  • Bioadhesive Lipid Compositions : Self-Assembly Structures, Functionality, and Medical Applications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Molecular Pharmaceutics. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1543-8384 .- 1543-8392. ; 11:3, s. 895-903
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lipid-based liquid crystalline compositions of phospholipids and diglycerides have unique bioadhesive properties with several medical applications, as exemplified by a lipid-based medical device indicated for management and relief of intraoral pain. The present paper describes the relation between self-assembly properties of phosphatidyl choline (PC) and glycerol dioleate (GDO) mixtures in the presence of aqueous fluids and functional attributes of the system, including: film formation and bioadhesion, intraoral coverage, acceptance by patients, and potential as a drug delivery system. The phase behavior of PC/GDO was characterized using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering. Functional properties, including the presence of study formulations at intraoral surfaces, ease of attachment, taste, and degree of and intraoral pain, were assessed in a crossover clinical pilot study in head and neck cancer patients. An optimum in functional properties was indicated for formulations with a PC/GDO weight ratio of about 35/65, where the lipids form a reversed cubic liquid crystalline micellar phase structure (Fd3m space group) over the relevant temperature range (25-40 degrees C).

  • Oral pigmentation in the hard palate associated with imatinib mesylate therapy : a report of three cases
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology, oral radiology, and endodontics. - : Elsevier. - 1079-2104 .- 1528-395X. ; 111:5, s. e12-e16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Imatinib mesylate is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor which targets Bcr-Abl-protein, c-Kit, and platelet-derived growth factor receptor. The drug was originally developed for treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia but is also regarded as first-line treatment of patients with metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST). Dermatologic side effects are common, with superficial edema and rash as the most frequent. In addition, imatinib mesylate treatment is often associated with hypopigmentation. Intraoral side effects are very rare. The present paper demonstrates 1 patient with GIST and 2 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia treated with imatinib mesylate for 5-6 years. All 3 patients presented with diffuse solitary bluish-brown pigmentations in the hard palate. The lesions persisted at follow-ups. There were no other pigmentations in the oral mucosa. The histopathologic examination showed depositions of melanin pigment in the lamina propria. The possible relationship between the observed melanotic maculae and imatinib mesylate treatment is discussed.

  • An industrial case study on using language workbench technology for realizing model-driven engineering
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: MODELSWARD 2014 - Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Model-Driven Engineering and Software Development. - Lisbon : SciTePress. - 9789897580079
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is a proven approach to improve software development processes by automation. However, traditional development of MDE tooling requires a high upfront cost. Recent developments in language workbench technologies promise to significantly reduce these investment costs. By providing domain experts with targeted projections, the speed and quality of delivering customer value is improved. This paper provides results from an industrial case study in the telecommunications domain and compares the value of using a language workbench to traditional MDE technologies. Evaluation of the approach was based on qualitative research strategy which involved a proof of concept implementation and effort estimations by tooling experts. Our results, using the Intentional Domain Workbench, indicate that applying a language workbench promises significant improvements in several aspects of MDE based software development. Most notably in this paper: (1) improved speed in development of domain specific tooling and (2) improved speed in software development process re-engineering.
