    • The copolymeric structure of dermatan sulfate chains synthesized by skin fibroblasts has been examined. Chains initiated onto exogeneous p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside or attached to protein in a large proteoglycan, PG-L, and two small proteoglycans, PG-S1 and PG-S2, have been compared by using high resolution electrophoresis and gel chromatography of oligosaccharides generated by specific enzymatic or chemical degradations. The results confirm that chains attached to PG-L are glucuronate-rich, whereas novel findings indicate that chains attached to either of the two PG-S variants yield closely similar oligosaccharide maps, have approximately equal glucuronate and iduronate content and contain over 90% 4-sulfated disaccharide repeating units. Dermatan sulfate chains built onto xyloside at concentrations of 50 microM and below have a copolymeric structure similar to that of chains from the two PG-S variants. These findings indicate that the polymer-modifying machinery can generate chains with extended iduronate-containing repeats also when the xylose primer is not linked to core protein.

    • We present two approaches to the Amharic - English bilingual track in CLEF 2004. Both experiments use a dictionary based approach to translate the Amharic queries into English Bags-of-words, but while one approach removes non-content bearing words from the Amharic queries based on their IDF value, the other uses a list of English stop words to perform the same task. The resulting translated (English) terms are then submitted to a retrieval engine that supports the Boolean and vector-space models. In our experiments, the second approach (based on a list of English stop words) performs slightly better than the one based on IDF values for the Amharic terms.

    • We present four approaches to the Amharic - French bilingual track at CLEF 2005. All experiments use a dictionary based approach to translate the Amharic queries into French Bags-of-words, but while one approach uses word sense discrimination on the translated side of the queries, the other one includes all senses of a translated word in the query for searching. We used two search engines: The SICS experimental engine and Lucene, hence four runs with the two approaches. Non-content bearing words were removed both before and after the dictionary lookup. TF/IDF values supplemented by a heuristic function was used to remove the stop words from the Amharic queries and two French stopwords lists were used to remove them from the French translations. In our experiments, we found that the SICS search engine performs better than Lucene and that using the word sense discriminated keywords produce a slightly better result than the full set of non discriminated keywords.

    • An injury to the axillary nerve from a shoulder trauma can easily be overlooked. Spontaneous functional recovery may occur, but occasionally reconstructive surgery is required. The time frame for nerve reconstruction procedures is from a neurobiological view crucial for a good functional outcome. This study presents a group of operatively and non-operatively treated young adults with axillary nerve injuries caused by motorcycle accidents, where the diagnosis was set late. Ten young men (median age at trauma 13 years, range 9-24) with an axillary nerve injury were diagnosed by examination of shoulder function and electromyography (EMG). The patients had either a nerve reconstruction procedure or were treated conservatively and their recovery was monitored. The axillary nerve was explored and reconstructed at a median of 8 months (range 1-22 months) after trauma in 8/10 patients. Two patients were treated non-operatively. In 4/8 cases, a reconstruction with sural nerve graft was performed and in 1/8 case only exploration of the nerve was made (minor neuroma). In 3/8 cases a radial nerve branch transfer to the axillary nerve was chosen as the procedure. The shoulder was mobilised after 3 weeks with physiotherapy and the patients were monitored regularly. Functional recovery was observed in 9/10 cases (median follow up 11 months, range 7-64) with EMG signs of reinnervation in seven patients. Axillary nerve function should not be overlooked in young patients with a minor shoulder trauma. Nerve reconstruction can successfully recreate function.
