  • What Is the Future of Modeling?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Software. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 0740-7459 .- 1937-4194. ; 38:2, s. 119-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modeling languages and frameworks have been the key technology for advancing model-driven engineering (MDE) methods and tools. Many industrial and research tools have been realized and are used across many domains. Hence, we think it is the right time to define what should be the future of modeling technologies, especially the requirements for the next generation of modeling frameworks and languages.

  • How do we teach modelling and model-driven engineering? : A survey
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 21st ACM/IEEE International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. - 9781450359658 ; , s. 122-129
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the experiences of instructors teaching modelling and model-driven engineering is of great relevance to determining how MDE courses should be managed in terms of content, assessment, and teaching methods. In this paper, we report the results of a survey of 47 instructors in this field. Questions address course content, tools and technologies used, as well as positive and negative factors affecting learning outcomes. We analyse the results and summarise key findings with the potential of improving the state of teaching and learning practices. The survey is a preliminary effort in giving a structured overview on the state-of-the-practice within teaching modeling and model-driven engineering (from the point of view of the instructor).

  • Towards a body of knowledge for model-based software engineering
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 21st ACM/IEEE International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. - 9781450359658 ; , s. 82-89
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Model-based Software Engineering (MBSE) is now accepted as a Software Engineering (SE) discipline and is being taught as part of more general SE curricula. However, an agreed core of concepts, mechanisms and practices - which constitutes the Body of Knowledge of a discipline - has not been captured anywhere, and is only partially covered by the SE Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK). With the goals of characterizing the contents of the MBSE discipline, promoting a consistent view of it worldwide, clarifying its scope with regard to other SE disciplines, and defining a foundation for a curriculum development on MBSE, this paper provides a proposal for an extension of the contents of SWEBOK with the set of fundamental concepts, terms and mechanisms that should constitute the MBSE Body of Knowledge.

  • Alignment of Requirements and Testing in Agile : An Industrial Experience
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing. - Cham : Springer Verlag. - 2194-5357 .- 2194-5365. ; 738, s. 225-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agile development aims at switching the focus from processes to interactions between stakeholders, from heavy to minimalistic documentation, from contract negotiation and detailed plans to customer collaboration and prompt reaction to changes. With these premises, requirements traceability may appear to be an overly exigent activity, with little or no return-of-investment. However, since testing remains crucial even when going agile, the developers need to identify at a glance what to test and how to test it. That is why, even though requirements traceability has historically faced a firm resistance from the agile community, it can provide several benefits when promoting precise alignment of requirements with testing. This paper reports on our experience in promoting traceability of requirements and testing in the data communications for mission-critical systems in an industrial Scrum project. We define a semi-automated requirements tracing mechanism which coordinates four traceability techniques. We evaluate the solution by applying it to an industrial project aiming at enhancing the existing Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol by adding Simple Network Management Protocol support.

  • Blended modelling - What, why and how
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2019 ACM/IEEE 22nd International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems Companion, MODELS-C 2019. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728151250 ; , s. 425-430
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Empirical studies indicate that user experience can significantly be improved in model-driven engineering. Blended modelling aims at mitigating this by enabling users to interact with a single model through different notations. Blended modelling contributes to various modelling qualities, including comprehensibility, analysability, and acceptability. In this paper, we define the notion of blended modelling and propose a set of dimensions that characterise blended modelling. The dimensions are grouped in two classes: user-oriented dimensions and realisation-oriented dimensions. Each dimension describes a facet that is relevant to blended modelling together with its domain (i.e., the range of values for that dimension). The dimensions offer a basic vocabulary to support tool developers with making well-informed design decisions as well as users to select appropriate tools and configure them according to the needs at hand. We illustrate how the dimensions apply to different cases relying on our experience with blended modelling. We discuss the impact of blended modelling on usability and user experience and sketch metrics to measure it. Finally, we outline a number of core research directions in this increasingly important modelling area.

  • Blended Graphical and Textual Modelling of UML-RT State-Machines : An Industrial Experience
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 13365. - Cham : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. - 9783031151156 ; , s. 22-44
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ever increasing complexity of modern software systems requires engineers to constantly raise the level of abstraction at which they operate to suppress the excessive complex details of real systems and develop efficient architectures. Model Driven Engineering has emerged as a paradigm that enables not only abstraction but also automation. UML, an industry de-facto standard for modelling software systems, has established itself as a diagram-based modelling language. However, focusing on only one specific notation limits human communication and the pool of available engineering tools. The results of our prior experiments support this claim and promote the seamless use of multiple notations to develop and manipulate models. In this paper we detail our efforts on the provision of a fully blended (i.e., graphical and textual) modelling environment for UML-RT state-machines in an industrial context. We report on the definition of a textual syntax and advanced textual editing for UML-RT state-machines as well as the provision of synchronization mechanisms between graphical and textual editors. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Protective efficacy of a multicomponent vector vaccine in cynomolgus monkeys after intrarectal simian immunodeficiency virus challenge
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: The Journal of general virology. - : Microbiology Society. - 0022-1317 .- 1465-2099. ; 85:Pt 5, s. 1191-1201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated the protective efficacy of a systemic triple vector (DNA/rSFV/rMVA)-based vaccine against mucosal challenge with pathogenic simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in cynomolgus monkeys. Animals were immunized at week 0 with DNA (intradermally), at weeks 8 and 16 with recombinant Semliki Forest virus (rSFV, subcutaneously) and finally, at week 24, with recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara strain (rMVA, intramuscularly). Both DNA and recombinant viral vectors expressed a wide range of SIV proteins (Gag, Pol, Tat, Rev, Env and Nef). This immunization strategy elicited cell-mediated rather than humoral responses that were especially increased following the last boost. Upon intrarectal challenge with pathogenic SIVmac251, three of the four vaccinated monkeys dramatically abrogated virus load to undetectable levels up to 41 weeks after challenge. A major contribution to this vaccine effect appeared to be the T-cell-mediated immune response to vaccine antigens (Gag, Rev, Tat, Nef) seen in the early phase of infection in three of the four vaccinated monkeys. Indeed, the frequency of T-cells producing antigen-induced IFN-γ mirrored virus clearance in the vaccinated and protected monkeys. These results, reminiscent of the efficacy of live attenuated virus vaccines, suggest that vaccination with a combination of many viral antigens can induce a robust and stable vaccine-induced immunity able to abrogate virus replication.
