- During the last few decades, the PSS literature has documented industrial firms' transformation from the product dominant logic of business to product-service bundles constituted by machines and related services. This transformation has had several dramatic implications on firms' profitability, strategy, operations, organizational setting, sales and marketing approaches, and R&D practices. However, more recently, industrial firms have started to adopt various smart technologies that are embedded within the PSS. The use of smart technologies in PSS gives rise to the new types of PSS that are referred to in this paper as Smart PSS. Based on a literature review of 43 papers from relevant academic fields, this paper seeks answer to the following research question: what are the value creating features of smart product service systems (Smart PSS) in industrial firms? We synthesize the knowledge on Smart PSS to provide a definition and show the distinctive features of Smart PSS and propose an agenda for future research.

- Although IT is playing a significant role in road freight transportation and logistics, there exists a lack of comprehensive knowledge of IT and productivity in the area. This paper presents a review of the research on IT-productivity in the operations and maintenance of road freight transportation and logistics as well as proposes directions for future research. We have conducted the review in both academic and non-academic sources. Based on 26 papers, we have structured the review in three levels: industry level, firm level, and individual level. A number of insights have been made, which characterize the current state of knowledge. Several insights call for further research. We have found that there is a diversity in the terminologies when referring to the positive impact of IT on fuel efficiency for road freight transportation and logistics. Our findings suggest that there is a lack of methodological diversity while understanding the effect of IT on load efficiency in transportation. The existing field experiments can be characterized by two phase design, small sample size and short time for the intervention phase. There is a lack of conceptualization of complementarities when the existing studies show the importance of incentives and training with the introduction of a new digital technology in relation to productivity. This paper is a first attempt to synthesize relevant research on IT-productivity in the operations and maintenance in road freight transportation and logistics.

- Increasing the fuel efficiency of industrial machines through digitalization can enable the transport and logistics sector to overcome challenges such as low productivity growth and increasing CO2 emissions. Modern digitalized machines with embedded sensors that collect and transmit operational data have opened up new avenues for the identification of more efficient machine use. While existing studies of industrial machines have mostly focused on one or a few conditioning factors at a time, this study took a complementary approach, using a large set of known factors that simultaneously conditioned both the fuel consumption and productivity of medium-range forklifts (n = 285) that operated in a natural industrial setting for one full year. The results confirm the importance of a set of factors, including aspects related to the vehicles’ travels, drivers, operations, workload spectra, and contextual factors, such as industry and country. As a novel contribution, this study shows that the key conditioning factors interact with each other in a non-linear and non-additive manner. This means that addressing one factor at a time might not provide optimal fuel consumption, and instead all factors need to be addressed simultaneously as a system.

- The current business environment demands the enablement of organization-wide use of analytics to support a fact-based decision making. Such movement within the organization require employees to take advantage of the self-service business analytics tools to independently fulfil their needs. However, assuming independence in data analytics requires employees to make sense of several elements which collectively contribute to the generation of required insights. Building on sense-making, self-service business analytics, and institutions literature, this paper explores the relationship between sense-making and self-service business analytics and how institutions influence and shape such relationship. By adopting a qualitative perspective and using 22 interviews, we have empirically investigated a model developed through our literature review and provided more understanding of the sense-making concept in a self-service business analytics context.

- In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework for identifying the logic of digital services. Digital services are those services that we acquire after the digitalization of previously non-digital products or services. The objective of the framework is to apply it in identifying the logic of digital services which are the results of digital innovation in the context of remote diagnostic services in the vehicle industry. While building the framework, looking at the transformation of the non-digital to digital service and the involvement of physical products, i.e., digital devices in the transformation, it was found essential to identify the logic of the digital services on the basis of service logic and goods logic.For that purpose, we have reviewed the literature on service logic and goods logic as those logics discuss differently about the determination and meaning of value, role of customer, role of physical products, primary unit of exchange and some other aspects which are important to know in case of transforming a non-digital service to digital service. These logics and the concept of digital innovation are utilized in building the framework for identifying the logic of digital services.

- In this paper, we characterize the architecture of digital services that are enabled by embedded technology. Digitalization with embedded technology in physical products has become a common phenomenon. In spite of growing instance of such digitalization, little is known about the architectural characteristics of digital services enabled by embedded technology. Based on a research on vehicular remote diagnostics services, we characterize the architecture of such digital services. Following the framework on layered modular architecture continuum, our findings provide the following architectural characteristics: i) the architecture of the digital services spans along the layered modular architecture continuum, ii) the application program of the digital services is simultaneously de-coupled and partly coupled with the embedded devices, iii) there exist layers within layer of the digital services, iv) application program layer of the digital services is a closed innovation platform. © 2014 IEEE

- Remote diagnostics is expanding the business scope of vehicle manufacturers, ranging from products to services. In this paper, we focus on investigating the business challenges and opportunities related to the remote diagnostics of vehicles from an IT-based resource perspective. Remote diagnostics involves technology, human skills and intangibles. IT-based resources consist of physical IT infrastructure, human IT skills and IT-enabled intangibles. In this study, we find that remote diagnostics not only faces challenges in these three categories of IT-based resource, but also creates opportunities. One contribution of this paper is to provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities for business related to the technology. The paper also makes a contribution to information systems by shedding light on the discussion of digital infrastructure. It also highlights the application of IT-based resource perspective to find out the business challenges and opportunities of an emerging technology like remote diagnostics.

- With the advent of digitalization, e-services are now enabled by embedded digital technologies in physical products such as vehicles, elevators, construction equipment. In spite of numerous instances of e-services enabled by the digitalization of physical products, little research has been carried out to investigate the characteristics of co-creation of such e-services. This paper attempts to fill the gap by reporting from a three-year long research project with a vehicle manufacturing company. Using the translation phases from the Actor-Network theory (ANT) as a theoretical lens, this paper presents three propositions that characterize the co-creation of e-services enabled by the digitalization of physical products. The propositions highlight the role of physical products, establishment of trust and setting priorities about digitalization.
