  • Identity and Engagement for professional formation
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Meaning, Relevance and Variation. The second nordic conference on adult learning,2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •  Students entering university have notions surrounding their future professions. In someinstances the profession has a high social status and the work in that area is well known, inother areas the nature of professional work is opaque. In this paper we discuss the ways inwhich students develop a sense of identity with their profession, how the nature of the profession impacts on identity formation, how students engage with learning based on their professional expectations, and how their pedagogic experience as a whole leads towards their professional formation. We suggest that Wenger-s community of practice models that highlight integrated or distributed forms of engagement may be enhanced through a consideration of dimensions of learning, identity formation and engagement with professionally encountered content. To explore these issues we combine the research outcomes of two international projects, the Journeymen and Professional Entity projects, involving over 500 students in a variety of discipline areas. Students in these projects participated in semi-structured interviews that focused their attention on their understanding and experience of professional work, and the way in which their learning contributed to the development of their professional identities.Identity formation and engagement can be seen to be a relation with the students- learning experience - which in themselves build up an expectation of the intending profession - and the manner in which they anticipate or practice in professional working life. We postulate that students- views of their profession and their pedagogic experiences combine to incline themtowards a clear or diffuse sense of professional engagement.

    • At the core of higher education is the experience of students whose focus for learning is often directed towards their future employability. In this paper, we explore the intersections between two large international research projects involving over 500 students. Interviews with students yielded their conceptions of learning and work in specific discipline and professional areas. Analysis of the Swedish and Australian data sets showed the important interplay between students' individual ideas about learning and future work with their workplace. A meta-analysis of the two projects highlights the utility of higher education for students' future working life and suggests ways in which institutions and policy makers can critique current practice in a way that will incline curriculum and teaching development towards professional formation. © 2007 Springer Science + Business Media B.V.

  • Preparation for professional work? A meta-analysis of two international research projects on the transition from higher education to work life
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 5th International Conference on Researching Work and Learning,2007. - Cape Town : University Press.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  How do students experience their formal studies in preparation for professional work? This common research interest was the incentive to explore the intersections between two large international research projects that both build on a large number of interviews with students about their conceptions of learning and work in different disciplines and professional areas. Analysis of the Swedish and Australian data sets showed the important interplay between students' individual ideas about learning and future work within their workplace. Through the use of techniques of qualitative meta-analysis, we have linked the results from both projects and constructed a model of significant features of professional learning. In this paper, we apply the model to one case study from each of the research projects, and in turn use these case studies to illuminate the model. The model shows how students may be inclined towards the development of professional identities and engagement with their studies and profession, depending on the relationships between the students- perceptions of learning for work and their views of professional knowledge. We suggest that the model can be used to investigate the nature of professionally oriented knowledge, but also as a means to analyse the impact of higher education, curriculum planning and teaching for professional formation.

  • Understanding learning and learning for understanding : Exploring medical students' personal understandings of learning tasks and experiences of learning and understanding in medicine
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The central concern of the thesis is to problematise the complexity of the relationship between student learning and the teaching-learning environment in medicine as experienced by students. The thesis argues that learning material presented to students offers only potential for learning. What students make of that potential is influenced by a number of different variables and as such this needs to be investigated empirically. High-quality learning is an important goal for all higher education and previous research together with the empirical findings presented in this thesis convey the importance for students to seek a holistic approach to learning. Such a learning approach encompasses not only learning of facts and theories but also includes exercising an ability to reflect and reason, to organise facts and theories into wholes, and to explore how they relate to each other. Most importantly, it involves the ability to understand the grounds on which facts and theories are chosen for specific purposes depending on context. The thesis explores these issues by drawing on findings from three studies of medical students’ experiences of learning and understanding and how students’ personal understandings of subject content in medicine come to the fore in their work on learning tasks. By applying a context-oriented methodological perspective on learning, focusing on what students actually do in a learning situation, the thesis enables an in-depth investigation of relationships between aspects of content, context and the individual. The results show that the learning environment in the medical programme to a large extent does not make sufficient room for students to express understanding of this dynamic character. In the thesis it is argued that to facilitate such an understanding it is necessary for both students and teachers to increase awareness of the context-dependency of subject content, facts and theories, and the different meanings content takes depending on context of use.

  • The Archive Art Phenomenon : History and Critique at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation investigates the relationship between art and archive at the turn of the twenty-first century. The object of study is the phenomenon of archive art, understood as a combination of theories of the archive, artworks, and different kinds of texts (catalogues, scholarly articles, critical essays, etc.) delineating the art here called archive art. The study has been conducted by cross-reading the different elements that make up the phenomenon of archive art with various discourses and developments both within and outside the artworld. It investigates how the archive became a ubiquitous reference in art discourse and the functions and implications the notion has within an art context. Each of the dissertation’s six chapters adds to and builds on the previous, thereby examining an increasingly thickening web of conceptual relations. Chapter I examines five texts about archive art written between 1995 and 2008. Chapter II outlines writings about archives from other disciplines frequently referenced in art discourse, and shows how this “archive theory” (including works by Foucault, Derrida and others) overlaps in many ways with the Institutional Theory of Art. Chapter III analyses the archive art phenomenon by juxtaposing three different aspects of the tension between materiality and immateriality: the artwork as object or idea; connotations of analogue and digital technology; and different notions of traditional and poststructural forms of history writing. Chapter IV is concerned with the role of the artist as historian, archivist and researcher, and examines how the discourse around studio-based research overlaps with the different modes of historical truth-claims outlined in the previous chapter. This chapter also analyses references to research as process and form in archive art discourse. Chapter V examines different kinds of critique of institutions and shows how the archive art phenomenon intersects with a critical paradigm in the academy and beyond. Chapter VI ties together many results of the previous discussions by analysing the archive art phenomenon within a broader historical context. The chapter shows that history, the presumed subject of much archive art, can also be considered indicative of a shift away from a grounding of the art object within a teleological art history, toward an institutionally defined concept of art as an archival structure. In that sense the archive art phenomenon is analysed both as a resistance to, and a symptom of, what some have called the presentism of the current era.  The archive is an example of what Mieke Bal terms a “travelling concept”, as it moves between and within disciplines and contexts. The ubiquity of the concept in art discourse is part of a broader “turn” to the archive, however, this study shows that the archive takes on meaning specific to the contemporary artworld. The notion of the archive here functions as a short-cut for theorizing artists’ interest in the material traces of the past (the concrete, “dusty” archive) as well as their critical investigation of the post-1960s artworld (the archive as metaphor and structure). What may seem like a mere trend within contemporary art discourse, is thus shown to have functions and implications that interlock with the conceptual grounding of contemporary art.

  • Fotografiska drömmar och digitala illusioner : Bruket av bearbetade fotografier i svensk dagspress, reklam, propaganda och konst under 1990-talet
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to study what effects computer-based technology for altering photographic images had on the photographic medium and visual culture in general. The aim is also to describe the expectations and conceptions of photographic alterations and digital technology in the 1990s. The study is based on a quantitative analysis of altered photographs in the Swedish daily and weekly press, interviews with artists, artdirectors and picture editors at the five largest daily papers in Sweden, as well as a systematic survey of Swedish photography journals. The dissertation comprises a historic survey of the use of photographic alteration from the mid 19th century to 1989, and a detailed account of the 1990s in Sweden. The quantitative analysis shows that the quantity of discernibly altered photographic images in the daily press and advertising increased in Sweden in the 1990s. This analysis also reveals that the daily papers subjected to the study did not follow their own guidelines concerning the marking of altered photographs and the frequency of labelling was generally low. Three thematic Twentynine images are presented with more comprehensive image analyses. The first theme is the paradoxical photograph, which means that they present a paradoxical relationship between representational techniques and that which is represented. These kind of motifs are interpreted as an expression of an initial fascination with a new technology. The second theme is the perfect photograph, which concerns altered photographs that does not appear to be altered. The third, an last theme, the transgressive photograph, deals with photographic images that transgress the photographic medium by appropriating appearances and functions from other forms of signs and image techniques. The transition to computer-based image alteration did not only affect the character and extent of altered photographs, it also produced effects on the photographic medium and visual culture in general. As technical tools for alterations of photographic images enabled a higher degree of perfection, there was for example a reaction in the form of an increased interest in the imperfect. The uses of altered photographic images also show how questions of authenticity, reality and representation were brought to the fore by the use of image alteration in photography during the 1990s. This study problematise technology-based definitions of photographic images and show how altered photographs contribute to an increased awareness of the arbitrary character of photographic images.

  • Design, Synthesis, and Multivariate Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship of Salicylanilides-Potent Inhibitors of Type III Secretion in Yersinia
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-2623 .- 1520-4804. ; 50:24, s. 6177-6188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analogues to the salicylanilide N-(4-Chlorophenyl)-2-acetoxy-3,5-diiodobenzamide, 1a, an inhibitor of type III secretion (T3S) in Yersinia, were selected, synthesized, and biologically evaluated in three cycles. First, a set of analogues with variations in the salicylic acid ring moiety was synthesized to probe possible structural variation. A basic structure-activity relationship was established and then used to cherry-pick compounds from a principal component analysis score plot of salicylanilides to generate a second set. A third set with increased likelihood of biological activity was designed using D-optimal onion design. A quantitative structure-activity relationship model using hierarchical partial least-square regression to latent structures (Hi-PLS) was computed using PLS score vectors of building blocks correlated to the % inhibition of T3S as a response. A PLS discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model was derived using the same descriptor set as that for the Hi-PLS model. Both models were validated with an external test set.

  • Changes in the ratio between FPR and FPRL1 triggered superoxide production in human neutrophils-a tool in analysing receptor specific events
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Immunological Methods. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1759. ; 331:1-2, s. 50-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutrophils express the G protein-coupled N-formyl peptide receptor (FPR) as well as its closely related homologue, formyl peptide like receptor 1 (FPRL1), and activation of these receptors induce a release of superoxide anions. The magnitude of the responses induced by the two peptide agonists fMLF and WKYMVM, specific for FPR and FPRL1, respectively, was found to be very variable in different neutrophil populations. The ratio between the FPR and FPRL1 triggered respiratory burst was, however, very constant and close to 1. The ratio was changed in neutrophils that were desensitized as well as when the signaling through either of the receptors was inhibited by receptor specific antagonists or by a PIP(2) binding peptide. The FPR/FPRL1 ratio was not changed in primed neutrophils or in differentiated HL-60 cells. We show that the change in the ratio, calculated from the amount of radical release in neutrophils triggered with FPR and FPRL1 specific agonists can be used as a valuable tool to find/identify receptor specific/selective changes mediated by peptides/proteins/drugs, as well as to identify cells from patients or groups of patients that diverge from normal cells in their FPR/FPRL1 triggered functions.
