  • Global Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Stroke Volumes and Cerebrovascular Events: A 1-Year Follow-up.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Neurology. - 1526-632X. ; 100:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Declines in stroke admission, IV thrombolysis (IVT), and mechanical thrombectomy volumes were reported during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a paucity of data on the longer-term effect of the pandemic on stroke volumes over the course of a year and through the second wave of the pandemic. We sought to measure the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes of stroke admissions, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), IVT, and mechanical thrombectomy over a 1-year period at the onset of the pandemic (March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021) compared with the immediately preceding year (March 1, 2019, to February 29, 2020).We conducted a longitudinal retrospective study across 6 continents, 56 countries, and 275 stroke centers. We collected volume data for COVID-19 admissions and 4 stroke metrics: ischemic stroke admissions, ICH admissions, IVT treatments, and mechanical thrombectomy procedures. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes or classifications in stroke databases. There were 148,895 stroke admissions in the 1 year immediately before compared with 138,453 admissions during the 1-year pandemic, representing a 7% decline (95% CI [95% CI 7.1-6.9]; p < 0.0001). ICH volumes declined from 29,585 to 28,156 (4.8% [5.1-4.6]; p < 0.0001) and IVT volume from 24,584 to 23,077 (6.1% [6.4-5.8]; p < 0.0001). Larger declines were observed at high-volume compared with low-volume centers (all p < 0.0001). There was no significant change in mechanical thrombectomy volumes (0.7% [0.6-0.9]; p = 0.49). Stroke was diagnosed in 1.3% [1.31-1.38] of 406,792 COVID-19 hospitalizations. SARS-CoV-2 infection was present in 2.9% ([2.82-2.97], 5,656/195,539) of all stroke hospitalizations. There was a global decline and shift to lower-volume centers of stroke admission volumes, ICH volumes, and IVT volumes during the 1st year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the prior year. Mechanical thrombectomy volumes were preserved. These results suggest preservation in the stroke care of higher severity of disease through the first pandemic year. This study is registered under NCT04934020.

  • Recent Third Pole’s rapid warming accompanies cryospheric melt and water cycle intensification and interactions between monsoon and environment: multi-disciplinary approach with observation, modeling and analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of The American Meteorological Society. - 0003-0007 .- 1520-0477. ; :March, s. 423-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Third Pole (TP) is experiencing rapid warming and is currently in its warmest period in the past 2,000 years. This paper reviews the latest development in multidisciplinary TP research associated with this warming. The rapid warming facilitates intense and broad glacier melt over most of the TP, although some glaciers in the northwest are advancing. By heating the atmosphere and reducing snow/ice albedo, aerosols also contribute to the glaciers melting. Glacier melt is accompanied by lake expansion and intensification of the water cycle over the TP. Precipitation has increased over the eastern and northwestern TP. Meanwhile, the TP is greening and most regions are experiencing advancing phenological trends, although over the southwest there is a spring phenological delay mainly in response to the recent decline in spring precipitation. Atmospheric and terrestrial thermal and dynamical processes over the TP affect the Asian monsoon at different scales. Recent evidence indicates substantial roles that mesoscale convective systems play in the TP’s precipitation as well as an association between soil moisture anomalies in the TP and the Indian monsoon. Moreover, an increase in geohazard events has been associated with recent environmental changes, some of which have had catastrophic consequences caused by glacial lake outbursts and landslides. Active debris flows are growing in both frequency of occurrences and spatial scale. Meanwhile, new types of disasters, such as the twin ice avalanches in Ali in 2016, are now appearing in the region. Adaptation and mitigation measures should be taken to help societies’ preparation for future environmental challenges. Some key issues for future TP studies are also discussed.

  • A review of data-driven fault detection and diagnostics for building HVAC systems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 339
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the wide adoption of building automation system, and the advancement of data, sensing, and machine learning techniques, data-driven fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) for building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems has gained increasing attention. In this paper, data-driven FDD is defined as those that are built or trained from data via machine learning or multivariate statistical analysis methods. Following this definition, this paper reviews and summarizes the literature on data-driven FDD from three aspects: process, systems studied (including the systems being investigated, the faults being identified, and the associated data sources), and evaluation metrics. A data-driven FDD process is further divided into the following steps: data collection, data cleansing, data preprocessing, baseline establishment, fault detection, fault diagnostics, and potential fault prognostics. Literature reported data-driven methods used in each step of an FDD process are firstly discussed. Applications of data-driven FDD in various HVAC systems/components and commonly used data source for FDD development are reviewed secondly, followed by a summary of typical metrics for evaluating FDD methods. Finally, this literature review concludes that despite the promising performance reported in the literature, data-driven FDD methods still face many challenges, such as real-building deployment, performance evaluation and benchmarking, scalability and transferability, interpretability, cyber security and data privacy, user experience, etc. Addressing these challenges is critical for a broad real-building adoption of data-driven FDD.

  • Photoluminescence mapping of mid-wave infrared InAs/GaSb type II superlattice: Influence of materials and processes on spatial uniformity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388. ; 947
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The imaging performance of infrared focal plane array (FPA) is limited by the non-uniformity of the in-plane response of InAs/GaSb type II superlattices (T2SL) consisting of a few hundred or more thin layers. Fundamentally, the non-uniformity results from the materials’ property variation and process fluctuations over an area of a square centimeter. Thus, the influence of materials and processes on the uniformity of internal response is necessary to accurately detect and evaluate to improve the imaging performance of an FPA detector. In this work, spatially resolved photoluminescence (PL) was implemented to detect the microscale mesa pixels, and the effects of materials and processes on spatial uniformity were studied for the first time. Modulated PL-mapping technology based on step-scan Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was used to extract parameters from each test spectrum, such as PL peak energy, linewidth, and integral intensity, which were then analyzed by 2D spatial mapping. Results showed that the variation of T2SL material properties accounted for 29% of the non-uniformity, and the remaining 71% resulted from the process fluctuation. In particular, the etching process had a great influence on the uniformity. The non-uniformity of the integral intensity of the sample after etching increased by 2.44 times compared with that before etching. Thereafter, a layer of SiO2 film was deposited to passivate the surface. The results showed that the non-uniformity returned to the level before etching, which directly proves that the passivation process can improve the response uniformity of the infrared FPA detector.

  • The draft genome of whitefly Bemisia tabaci MEAM1, a global crop pest, provides novel insights into virus transmission, host adaptation, and insecticide resistance
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BMC Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1741-7007. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is among the 100 worst invasive species in the world. As one of the most important crop pests and virus vectors, B. tabaci causes substantial crop losses and poses a serious threat to global food security. Results: We report the 615-Mb high-quality genome sequence of B. tabaci Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1), the first genome sequence in the Aleyrodidae family, which contains 15,664 protein-coding genes. The B. tabaci genome is highly divergent from other sequenced hemipteran genomes, sharing no detectable synteny. A number of known detoxification gene families, including cytochrome P450s and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases, are significantly expanded in B. tabaci. Other expanded gene families, including cathepsins, large clusters of tandemly duplicated B. tabaci-specific genes, and phosphatidylethanolamine-binding proteins (PEBPs), were found to be associated with virus acquisition and transmission and/or insecticide resistance, likely contributing to the global invasiveness and efficient virus transmission capacity of B. tabaci. The presence of 142 horizontally transferred genes from bacteria or fungi in the B. tabaci genome, including genes encoding hopanoid/sterol synthesis and xenobiotic detoxification enzymes that are not present in other insects, offers novel insights into the unique biological adaptations of this insect such as polyphagy and insecticide resistance. Interestingly, two adjacent bacterial pantothenate biosynthesis genes, panB and panC, have been co-transferred into B. tabaci and fused into a single gene that has acquired introns during its evolution. Conclusions: The B. tabaci genome contains numerous genetic novelties, including expansions in gene families associated with insecticide resistance, detoxification and virus transmission, as well as numerous horizontally transferred genes from bacteria and fungi. We believe these novelties likely have shaped B. tabaci as a highly invasive polyphagous crop pest and efficient vector of plant viruses. The genome serves as a reference for resolving the B. tabaci cryptic species complex, understanding fundamental biological novelties, and providing valuable genetic information to assist the development of novel strategies for controlling whiteflies and the viruses they transmit.

  • Separable amino-functionalized biochar/alginate beads for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from original electroplating wastewater at room temperature
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An alginate gel bead composite adsorbent with polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a surface modifier and Eichhornia crassipes (EC) biochar, known as EC-alg/PEI-3, was added internally to the adsorb Cr(VI) from an aqueous environment. The functionalized gel beads were characterized using SEM, XPS, FTIR, and other techniques. The maximum adsorption capacities of EC-alg/PEI-3 were 714.3 mg g−1 at 10 °C and 769.2 mg g−1 at 25 °C. In the treatment of highly concentrated electroplating wastewater, EC-alg/PEI-3 can be dosed at 1.4 g L−1 to reduce the concentration of Cr(VI) to below 0.05 ppm. EC-alg/PEI-3 maintained a competitive adsorption capacity after six cycles. This spherical adsorbent material is easy to prepare, has a very high adsorption capacity, is environmentally friendly, and can be easily recycled. The EC-alg/PEI-3 gel beads are promising for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

  • Separatable MoS2 loaded biochar/CaCO3/Alginate gel beads for selective and efficient removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Separation and Purification Technology. - : Elsevier. - 1383-5866 .- 1873-3794. ; 303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Centimeter-scale composite biochar-alginate gel beads (MoS2B/CaCO3/Alg) were designed for the adsorption of Pb(II) in water using MoS2 modified biochar as the filler, alginate as the matrix, and CaCO3 as the active additive component. The composite gel beads were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and other techniques. MoS2B/CaCO3/Alg showed excellent adsorption capacity over a wide range of pH 4–7. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained using the Langmuir model were 769.2, 833.3, and 909.1 mg g−1 at 10, 25 and 40 °C, respectively. At a dosing rate of 0.4 g L−1, MoS2B/CaCO3/Alg was able to reduce the Pb(II) concentration to below 0.05 ppm in complex simulated lead battery wastewater. After 10 repeated cycles, MoS2B/CaCO3/Alg maintained a high removal rate of 98.4 %. This spherical adsorbent is simple to prepare and easy to recover, has an ultra-high adsorption capacity, and is mechanically stable and resistant to interference, thus it is expected to be suitable for application in industrial wastewater treatment.

  • Gut microbiota-derived metabolite trimethylamine-N-oxide and multiple health outcomes : an umbrella review and updated meta-analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Oxford University Press. - 0002-9165 .- 1938-3207. ; 116:1, s. 230-243
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota-derived metabolite produced from dietary nutrients. Many studies have discovered that circulating TMAO concentrations are linked to a wide range of health outcomes. Objectives: This study aimed to summarize health outcomes related to circulating TMAO concentrations. Methods: We searched the Embase. Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception to 15 February, 2022 to identify and update meta-analyses examining the associations between 'TAO and multiple health outcomes. For each health outcome, we estimated the summary effect size. 95% prediction CI. between-study heterogeneity. evidence of small-study effects, and evidence of excess-significance bias. These metrics were used to evaluate the evidence credibility of the identified associations. Results: This umbrella review identified 24 meta-analyses that investigated the association between circulating 'TAO concentrations and health outcomes including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes mellitus (DM), cancer. and renal function. We updated these meta-analyses by including a total of 82 individual studies on 18 unique health outcomes. Among them, 14 associations were nominally significant. After evidence credibility assessment, we found 6 (33%) associations (i.e., all-cause mortality, CVD mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events, hypertension. DM, and glomerular filtration rate) to present highly suggestive evidence. Conclusions: TMAO might be a novel biomarker related to human health conditions including all-cause mortality, hypertension. CVD, DM. cancer, and kidney function. Further studies are needed to investigate whether circulating 'MAO concentrations could be an intervention target for chronic disease.

  • Balancing the pre-aggregation and crystallization kinetics enables high efficiency slot-die coated organic solar cells with reduced non-radiative recombination losses
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy & Environmental Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1754-5692 .- 1754-5706. ; 13:8, s. 2467-2479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Slot-die coating being compatible with the roll-to-roll technique has been regarded as a promising tool for upscaling the manufacturing of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, there has been a significant gap between the efficiencies of the state-of-the-art spin-coated devices and the scalable processed devices. The active layer morphology is crucial to achieve high efficiency in OSCs, which depends on the conditions of film fabrication. To figure out and optimize the slot-die coating process, a deeper understanding of the film formation kinetics is important. Herein, in situ measurements of the slot-die coating process based on the PM7:IT4F system are demonstrated to illustrate the aggregation and crystallization evolution at various die temperatures and substrate temperatures. OSCs with a high power conversion efficiency of 13.2% are achieved at 60 degrees C die temperature/60 degrees C substrate temperature due to the improved exciton dissociation, charge transport and suppressed non-radiative charge recombination. The optimized morphology is attributed to the balanced polymer pre-aggregation and small molecule crystallization kinetics. The unsuitable die temperature leads to overlarge phase separation and consequently inefficient exciton dissociation while the improper substrate temperature results in weak crystallization and the following shrunken carrier lifetime with strong non-radiative combination. This work provides fundamental understanding on the correlations among processing methodology, solution pre-aggregation, morphology formation kinetics, device physics and device performance and affords guidance for device optimization in scalable manufacturing.

  • Cu Nanoparticle-Decorated Boron-Carbon-Nitrogen Nanosheets for Electrochemical Determination of Chloramphenicol
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 14:25, s. 28956-28964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present work, irregular Cu nanoparticle-decorated boron-carbon-nitrogen (Cu-BCN) nanosheets were successfully synthesized. A Cu-BCN dispersion was deposited on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to prepare an electrochemical sensor (Cu-BCN/GCE) for the detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) in the environment. Cu-BCN was characterized using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The performance of the Cu-BCN/GCE was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and its advantages were proven by electrode comparison. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to optimize the experimental conditions, including the amount of Cu-BCN deposited, enrichment potential, deposition time, and pH of the electrolyte. A linear relationship between the CAP concentration and current response was obtained under the optimized experimental conditions, with a wide linear range and a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.41 nmol/L. Cu-BCN/GCE exhibited high stability, reproducibility, and repeatability. In the presence of various organic and inorganic species, the influence of the Cu-BCN-based sensor on the current response of CAP was less than 5%. Notably, the prepared sensor exhibited excellent performance in real-water samples, with satisfactory recovery.
