  • Communicating Female Voicelessness : A Feminist-Narratological Study of Pak Wansô's Short Stories from the 1970s
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Communicating Female Voicelessness. A Feminist-Narratological Study of Pak Wansô’s Short Stories from the 1970s.This study focuses on seven short stories written by the South Korean author Pak Wansô (1931-2011) in the 1970s. Pak was one of the most established contemporary female authors in South Korea. Not only did she describe her painful experiences of the Korean War, she accurately depicted a country experiencing major socio-economic and cultural transformation and how that affected the lives of middle-class women. When Pak made her literary debut in the 1970s, she was one of the very few female writers in a male-dominated literary scene. Pak had to find ways to legitimise her right as a woman, a social group that had been marginalised and was almost absent in public debate, to be heard and make her depiction of women’s experiences and interests important. For the analysis of Pak’s short stories from the 1970s, a feminist-narratological approach, inspired by the American theorist Susan Sniader Lanser, has been chosen. Feminist-narratology was a part of the reconceptualisation of narratology which occurred in the 1980s, recognising the connection between gender of the author/narrator and narrative form. In order for an author or a text to gain authority it must respond to different types of audiences, readers, social norms and aesthetical values and power relations within the cultural sphere. Thus, when studying the narrative voice or the point of view in a text one has to consider that it not only carries a certain message but the narrative technique itself is an expression of ideology.                   The study demonstrates that one essential component in Pak’s stories is the use of a homodiegetic narrator, and the stories are focalised through the female protagonist. The narrator/main character is telling her own story, so she has the possibility to analyse and reflect on her experiences. When it comes to women’s roles as authors and narrators, the issue of absence is also important. Authority can be given to a particular point of view by repetition and emphasizing a single character’s stance. To gain authority can be a subversive act by a female author/narrator in a context where women, due to their subordinate position, have been marginalised and silenced. By focusing on strategies addressing the narrator and by highlighting certain narratological devices, the study argues that Pak communicates the narrator’s point of view and the story’s ideology through narrative technique.

  • A Struggle for the Realm : Late-medieval Swedish rhyme chronicles as ideological expressions
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The period from the mid-fifteenth century to the early sixteenth century was characterised by recurrent political turmoil and conflict in Scandinavia in general, and in Sweden in particular. Political power was contested, not least because of the disputed conditions on which the Swedish realm should be governed as part of the Scandinavian union monarchy. Contenders for power based their claims on support from various factions of the ecclesiastical and secular aristocracy. Other groups within the realm played a crucial role as allies, supporters or armed levies. In A Struggle for the Realm, Margaretha Nordquist examines the late-medieval Swedish rhyme chronicles Sturekrönikan (c. 1496–1497) and Cronica Swecie (c. 1520–1523) as ideological responses to contemporary conflicts of power. The rhyme chronicles describe some of the key events and actors in the period, in ways that both differ and overlap. As partisan narratives written in support of particular political factions, the rhyme chronicles can be seen as verbal contributions in a struggle for the realm. Nordquist's analysis shows that the realm functioned as a fundamental ideological construct in the chronicles. The realm and the Swedish community were key mobilising elements in the efforts to legitimate and consolidate certain positions of power, but the precise meaning and implications of the Swedish realm and the Swedish community were not fixed. The community of Swedes is primarily envisioned as a political and social entity, although the common, ancient origin of the people is an important element in Cronica Swecie. The concept of regnal ideology is used to describe the creation of ideological meaning in the rhyme chronicles. While the realm possesses substantial ideological validity in both chronicles, they differ in the particular configuration of power they advocate as a basis for the government of the realm.

  • Tre romantiska berättelser : Studier i Eyvind Johnsons Romantisk berättelse och Tidens gång, Lars Gustafssons Poeten Brumbergs sista dagar och död och Sven Delblancs Kastrater
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation explores the notion 'romantic story' as a literary device in three Swedish late modernist novels: Eyvind Johnson's Romantisk berättelse (1953) (Romantic Story) and Tidens gång. En romantisk berättelse (1955) (The Passage of Time. A Romantic Story), Lars Gustafsson's Poeten Brumbergs sista dagar och död. En romantisk berättelse (1959) (The Last Days and Death of the Poet Brumberg. A Romantic Story), and Sven Delblanc's Kastrater. En romantisk berättelse (1975) (Castrati. A Romantic Story). The study consists of three parts, one on each novel. In part, the dissertation turns around the word 'romantic' and the historical period designated by this name; and addresses the topic of what the term has come to mean in a period of late modernist aesthetics. In part, it is an investigation of the three novels as 'romantic stories', i.e. a study of the generic properties of the novels, and also of the novel as a literary genre. By the very nature of the study the approach is ecclectic, encompassing interests in paratextuality (chapters 2, 5, 10), narratology (chapter 3), autobiography (chapter 4), hypertextuality and intertextuality (chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12), literary form (chapter 9), literary genres (chapter 10), as well as the relation between the literary work and the historical and cultural context that it is possible to construct around it (chapters 4, 6, 12, 13). However, the focus of the study always remains on the texts and how they work, making use of close reading as a strategic means of teasing out meaning and reference. The dissertation concludes with a chapter in which the three novels are looked at as group and from the point of view of the internal histor(icit)y of Modernism.

  • Själens medium : Skrift och subjekt i Nordeuropa omkring 1500
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The era of the digital revolution has made it possible to acknowledge literature as a technological object, inseparable from its medium. This study attempts to outline the prerequisites of a material history of literature that does not focus primarily upon works or authors but rather on the media itself, the mnemotechnics and the practices of reading and writing that make such phenomena possible in the first place. More precisely, the thesis explores the historical process in which writing and its practices became a precondition for new forms of subjectivity that evolved around the turn of the sixteenth century in Northern Europe. The overall aim of the investigation is however not to analyze this process per se, but to offer a new perspective on how literature as we know it arises out of the media revolution of the fifteenth century.  By implication, the dissertation may be described as a genealogy of literature through the paradigm of technology. The study considers discursive practices – from elementary alphabetization to phantasmatic reading – and the way they contributed to the circulation of discourse in conjunction with the breakthrough of the print medium. Taken together, these elements are analyzed in terms of a discourse network – i.e. a network of technologies and institutions that allow a given culture to select, store, and process relevant data. The concept of a discourse network allows for an analysis that is receptive to the importance of technology and subjectivity as historically variable phenomena that may serve different functions: as source, as emitter, as channel, and as receiver of information. The analysis reveals seemingly timeless concepts like the author or the alleged transparency of the medium of writing as historical effects of the network. Further, it traces the powerful impetus of the notion of universal literacy to the rise of the state in the sixteenth century. Finally, it reveals literature as we know it as a product of displaced or alien powers of the past.

  • Ecologies of the Imagination : Theorizing the participatory aesthetics of the fantastic
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is about the participatory aesthetics of the fantastic. In it, the author argues that the definition of the fantastic presented by Tzvetan Todorov in 1970 can be used, provided it is first adapted to a media-ecological framework, to theorize the role of aesthetic participation in the creation of secondary worlds. Working within a hermeneutical tradition, Todorov understands reader participation as interpretation, in which the creative ambiguities of the literary object are primarily epistemological. However, it is here argued that the aesthetic object of the fantastic is also characterized by material ambiguity. The purpose of this dissertation is then to present a conceptual framework with which to theorize the relation between the material and the epistemological ambiguity of the fantastic. It is argued that such a framework can be found in an ecological understanding of aesthetic participation. This, in turn, entails understanding human subjectivity as a process always already embodied in a material environment. To this extent, the proposed theoretical framework questions the clear and oppositional distinction between form and matter, as well as that between mind and body, nature and culture, and human and non-human, on which a modern and humanist notion of subjectivity is based. And in this sense, the basic ecological assumptions of this dissertation are posthumanist, or non-humanist. From this position, it is argued that an ecological understanding of participation offers a means to reformulate the function of a number of concepts central to studying the aesthetics of the fantastic, most notably the concepts of media, genre and text. As the fantastic focuses on the creation of other worlds, it is an aesthetics of coming into being, of ontogenesis. Accordingly, it will be argued that the participatory aesthetics of the fantastic operationalizes the ontogenesis of media, genres and texts.By mapping the ontogenesis of three distinct media ecologies – the media ecology of fantasy and J. R. R. Tolkien’s secondary world Middle-earth; the media ecology of the American comic book superhero Miracleman; and the media ecology of William Blake – this book argues that the ecological imagination generates world.Per Israelson has been a doctoral candidate in the Research School of Studies in Cultural History at the department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University. Ecologies of the Imagination is his dissertation.

  • Till det omöjligas konst bekänner jag mig, Gunnar Ekelöfs konstsyn : Relationen mellan litteratur och bildkonst i kommenterande texter och lyrisk praktik
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis, “To the art of the impossible I profess myself” Gunnar Ekelöf’s View of the Fine Arts. The Relationship between Literature and the Visual Arts in Commenting Texts and Lyrical Practice, looks into Ekelöf’s view of the fine arts in commenting texts such as literary and art criticism, essays, notebooks and letters. It also analyses his lyrical practice, utilizing close-reading and comparison as essential methods, with attention focused on the relationship between literature and the visual arts, named the interartial dimension. As a result of my investigation I can assert that his view of the fine arts is interartial. Furthermore I establish the fact that there are a large number of Gunnar Ekelöf’s poems that can be characterized as interartial, which means that there is a relation in the poems to other forms of art. My thesis elucidates primarily four poems: “Triptych”, “Samothrace”, “Laokoon” and “Joachim and Anna”. Five specific dimensions are uncovered, a concept being used to demarcate the different spheres of problems that are being investigated: above all the interartial and the metapoetical dimension, but also the gender aspect, as well as the dialogical dimension. Besides I discuss the mythological dimension. In all of the analysed poems an interartial dimension is to be found. But this relation does not automatically make the poem ekphrastic. For this denomination to be valid, both description and interpretation of the work of art the poem is inspired by must be involved. In only one of the four analysed poems this is the case. The other three poems I prefer to label iconotexts, a term suggested by Peter Wagner, because of their looser relations to different works of art. An important result of my research is the finding that there is a close link between the interartial and the metapoetical dimension, as well as the gender perspective. I also emphasize the aspect of reception.

  • Den didaktiska fiktionen : Konstruktion av förebilder ur ett barn- och ungdomslitterärt perspektiv 1400–1750
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates the construction of role models, more specifically literary didactics and constructions of subject positions, in literary works with exemplary stories in Swedish 1400–1750, from the perspective of literature for children and young adults.Childhood concepts, didactic concepts and subject positions presented to the reader are analyzed from the point of view of dominance and dissonance between different characters and messages. A number of themes have been chosen for a comparative study, for example: ideas about identification, the construction of subject positions and ideals for girls, the responsibility of adults, subversive tendencies, obedience or autonomy, the immoral role model as exemplary, conflicts between different childhood concepts, adults and children as role models.A central conclusion is that there is variation when it comes to the subject positions that are constructed for children and young adults, mainly through role models. There are examples of authoritative teachings that demands the subordination and obedience of the reader/recipient, as well as encouragement of questioning and even contra conventional subject positions. One conclusion is that premodern literature for the young does not just have an authoritative tone towards the reader, but the texts also negotiates with the reader. The messages are not just about obedience and religious fidelity, but also about learning, questioning and personal, moral responsibility. A critical perspective on adults is encouraged through critizism of adults and exemplary role models. Subject positions for girls also vary in the texts. Some texts convey conventional, passive gender roles while others present active subject positions, where chastity, wisdom and manliness are presented as ideal virtues for girls.

  • The Metamorphoses of Education : Ovid in the Twelfth-Century Schoolroom
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to explore the earliest known commentary on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, extant in the manuscript clm 4610, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and thus to shed some light on the early reception on the Metamorphoses.Ovid’s Metamorphoses is today one of the most well-known works of literature from ancient Rome. This, however, has not always been the case. Ovid came upon the medieval literary scene surprisingly late compared to many of the other ancient authors. From the period before 1100 the Metamorphoses is preserved in only a handful of manuscripts. In addition to the manuscripts transmitting the text itself two commentaries on the work dated to around 1100 are extant. These commentaries, which seem to have been produced in the monastic environment in Bavaria, are the earliest witnesses to the reception of the Metamorphoses during the middle ages. These commentaries are, as far as we know, the first in burgeoning trend of commenting on the Metamorphoses. From the late twelfth century onwards there appear an increasing amount of commentaries on the work, which have received some attention in the scholarly world. These earliest witnesses, however, have in large been neglected. The core of this thesis is found in part II. It consists of an edition and translation of the previously unedited commentary in the manuscript clm 4610. Part I serves the function of contextualising and analysing the edited text. The first chapter, Ovid Enters the Scene, discusses the resurgent popularity of the Metamorphoses around year 1100. The following chapter, Situating the Commentary, contextualises the commentary in clm 4610 with regard to the commentary context, the school context and the Bavarian context. After this, different aspects of the form and function of the commentary are analysed in the chapter Form and Function. The final chapter of Part I consists of Three case studies that further investigate the relationship between clm 4610 and other commentary texts.

  • Cultural Techniques of Presence : Luis de Góngora and Early Modern Media
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation investigates the materiality of Early Modern Spanish poetry and particularly that of Luis de Góngora (1561-1627). Its purpose is to focus on physical and concrete aspects in order to create new knowledge of the past. In understanding the poetry of Góngora as a conceptual object resulting from the ontic operations of cultural techniques, it tries to show how these cultural phenomena were deeply embedded in various spheres held separate by modern institutions. The dissertation shows how the material existence of the poetry associated with the name “Góngora” was far from stable. This today canonic authorship was dispersed throughout a network and no accepted form of material storage of the ephemeral poetic discourse ever existed to his contemporaries. The poetry of Góngora and several other contemporary poets was never printed during their lifetime but existed materially in the various manuscripts produced by different actors. The years after the death of the poet saw the competing attempts to create the final storage of this important cultural memory, but over and over again the attempts were described as frustrated and unreliable. The project of printing the poetry of Góngora can be described as an attempt at stabilizing the unstable, storing the ephemeral in the durable, centralize the decentralized. The need for a “correct” edition reveals an emerging but not yet established notion of authorship that produces a conflict between practices and demands. Author portraits, biographies and euologic verses as well as the codex itself can be understood as attempts of stabilizing and constituting the human subject as a recognizable author of certain pieces of writing. The absence of authoritative and widely disseminated books has further implications for the poetry itself. The dispersed nature of the poetical manuscripts, which presupposed contact with the producer, was mirrored by the dispersed nature of the material and physical referents of the poems. The majority of them were created in a historically specific time and place, with a more or less clear purpose, often pointing with a deictic gesture towards material objects. This dissertation reconstructs and analyzes such material and physical settings by letting the poetry act as informant and juxtaposes it with other historical sources. In this way, it understands the poems not as conceptual objects emanating from the soul of a unified human subject, but as material traces of physical presence.A recurring tendency of this poetry was the employment of concepts and topoi to describe the material components of a given object. In this manner, they reveal a conception of portraits and monuments as objects of storage with the ability to produce effects of presence. Not only do the poetry describe such effects, but they often also direct the attention to how they are produced through a specific employment of materials and techniques. This reversal of the order of things is precisely what motivates the study of cultural techniques of presence in this dissertation.

  • Poesins drottning : Christina av Sverige och de italienska akademierna
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present dissertation treats the position of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) in Italian literature during the second half of the 17th century. The investigation centres primarily on two aspects: her role as art patron and her appearance as a literary figure in Arcadian literature. Queen Christina’s participation in the Italian literary debate of the time is studied in relation to her creation of Accademia Reale (1674), which had a major importance in the establishment of an Arcadian poetics based on clarity and decorum. This poetics was later to be sanctioned after her death with the foundation of Accademia dell’Arcadia (1690). Her support of some of the chief representatives of this new tendency, polemically in contrast to the baroque poetry of the marinisti, is treated in the first part of the thesis, ‘Queen Christina, Patron and Reformer of Italian Poetry’. The second part ‘Queen Christina in Arcadian Literature’ is focused on the image of the Queen and studies the way in which classical exempla are used by the poets pertaining to her circle to illustrate how she surpasses all ancient and modern heroes by means of her Catholic faith. The investigation of the different sources concerning Christina’s Academy (primarily academic speeches and poetry) makes evident the public character of the institution. Queen Christina’s academic project appears in fact as closely related to her claim of royal status even after her abdication and subsequent conversion to Catholicism.
