  • Gaia Data Release 1 : Open cluster astrometry: Performance, limitations, and future prospects
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. The first Gaia Data Release contains the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). This is a subset of about 2 million stars for which, besides the position and photometry, the proper motion and parallax are calculated using Hipparcos and Tycho-2 positions in 1991.25 as prior information. Aims. We investigate the scientific potential and limitations of the TGAS component by means of the astrometric data for open clusters. Methods. Mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are derived taking into account the error correlations within the astrometric solutions for individual stars, an estimate of the internal velocity dispersion in the cluster, and, where relevant, the effects of the depth of the cluster along the line of sight. Internal consistency of the TGAS data is assessed. Results. Values given for standard uncertainties are still inaccurate and may lead to unrealistic unit-weight standard deviations of least squares solutions for cluster parameters. Reconstructed mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are generally in very good agreement with earlier Hipparcos-based determination, although the Gaia mean parallax for the Pleiades is a significant exception. We have no current explanation for that discrepancy. Most clusters are observed to extend to nearly 15 pc from the cluster centre, and it will be up to future Gaia releases to establish whether those potential cluster-member stars are still dynamically bound to the clusters. Conclusions. The Gaia DR1 provides the means to examine open clusters far beyond their more easily visible cores, and can provide membership assessments based on proper motions and parallaxes. A combined HR diagram shows the same features as observed before using the Hipparcos data, with clearly increased luminosities for older A and F dwarfs.

  • Characterization of the NIST Seaweed Standard Reference Material
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Radiation and Isotopes. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-8043. ; 64:10-11, s. 1242-1247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Material (SRM) for seaweed was developed through an interlaboratory comparison with 24 participants from 16 countries. After evaluating different techniques to calculate certified values for the radionuclides, the median method was found to be the most representative technique. The certified values were provided for 13 radionuclides and information values were given for 15 more radionuclides. Results for the natural decay series showed disequilibrium in both the uranium and thorium series. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Distribution and flux of Pu-238, Pu-239,Pu-240, Am-241, Cs-137 and Pb-210 to high arctic lakes in the Thule district (Greenland)
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Radioactivity. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1700 .- 0265-931X. ; 75:3, s. 285-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental samples (soil, sediment and lake water) in the Thule area (NW Greenland) have been studied to assess the contamination of radionuclides originating from a nuclear weapons accident (the Thule accident in 1968). Four lakes were chosen at different distances from the point of impact with the Thule air base community situated in between. The sedimentation rates in the lakes varied from 0.4 mm a(-1) (5 a a(-1) to 1.6 mm a(-1) (82 mg cm(-2) a(-1)). With these sedimentation rates, it is not possible to resolve the Pu-239,Pu-240 global fallout peak from a possible Pu-239,Pu-240 "accident" peak in the sediment depth profiles. However, the Pu-239,Pu-240/Cs-137 and the Pu-238/Pu-239,Pu-240 ratios agreed well with global fallout ratios, indicating that plutonium originating from the accident had not reached these lakes. This also indicates that the Thule air base community has probably only been exposed to radionuclides from the accident to a very limited extent. A limited study showed that Pb-210 could not be used as a normalizing nuclide to explain the transport of transuranic elements from the catchment area to the lake, i.e. Pb-210 has a different transport mechanism from that of the transuranic elements studied in this investigation.

  • Plutonium and americium in arctic waters, the North Sea and Scottish and Irish coastal zones
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Radioactivity. - 0265-931X. ; 4:1, s. 11-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plutonium and americium have been measured in surface waters of the Greenland and Barents Seas and in the northern North Sea from 1980 through 1984. Measurements in water and biota, Fucus, Mytilus and Patella, were carried out in North-English and Scottish waters in 1982 and Fucus samples were collected from the Irish coast in 1983. Fallout is found to dominate as a source of 239+240Pu north of latitude 65°N, while for 238Pu a substantial fraction originates from European nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. The 238Pu/239+240Pu isotope ratio provides clear evidence of the transport of effluent plutonium from the latter to Spitsbergen waters. Fallout plutonium in Arctic waters has a residence time of the order of several years, while for Pu from Sellafield we estimate mean residence times of 11-15 months in Scottish waters and, tentatively, 1·5-3 y during transport from the North Channel (north of the Irish Sea) to Spitsbergen. 241Am found in Arctic waters probably originates from the decay of fallout 241Pu and, like Pu, tentatively has a residence time of the order of several years. Americium from Sellafield has an estimated mean residence time of 4-6 months in Scottish waters.

  • Climate for improvement and the effects on performance in Swedish healthcare - A survey in the County Council of Östergötland
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-3363 .- 1478-3371. ; 15:7, s. 909-924
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the climate for improvement in Swedish healthcare is explored via a self-assessment model. The result from a cross-sectional survey at the clinical department level in the County Council of Östergötland is presented and discussed. The underlying theoretical model consists of three parts, first a Leadership Profile Model that contains eight leadership styles. The second part concerns organizational settings based on the European model for Excellence and the Swedish Quality award model The last part is organizational performance measured as customer and employee satisfaction. A questionnaire that covers leadership and climate for improvement has been designed and distributed to leaders at three hospitals and the Medical Laboratory units in the County Council of Östergötland. Significant positive correlations have been identified between the climate for improvement, and patient as well as employee satisfaction. These results state that clinical departments that work systematically with quality improvements have more satisfied employees and patients. The characteristics of clinical departments with a suitable climate for improvement are a focus on processes and patient involvement.

  • Leadership for improvements in Swedish health care
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-3363 .- 1478-3371. ; 15:4, s. 495-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, leadership in a professional and complex organization is explored via a leadership model. The Swedish Health Care System is used as the context for the suggested Leadership profile model. The Leadership profile model contains eight leadership styles that characterize different aspects of leadership. A leadership profile dominated by the leadership styles the Captain, the Strategic leader and the Team Builder characterizes leadership in the studied organizations. The result is different in comparison with results from earlier studies in private organizations. The results also indicate uniformity in leadership in the health care in Sweden with small variations between individual leaders. The leadership profile is similar for different working places, leadership levels and gender. The subordinates' assessment of their leaders indicates the same leadership profile shape, however, with a significant difference in magnitude. A leadership dominated by the leadership styles of The Captain, The Strategic Leader and the Team Builder, indicates an effective leadership.

  • Engineering Emotional Values in Product Design : Kansei Engineering in Development
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Feelings and impressions of a product are important for the decision of purchasing it or not. Designing attractive products therefore requires knowledge about the feelings and impressions the products evoke on the customer and the user. Integrating such affective values in product design requires the introduction of suitable methods into companies’ product design processes, methods which can capture and convert subjective and even unconscious feelings about a product into concrete design parameters. This is sometimes referred to as ‘Affective Engineering’. One methodology in this context is Kansei Engineering, which has been developed in Japan in order to design feelings into products. The aim of this thesis was twofold: Firstly, to improve understanding of the nature of products making emotional impact on the users and customers. Secondly, to identify and improve methods capable of grasping those affective values and translating them into concrete product design solutions. This thesis presents three empirical studies and two methodological papers, relating to warehouse trucks and laminate flooring. The first study was made on user impact of warehouse trucks in three different European countries. A second study dealt with affective values of rocker-switches in work vehicles, such as warehouse trucks. A third study on this truck type compared the old manoeuvring panel evaluated in the previous studies with a newly introduced manoeuvring panel in order to validate the impact of the design improvements made after the first study. Further, a conceptual model on Kansei Engineering methodology was proposed in a methods paper based on the experience from the studies performed in order to provide a structure for performing Kansei Engineering studies. The fifth paper had the purpose of validating and improving the proposed model using laminate flooring as research object. More structured ways of identifying design parameters and relevant product properties was given high priority in the improvement work of the methodology. A model for spanning the Space of Product Properties was presented and applied. This thesis also deals with other improvement areas in the methodology and proposed new developments, including the use of scales, experimental design and validation methods. In conclusion, Kansei Engineering is a concept and a methodology in strong development, a framework in which tools and methods are continuously developed, added and integrated.
