  • Grading systems, features of assessment and students' approaches to learning
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Teaching in Higher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1356-2517 .- 1470-1294. ; 14:2, s. 185-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Bologna process aims at harmonising the higher education systems in the Europe. One of the most important tools proposed for such a purpose is the European Credit Transfer System. A significant element of this system is a common seven-step grading scale. It has previously been shown that assessment characteristics impact on students' approaches to learning. Furthermore, there is also empirical evidence that judgement criteria have an effect on students' learning. The focus of this article is on the relationships between grading systems, assessment characteristics and students' learning. Empirical evidence from a Swedish survey study indicates that multi-step grading scales may have detrimental repercussions on the nature of the assessment tasks and thereby indirectly on the students' approaches to learning. We suggest that the effects of grading systems need to be considered in the current discussion in order to support quality in learning.

  • Physiotherapists in Balint Group Training.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Research International. - : Wiley. - 1358-2267 .- 1471-2865. ; 5:2, s. 85-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and PurposeBalint group training (BGT) is a method widely used for enhancing understanding of the relationship and communication between health professionals and their patients. Participants meet in small groups, on a regular basis, with a tutor to discuss their experiences of problem cases. The method was originally developed in the 1950s for enhancing understanding of the doctor-patient relationship. Few studies have focused on BGT and physiotherapists. The aim of the present study was to describe and analyse physiotherapists' experiences of participation in BGT as a means of learning and understanding the physiotherapist-patient relationship.MethodSemi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with three physiotherapists working in private practice, all participating in BGT. The intervews were transcribed and subjected to a qualitative analysis.ResultsThe results are presented in a sequential model, featuring eight themes in which the physiotherapists' experiences of the training process are portrayed.ConclusionsThe results suggest that BGT and sharing the experiences of others may be considered a way of enhancing understanding of the patient encounter in clinical practice, possibly to the benefit of physiotherapists and their patients

  • Reference Intervals for Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) From Birth to Senescence: Results From a Multicenter Study Using a New Automated Chemiluminescence IGF-1 Immunoassay Conforming to Recent International Recommendations.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 1945-7197 .- 0021-972X. ; 99:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Measurement of IGF-1 is a cornerstone in diagnosis and monitoring of GH-related diseases, but considerable discrepancies exist between analytical methods. A recent consensus conference defined criteria for validation of IGF-1 assays and for establishment of normative data. Objectives: Our objectives were development and validation of a novel automated IGF-1 immunoassay (iSYS; Immunodiagnostic Systems) according to international guidelines and establishment of method-specific age- and sex-adjusted reference intervals and analysis of their robustness. Setting and Participants: We conducted a multicenter study with samples from 12 cohorts from the United States, Canada, and Europe including 15ü014 subjects (6697 males and 8317 females, 0-94 years of age). Main Outcome Measures: We measured concentrations of IGF-1 as determined by the IDS iSYS IGF-1 assay. Results: A new IGF-1 assay calibrated against the recommended standard (02/254) and insensitive to the 6 high-affinity IGF binding proteins was developed and rigorously validated. Age- and sex-adjusted reference intervals derived from a uniquely large cohort reflect the age-related pattern of IGF-1 secretion: a decline immediately after birth followed by an increase until a pubertal peak (at 15 years of age). Later in life, values decrease continuously. The impact of gender is small, although across the lifespan, women have lower mean IGF-1 concentrations. Geographical region, sampling setting (community or hospital based), and rigor of exclusion criteria in our large cohort did not affect the reference intervals. Conclusions: Using large cohorts of well-characterized subjects from different centers allowed construction of robust reference ranges for a new automated IGF-1 assay. The strict adherence to recent consensus criteria for IGF-1 assays might facilitate clinical application of the results.

  • Which factors can affect the productivity and dynamics of cod stocks in the Baltic Sea, Kattegat and Skagerrak?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ocean and Coastal Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0964-5691 .- 1873-524X. ; 223
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stocks of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the Baltic Sea, Kattegat and Skagerrak (N. Europe) have been strongly exploited for decades bringing them into an enduringly depleted status. Scientific cod stock related advice for targeted and mixed fisheries is provided on an annual basis by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea. This advice forms a basis for ministerial decisions on, e.g., the total allowable catch and management plans. Despite measures to reduce fishing-induced mortality of cod, such as catch and effort restrictions, increased gear selectivity, closed areas and seasons, clear signs of recovery are yet to be seen. Thus, traditional advice for the management of these stocks may have to be complemented by advice on supporting measures focusing on other pressures hampering the recovery of cod. The present study elaborates on potential supportive measures for cod stock recovery in the Baltic Sea, Kattegat, and Skagerrak (including local populations where applicable), based on current knowledge. The list of measures presented here is the outcome of in-depth discussions on the state-of-the-art knowledge, among cod experts and further with stakeholders with the aim to follow principles of ecosystem-based fisheries management. Following the identification of different pressures on and prerequisites for the separate stocks, the listed measures differ between stocks and include cod bycatch mortality reduction, alterations in fisheries affecting food sources for cod, restocking, protection of juvenile habitats, and reduced predation. The literature review and the list of measures are intended to provide decision-support for managers and policymakers aiming to provide conditions for the cod stocks to recover.

  • Analysis of Complex Genetic Traits in Population Cohorts using High-throughput Genotyping Technology
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Most human traits and common diseases have a complex genetic makeup involving more than one gene. The work presented in this thesis investigates standing body height and the common disease type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In study I we analyzed two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TCF7L2 gene that had been shown to be associated with T2DM. Analysis was performed in the ULSAM population cohort of ~1500 males. We were able to replicate the association to type 2 diabetes and in addition to that we made a novel find, showing association between the risk alleles and increased proinsulin levels. In study II we analyzed four genes identified to be associated with T2DM in a genome-wide association study. We analyzed SNPs in these genes in the ULSAM population cohort and found an association between SNPs in the HHEX gene and insulin responses and insulin levels. The aim of studies III-V was to identify genes affecting normal variation in standing body height. Using a candidate gene approach in study III, 17 genes were screened in the ULSAM population cohort using SNPs. A suggestive association of the ESR1 gene with height was found and confirmed as significant in males from the PIVUS population cohort. In study IV, as a part of the GenomEUtwin project, we performed genetic fine mapping of a linked locus for body height on the X-chromosome. By analyzing 1377 SNPs in 780 Finnish twins, we mapped a region spanning 65kb of this locus with linkage to body height in males. This region contains the GPC3 and PHF6 genes that have known connections to syndromes were standing body height is affected. In study V significant linkage and association to standing body height in males was found for the COL1A11 gene, using population cohorts from Finland and Iceland.

  • Association of the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene with body height in adult males from two Swedish population cohorts
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 3:3, s. e1807-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human body height is a complex genetic trait with high heritability. We performed an association study of 17 candidate genes for height in the Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men (ULSAM) that consists of 1153 elderly men of age 70 born in the central region of Sweden. First we genotyped a panel of 137 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) evenly distributed across the candidate genes in the ULSAM cohort. We identified 4 SNPs in the estrogen receptor gene (ESR1) on chromosome 6q25.1 with suggestive signals of association (p<0.05) with standing body height. This result was followed up by genotyping the same 25 SNPs in the ESR1 gene as in ULSAM in a second population cohort, the Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) cohort that consist of 507 males and 509 females of age 70 from the same geographical region as ULSAM. One SNP, rs2179922 located in intron 4 of ESR1 showed and association signal (p = 0.0056) in the male samples from the PIVUS cohort. Homozygote carriers of the G-allele of the SNP rs2179922 were on average 0.90 cm taller than individuals with the two other genotypes at this SNP in the ULSAM cohort and 2.3 cm taller in the PIVUS cohort. No association was observed for the females in the PIVUS cohort.
