  • Combined effect of global warming and increased CO2-concentration on vegetation growth in water-limited conditions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ecological Modelling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-3800 .- 1872-7026. ; 256, s. 23-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The most severe impact of climate change on vegetation growth and agriculture is likely to occur under water-limited conditions. Under such conditions the plants optimize the inward flux of CO2 and the outward flux of water vapor (the transpiration) by regulating the size of the stomatal openings. Higher temperature increases water loss through transpiration, forcing the plants to diminish the stomatal openings, which decreases photosynthesis. This is counteracted by higher CO2 concentration, which allows plants to maintain the inward flux of CO2 through the smaller openings. These two counteracting effects, combined with the change in precipitation, determine the net change of biological productivity. Here, a vegetation sensitivity approximation (VSA) is introduced, in order to understand and estimate the combined effect of changed temperature, CO2 and precipitation to first order. The VSA is based on the physical laws of gas flux through the stomatal openings, and is only valid under water-limited conditions. It assumes that the temperature depends logarithmically on the CO2 concentration with a given climate sensitivity. Precipitation is included by assuming that it is proportional to the transpiration. This is reasonable underwater-limited conditions, when transpiration is often a large fraction of the precipitation. The VSA is compared to simulations with the dynamic vegetation model LPJ. The agreement is reasonable, and the deviations can be understood by comparison with Koppen's definition of arid climate: in an arid climate growth increases more according to LPJ than according to the VSA, and in non-arid conditions the reverse is true. Both the VSA and the LPJ simulations generally show increased growth with increasing CO2 levels and the resulting temperature increase, assuming precipitation to be unchanged. Thus, in this case the negative temperature effect is more than compensated by the positive effect of CO2.

  • Percutaneously inserted long-term central venous catheters in pigs of different sizes
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Laboratory Animals. - : Sage Publications. - 0023-6772 .- 1758-1117. ; 49:3, s. 215-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pigs are used for long-term biomedical experiments requiring repeated injections, infusions and collections of blood samples. Thus, it is necessary for vascular catheters to be indwelling to avoid undue stress to the animals and the use of restraints. We propose a refined model of percutaneous insertion of long-term central venous catheters to minimize the surgical trauma and postoperative complications associated with catheter insertion. Different sizes of needles (18 Ga versus 21 Ga) for initial puncture of the veins were compared. In conventional pigs weighing less than 30 kg, catheter insertion may be facilitated by using a microintroducer set with a 21 Ga needle. In pigs weighing 50 kg, a standard 18 Ga needle may be preferable.

  • Tritium labeling of a class of spirooxazaindolamines possessing analgesic properties.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Synth. Appl. Isot. Labelled Compd., Proc. Int. Symp., 8th. ; , s. 285-288
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to study the mol. action of a class of spirooxazaindolamines with promising analgesic activity, tritiated material was prepd. Efficient synthesis of 3H-labeled material allowed essential information on the mol. mechanism for this class of compds. to be obtained. Different approaches for the introduction of the 3H-label on the spirooxazaindole skeleton via 3H-methyliodide were evaluated involving lithium-mediated coupling, zinc-mediated coupling and Stille coupling. Tritiation using 3H2 (g) with a Pd-catalyst was also tested. [on SciFinder(R)]

  • Comparative study and validation of a new analytical method for hydraulic modelling of bidirectional low temperature networks
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Energy. - 0360-5442. ; 296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bidirectional Low Temperature Networks (BLTNs) are an innovative technology of district heating and cooling systems. Because of their intrinsic feature of supplying simultaneous heating and cooling either directly from an energy source/sink or through distributed heat pumps and chillers, circulation pumps installed at each building extract water from the network and a distinct pressure cone is subsequently created. Variations in the amount (and direction) of the extracted water call for accurate hydraulic design and analysis to ensure safe and adequate network operation. This paper proposes a new analytical solution method for fast hydraulic modelling of BLTNs. The analytical method was compared against three numerical solution methods and validated using different current and future operating scenarios of a real-world bidirectional network. In all modelled cases, the calculated mass flows and pressure drops using the new analytical method yielded very small Normalised Mean Bias Error (NMBE) and Coefficient of Variation of the Root Mean Square Error (CV(RMSE)), suggesting excellent agreement between the analytical and numerical solution methods. The new analytical method offers better performance over its numerical counterparts due to its explicit nature, ease of implementation, and quick modelling time.

  • How to develop fifth-generation district heating and cooling in Sweden? : Application review and best practices proposed by middle agents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Reports. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2352-4847. ; 9, s. 4971-4983
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden has an ambitious plan to fully decarbonise district heating by 2030 and to contribute with negative emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050. The vagaries of the energy market associated with climate, political, and social changes entail cross-sectoral integration that can fulfill these national targets. Fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) is a relatively new concept of district energy systems that features a simultaneous supply of heating and cooling using power-to-heat technologies. This paper presents best practices for developing 5GDHC systems in Sweden to reach a consensus view on these systems among all stakeholders. A mixed-method combining best practice and roadmapping workshops has been used to disseminate mixed knowledge and experience from middle agents representing industry professionals and practitioners. Four successful implementations of 5GDHC systems are demonstrated and the important learned lessons are shared. The best practices are outlined for system planning, system modeling and simulation, prevailing business models for energy communities, and system monitoring. A roadmap from the middle agents’ point of view is composed and can be utilised to establish industry standards and common regulatory frameworks. © 2023 The Author(s)

  • Mice Lacking 12/15-Lipoxygenase have Attenuated Airway Allergic Inflammation and Remodeling.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology. - 1535-4989. ; 39:6, s. 648-656
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (LO)-1 has been implicated in allergic inflammation and asthma. The overall effect of 15-LO in allergic inflammation in vivo is, however, unclear. This study investigates systemic allergen sensitization and local allergic airway inflammation and remodeling in mice lacking the murine 12/15-LO, the ortholog to human 15-LO-1. Upon systemic sensitization with intraperitoneal ovalbumin, 12/15 LO(-/-) mice produced elevated levels of allergen-specific IgE compared to wild type (Wt) controls. However, when challenged with repeated aerosolized allergen sensitized 12/15 LO(-/-) mice had an impaired development of airway allergic inflammation compared to Wt controls, as indicated by reduced BAL fluid leukocytes (eosinophils, lymphocytes macrophages) and Th2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13) as well as tissue eosinophils. Allergen-induced airway epithelial proliferation was also significantly attenuated in 12/15 LO(-/-) mice whereas goblet cell hyperplasia was unaffected. However, 12/15 LO(-/-) mice had significantly reduced luminal mucus secretions compared to Wt controls. The repeated allergen challenges resulted in a dramatic increase of alpha-smooth muscle-actin positive alveolar cells in the peripheral airways, a phenomenon that was significantly less developed in 12/15 LO(-/-) mice. In conclusion, our data suggest that 12/15 LO(-/-) mice, although having a fully developed systemic sensitization, did not establish a fully developed allergic airway inflammation and associated manifestations of central and peripheral airway remodeling. These data suggest that 12/15-LO derived metabolites play an important pathophysiological role in allergen-induced inflammation and remodeling. Hence, pharmacologic targeting of the human 15-LO-1 may represent an attractive therapeutic strategy to control inflammation and remodeling in asthma.

  • Study on reduced process temperature for energy optimisation in mesophilic digestion : A lab to full-scale study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This unique study combined the lab and full scales to investigate how the anaerobic digestion process of sewage sludge was affected by a temperature change within the lower mesophilic temperature range (32–37.5 °C). Both scientific methane potential experiments and dewaterability studies were made to be used in changes of the operational conditions for a full-scale wastewater treatment plant. The aim of this study was to reduce anaerobic digestions heat consumption by altering the operational mesophilic temperature in first lab-scale experiments and then in continuation to full-scale conditions. The results of the study suggest that it is possible to save approximately 13% in heat energy demand each year by reducing the temperature for anaerobic digestion by 2.5 °C. At the lab scale, the effect of temperature on biogas production was tested in a batch experiment by measuring the biochemical methane production. At 32 °C, the production of biogas decreased by 11% compared to that at 37.5 °C. No significant difference was observed between 37.5 °C and 34.5 °C. The effect of temperature on sludge dewaterability was tested by measuring the capillary suction time, and no difference was detected between various temperatures. To confirm these results, the temperature in two full-scale digesters was gradually adjusted from 37.5 °C to 35 °C. No change was observed in biogas production, process stability, or dewaterability. The amount of heat energy that can be saved for the full-scale digesters was calculated using a heat balance. This study shows that it is possible to reduce the heat demand for AD in real applications without compromising the biogas production and process stability.
