by the minimum important difference defining clinically meaningful (better or worse) patient-reported outcomes. Exceptions were patient-reported role functional status, fatigue symptoms and appetite loss symptoms (favoring bevacizumab), and pain in arm or shoulder symptoms (favoring bevacizumab-plus-pemetrexed maintenance), which differed by clinically meaningful amounts at more than one maintenance assessment. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusions: In AVAPERL, HRQOL remained relatively stable throughout maintenance and was generally similar in both arms. Despite an increase in adverse event rates, the addition of pemetrexed to bevacizumab maintenance resulted in similar stabilization of disease symptoms with improved efficacy outcomes.
