  • Users’ experience of a virtual reality architectural model compared with users’ experience of the completed building
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st international conference on advanced research in virtual and rapid prototyping. ; , s. 363-370, s. 363-370
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigated how the employees of a company experienced a VR-model of an office building that was to be their future work place and how that VR-experience com¬pared with the employees’ experience of the completed building. About two years after the VR-showings the building was completed and the staff had moved into the building. The results for the employees who saw the VR-presentation for the Semantic environment de¬scrip¬tion scale (SMB) comparing the experiences of the VR-model with the experiences of the completed real building suggested that the experience of the VR-model gave a fairly accurate representation of the experience of the real building However, the reactions to the VR-model were more appreciative after the VR-show as compared with when the VR-model was compared with the real building.

  • Biomarkers for dementia in Latin American countries: Gaps and opportunities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alzheimers & Dementia. - : Wiley. - 1552-5260 .- 1552-5279. ; 19:2, s. 721-735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Limited knowledge on dementia biomarkers in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries remains a serious barrier. Here, we reported a survey to explore the ongoing work, needs, interests, potential barriers, and opportunities for future studies related to biomarkers. The results show that neuroimaging is the most used biomarker (73%), followed by genetic studies (40%), peripheral fluids biomarkers (31%), and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers (29%). Regarding barriers in LAC, lack of funding appears to undermine the implementation of biomarkers in clinical or research settings, followed by insufficient infrastructure and training. The survey revealed that despite the above barriers, the region holds a great potential to advance dementia biomarkers research. Considering the unique contributions that LAC could make to this growing field, we highlight the urgent need to expand biomarker research. These insights allowed us to propose an action plan that addresses the recommendations for a biomarker framework recently proposed by regional experts.

  • Information, perceptions, and electoral behaviour of young voters: A randomised controlled experiment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Electoral Studies. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1873-6890 .- 0261-3794. ; 84:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The way people absorb and process politically relevant information is central to their subsequent political behaviour (in terms of turnout and vote choice). Nonetheless, little is known about how young voters – who might be more impressionable than more experienced voters – respond to the provision of such information. In this article, we design a between-subject randomised controlled trial that exposes a sample of university students to positive, neutral or negative information about central government performance before the 2017 Portuguese local elections. We find that young voters update their perceptions more when exposed to negative news. This negativity bias is stronger for first-time voters. We also find that negative information significantly affects turnout of initially undecided young voters. Our results imply that sensitivity to information is heterogeneous and that some young voters may be prone to manipulation through the provision of negative news.

  • High-Speed Video Observation of a Dart Leader Producing X-rays
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 124:12, s. 10564-10570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents the first simultaneous X-ray measurement and high-speed video observation of the propagation of a lightning leader producing X-rays. As a result, the three-dimensional leader distance from the X-ray measurement and, for the first time, the conditions of the preexisting channel during the leader propagation were observed. Although four leaders in this seven-stroke flash followed the same path to ground, X-rays were only observed during the leader before the return stroke with the highest peak current. The fact that the other three leaders following the same path to ground did not produce detectable X-rays confirms the hypothesis that leader line charge density is an important factor that determines X-ray production. The fact that X-rays was recorded only when the leader tip was at a certain portion of the lightning channel confirms that the orientation of the leader plays an important role in the detection of X-rays.

  • Modelling of normal and premalignant oral tissue by using the immortalised cell line, SVpgC2a: a review of the value of the model
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Alternatives to laboratory animals : ATLA. - : SAGE Publications. - 0261-1929 .- 2632-3559. ; 32:4, s. 401-405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Normal oral keratinocytes (NOKs), and a Simian virus 40 T-antigen-immortalised oral keratinocyte line termed SVpgC2a, were cultured in an effort to model the human oral epithelium in vitro, including normal and dysplastic tissue. Monolayer and organotypic cultures of NOKs and SVpgC2a were successfully established in a standardised serum-free medium with high levels of amino acids, by using regular tissue culture plastic for monolayers and collagen gels containing oral fibroblasts as the base for generating tissue equivalents. NOKs express many characteristics of normal tissue, including those associated with terminal squamous differentiation. After > 150 passages, SVpgC2a cells retained an immortal, non-tumourigenic phenotype that, relative to NOKs, was associated with aberrant morphology, enhanced proliferation, deficiency in terminal differentiation, proneness to apoptosis, and variably altered expression of structural epithelial markers. Transcript and protein profiling, as well as activity assays, demonstrated the expression of multiple xenobiotic-metabolising enzymes in SVpgC2a cells, some of which were higher in comparison to NOKs. A generally preserved, or even activated, ability for xenobiotic metabolism in long-term cultures of SVpgC2a cells indicated that this cell line could be useful in safety testing protocols — for example, in the development of consumer products in the oral health care field. However, SVpgC2a cells displayed some features reminiscent of a severe oral dysplasia, implying that this cell line could also to some extent serve as a model of a premalignant oral epithelium.
