  • The Laser calibration of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter during the LHC run 1
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes the Laser calibration system of the ATLAS hadronic Tile Calorimeter that has been used during the run 1 of the LHC. First, the stability of the system associated readout electronics is studied. It is found to be stable with variations smaller than 0.6 %. Then, the method developed to compute the calibration constants, to correct for the variations of the gain of the calorimeter photomultipliers, is described. These constants were determined with a statistical uncertainty of 0.3 % and a systematic uncertainty of 0.2 % for the central part of the calorimeter and 0.5 % for the end-caps. Finally, the detection and correction of timing mis-configuration of the Tile Calorimeter using the Laser system are also presented.

  • Pulse wave velocity distribution in a cohort study: from arterial stiffness to early vascular aging.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hypertension. - 1473-5598. ; 33:7, s. 1438-1445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By contrast with other southern European people, north Portuguese population registers an especially high prevalence of hypertension and stroke incidence. We designed a cohort study to identify individuals presenting accelerated and premature arterial aging in the Portuguese population.

  • Ultrathin CIGS Solar Cells with Passivated and Highly Reflective Back Contacts – : Results from the ARCIGS-M Consortium
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 36th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition. ; , s. 597-600
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this work, we report results from the EU-funded project ARCIGS-M. The project started in 2016 and aims to reduce the use of indium and gallium by enabling the use of very thin Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) layers while retaining high efficiency and developing innovative low-cost steel substrates as alternatives to glass. In the project, reflective layers containing TCO´s and silver have successfully been used to enhance the reflective properties of the rear contact. In addition, passivation layers based on alumina (Al2O3) deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been found to yield good passivation of the rear contact. Since the alumina layers are dielectric, perforation of these layers is necessary to provide adequate contacting. The design of the perforation patterns has been investigated by a combination of modeling and experimental verification by electron beam lithography. In parallel a nano-imprint lithography (NIL) process is further developed for scale-up and application in prototype modules. Advanced optoelectrical characterization supported by modeling is used to fill in the missing gaps in optical and electrical properties, regarding CIGS, interfaces and back contact materials.

  • Measuring quality of life of patients with axial spondyloarthritis for economic evaluation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: RMD Open. - : BMJ. - 2056-5933. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives To estimate the relationship between EQ5D (three levels, UK version) and the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS) for use in the economic evaluation of health technologies for people with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). To compare against the relationship with the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI). Methods An electronic, prospective, Portuguese, nationwide, rheumatic disease register (Reuma.pt) provided data on 1140 patients (5483 observations) with a confirmed diagnosis of axSpA. We estimated models of EQ5D as a function of ASDAS, alone or in combination with measures of functional impairment, using bespoke mixture models which reflect the complex distributional features of EQ5D. The SPondyloArthritis Caught Early cohort provided data from 344 patients (1405 observations) in four European countries and was used for validation. A previously published model of BASDAI/Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) was also used to generate predicted EQ5D scores and model performance compared. Results A non-linear relationship exists between EQ5D from ASDAS. The final model included ASDAS, ASDAS squared, age and age squared and demonstrated close fit in both datasets except where data were sparse for patients with very high levels of disease activity (ASDAS >4). This finding held in the validation dataset. Models that included BASFI improved model fit. The ASDAS based models fit the data marginally less well than models using BASDAI. Conclusions Mapping models linking ASDAS to EQ5D allow results from clinical studies to be used in economic evaluation of health technologies with confidence. There is some loss of information compared with BASDAI but this has only a marginal impact.

  • Clusters of risk factors in metabolic syndrome and their influence on central blood pressure in a global study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and clusters of its components on central blood pressure (CBP) has not been well characterized. We aimed to describe the effect of MetS and clusters of its components on CBP in a large population and to identify whether this effect differs in men and women. We studied 15,609 volunteers (43% women) from 10 cohorts worldwide who participated in the Metabolic syndrome and Artery REsearch Consortium. MetS was defined according to the NCEP-ATP III criteria (GHTBW, glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure, waist circumference). CBP was measured noninvasively and acquired from pulse wave analysis by applanation tonometry. MetS was associated with a 50% greater odds of having higher CSBP. After controlling for age, male sex, non HDL cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, and mean arterial pressure, only specific clusters of MetS components were associated with a higher CSBP; and some of them were significant in women but not in men. We identified “risky clusters” of MetS variables associated with high CSBP. Future studies are needed to confirm they identify subjects at high risk of accelerated arterial aging and, thus, need more intensive clinical management.

  • A Lower Cretaceous palynoflora from Carregueira (Lusitanian Basin, westernmost Iberia): taxonomic, stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental implications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cretaceous research (Print). - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0195-6671 .- 1095-998X. ; 130, s. 105036-105036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we describe a new Lower Cretaceous palynoflora from the Lusitanian Basin, located in the westernmost sector of the Iberian Peninsula. The spore-pollen assemblage was extracted from samples collected in the Carregueira clay pit complex, located near the village of Juncal, western Portugal, from sedimentary deposits belonging to the Figueira da Foz Formation. A rich and well-preserved palynoflora, typical of non-marine fluvial environments, was recovered. Fifty-eight species and morphological groups of palynomorphs in 43 genera were recognized. The palynoflora is dominated by fern spores and conifer pollen. Angiosperm pollen is scarce and mainly represented by Afropollis, Clavatipollenites, Stellatopollis and Senectotetradites. Comparisons with described marine sections in Portugal suggest that the fossil horizon is lower Albian, corresponding to a hiatus between Zone I and Zone II in the Potomac Group of the eastern USA. The same beds contain a mesofossil flora dominated by angiosperm seeds, fruits and flowers. A similar contrast in the relative abundance of angiosperm mesofossils and pollen is seen at other Portuguese localities but is not evident in the Potomac Group. The palynoflora and the sedimentological data suggest deposition in wet lowland environments in a moderately humid regional setting.
