  • Impact of Denial of Service Solutions onNetwork Quality of Service
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Security and Communication Networks. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1939-0114 .- 1939-0122. ; 4:10, s. 1089-1103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Internet has become a universal communication network tool. It has evolved from a platform that supportsbest-effort traffic to one that now carries different traffic types including those involving continuous media withQuality of Service (QoS) requirements. As more services are delivered over the Internet, we face increasing riskto their availability given that malicious attacks on those Internet services continue to increase. Several networkshave witnessed Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks over the past few yearswhich have disrupted QoS of network services, thereby violating the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between theclient and the Internet Service Provider (ISP). Hence DoS or DDoS attacks are major threats to network QoS. Inthis paper we survey techniques and solutions that have been deployed to thwart DoS and DDoS attacks and weevaluate them in terms of their impact on network QoS for Internet services. We also present vulnerabilities thatcan be exploited for QoS protocols and also affect QoS if exploited. In addition, we also highlight challenges thatstill need to be addressed to achieve end-to-end QoS with recently proposed DoS/DDoS solutions.

  • Energy-Efficient Multimedia Data Dissemination in Vehicular Clouds : Stochastic-Reward-Nets-Based Coalition Game Approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Systems Journal. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 1932-8184 .- 1937-9234. ; 10:2, s. 847-858
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate an energy efficiency issue for multimedia applications in a vehicular cloud environment. The problem of energy efficiency is formulated as a stochastic reward nets (SRNs)-based coalition game, in which vehicles are assumed as the players that formulate the coalition among themselves using a predefined criteria based on the demand generated and the available resources at the nearest cloudlet. A demand- and supply-based payoff value function is formulated for each player in the game. The processes and actions of the players are represented as SRNs in which each player should have a finite number of tokens to fire its actions. To reduce the delay, each vehicle accesses resources such as memory, processing power, and storage from the nearest cloudlet that may be either at the road side units deployed near the road or on the vehicles. The actions of the players are associated with a cardinality that represents the number of rewards and actions they have taken in a unit interval of time after interacting with an environment that is stochastic in this paper. For each action performed by the players, they may get feedback in the form of a reward or a penalty, according to which each player updates its action probability vector that helps them take the next actions in the game. An energy-efficient algorithm for frame scheduling using the nearest cloudlet is also proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm is found to be satisfactory with respect to various evaluation metrics. In particular, there is an increment of 10%–15% in profit generation, with 20%–25% reduction in the delay, and an increment of 20% in the packet delivery ratio. © 2015 IEEE

  • Performance Analysis of Bayesian Coalition Game-Based Energy-Aware Virtual Machine Migration in Vehicular Mobile Cloud
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Network. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 0890-8044 .- 1558-156X. ; 29:2, s. 62-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To provide computing and communication services to mobile clients, vehicular mobile cloud computing has gained lot of attention in recent times. However, one of the biggest challenges for the smooth execution of these services in this environment is the intelligent usage of VMs which may be overloaded due to numerous requests from mobile clients such as vehicles and mobile devices to access these services. However, poor utilization of VMs in this environment causes a lot of energy to be wasted. To address this issue, we propose Bayesian coalition game as-aservice for intelligent context-switching of VMs to support the above defined services in order to reduce the energy consumption, so that clients can execute their services without a performance degradation. In the proposed scheme, we have used the concepts of learning automata (LA) and game theory in which LA are assumed as the players such that each player has an individual payoff based upon the energy consumption and load on the VM. Players interact with the stochastic environment for taking action such as the selection of appropriate VMs and based upon the feedback received from the environment, they update their action probability vector. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by using various performance evaluation metrics such as context-switching delay, overhead generated, execution time, and energy consumption. The results obtained show that the proposed scheme performs well with respect to the aforementioned performance metrics. Specifically, using the proposed scheme there is a reduction of 10 percent in energy consumption, 12 percent in network delay, 5 percent in overhead generation, and 10 percent in execution time. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

  • Scheduling performance enhancement by network coding in wireless mesh networks
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IET Communications. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 1751-8628 .- 1751-8636. ; 6:13, s. 1912-1919
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When a wireless mesh network accommodates interactive applications with quality of service requirements, schedule-based protocols are more suitable than contention-based protocols. In this paper, the problem of determining an appropriate schedule assignment for multiple group transmissions within a spatial time division multiple access link scheduling network is referred to as an integrated multiple-group communication and link scheduling problem. A polynomial-time scheduling algorithm, designated as a source-parallel-aware assignment (SPAA), is proposed to increase the spatial utilisation within each time slot in order to enhance the network throughput. Furthermore, an advanced version of SPAA, designated as joint source-parallel-aware assignment with network coding (JSANC), is proposed to reduce the effects of bottleneck paths on the schedule frame length by flexibly applying conventional or opportunistic network coding approaches. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve a better network throughput than existing flow-based or particular order-based scheduling schemes.

  • Concurrent multipath transmission combining forward error correction and path interleaving for video streaming
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Computer Communications. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0140-3664 .- 1873-703X. ; 34:9, s. 1125-1136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Video streaming is a popular application on next generation networks (NGNs). However, video streaming over NGNs has many challenges due to the high bit error rates of these networks. Forward error correction (FEC) is often applied to improve the quality of video streaming. However, continuous lost packets decrease the recovery performance of FEC protection in NGNs. To disperse continuous lost packets to different FEC blocks, we propose a concurrent multipath transmission that combines FEC with path interleaving. Our proposed control scheme adaptively adjusts the FEC block length and concurrently sends data interleaved over multiple paths. Experimental results with our approach show improved packet loss and signal to noise ratio performance. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • MAC-level Forward Error Correction mechanism for minimum error recovery overhead and retransmission
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Mathematical and computer modelling. - Oxford : Pergamon Press. - 0895-7177 .- 1872-9479. ; 53:11-12, s. 2067-2077
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless transmission suffers from poor wireless channel conditions, such as high bit error rate and error bursts resulting from channel fading and radio interference. The MAC-level Forward Error Correction (MFEC) mechanism is proposed to solve these problems. The MFEC mechanism cannot only adaptively adjust Forward Error Correction (FEC) redundancy, depending on the network condition, but can also retransmit whole packets even if the error packet includes several bit errors. In this paper, an Adaptive MAC-level FEC (AMFEC) mechanism is proposed to improve wireless transmission quality. The AMFEC mechanism relies on the effective packet loss rate model to dynamically adjust MFEC redundancy in order to minimize error recovery overhead. The AMFEC mechanism will retransmit the error of sub-packets and increase FEC redundancy to reduce transmission redundancy. The AMFEC mechanism not only enhances the quality of wireless transmission but also reduces the overhead of retransmission. The experimental results show the AMFEC mechanism is better than conventional MFEC mechanisms. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Scalability analysis of infrastructure networks for vehicular safety applications
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2012 International Conference on Connected Vehicles and Expo, ICCVE 2012. - New York : IEEE Communications Society. - 9780769549002 ; , s. 124-127
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vehicular adhoc networks are able to provide the awareness among cars, which is exploited by the emergent automotive safety applications, such as lane change warning and electronic brakes. Beaconing, i.e. periodic broadcasting of status messages by each vehicle, is a core communication pattern which all the critical vehicular safety applications rely on. A set of IEEE 802.11p/WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments) protocols is specially designed to support vehicleto-vehicle communication. Notwithstanding, many studies raise the scalability problem of 802.11p carrier sense multiple access, which makes it impossible for the protocol to guarantee the required performance in dense road traffic scenarios. Thus, existing cellular broadband wireless access (BWA) infrastructure, e.g. 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE), IEEE 802.16e (Mobile WiMAX), can be considered as an additional opportunity to support vehicular cooperative safety applications. In this paper we introduce a simple stochastic model for the evaluation of the BWA network used for the beaconing. This model can serve as an easy tool to understand the theoretical limits of different BWA technologies in intelligent transportation systems use cases. © 2012 IEEE.
