  • Sensitivity and Antenna Noise Temperature Analysis of the Feed System for the Onsala Twin Telescopes

    • The demand for higher precision measurements in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) continues to grow, which drives the technical development of next generation international VLBI stations called the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS). The VGOS design includes the idea of twin telescopes, i.e. two identical telescopes that will be used for continuous observations to study geodynamical processes. Such a twin telescope system has recently been installed at the Onsala Space Observatory, Sweden. The Onsala twin telescopes (OTT) are 13.2 m diameter, dual-reflector systems with a ring-focus sub-reflector. In this paper we present the estimated performance, focusing on the achievable system equivalent flux density (SEFD), sky noise modeling, and antenna noise temperature. We evaluate the system for two different cryogenic wideband quad-ridge flared horn (QRFH) feed setups operating over 3-18 GHz and 4.6-24 GHz. Analysis based on measured feed data shows a low antenna noise temperature and that SEFD of 1000 Jy can be achieved for the system. The result from Y-factor test shows TREC = 10 K over most of the frequency band.

  • Sensitivity simulation and measurement of the SKA Band 1 wideband feed package on MeerKAT

    • Advances in wideband feed technology for radio telescopes enable high sensitivity observations over large bandwidths. The wideband quad-ridge flared horn (QRFH) feed package for Band 1 of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) was optimized for high sensitivity. The 3:1 feed package covers 350-1050 MHz and is a complete room temperature system with low-noise amplifiers integrated inside the ridges of the horn. The QRFH is dual-linear polarized and designed with spline-defined profiles for the horn and ridge shape. Measured feed s-parameters show input reflection less than -11 dB across the band with good port isolation. In this paper we present the first measured sensitivity levels of the Band 1 feed package, which was tested on the SKA precursor reflector MeerKAT. We also present measured aperture efficiency and intrinsic cross-polarization (IXR). The measured results show good agreement with simulations.

  • Ultra-wideband feed systems for the EVN and SKA - evaluated for VGOS

    • The design of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project for radio astronomy is now materializing at a rapid speed; the EU Horizon 2020 RadioNet project BRoad-bAND (BRAND) has the ambition to deliver a decade bandwidth receiver for EVN. The ultra-wideband quad-ridge flared horn (QRFH) feed systems developed for these projects show good performance within the geodetic VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS) frame due to the overlapping frequency bands and reflector geometries. We estimate, through simulation, system equivalent flux density (SEFD) of the two feed systems in the VGOS reflector and compare the it to the existing system installed on one of the 13.2 m diameter reflectors of the Onsala twin telescope (OTT). The two frequency bands analyzed cover 1.5−15.5 GHz and 4.6−24 GHz. Both systems show SEFD better than 1000 Jy over large parts of resp. frequency band - comparable to the 3−18 GHz feed systems. For the SKA QRFH over 4.6−24 GHz, the water vapor absorption line at 22 GHz is within the operational band, therefore we study the application of water-vapor radiometry in line-of-sight of the telescope.

    • We present the Band B feed system over 4.6-24 GHz designed for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) reflector for radio astronomy applications. The feed is a Quad-ridge Flared Horn (QRFH) with a customized shape based on spline-defined profiles to achieve improved wideband performance. The feed system shows high aperture efficiency and sensitivity on the SKA reflector in predictions based on measured feed beam patterns. We present the feed design overview, cryogenic dewar concept and measurement of receiver noise (10-20 K) with wideband low-noise amplifiers, and full system simulation of the performance.

    • We present the design of a wideband feed system for the Band 1 of the Square Kilometer Array (project). The Band 1 feed system uses a quad-ridged flared horn (QRFH) optimizedfor a offset Gregorian dual reflector dish to cover RF frequencies from 350 - 1050 MHz, and a cryogenic low noise amplifier (LNA). The feed horn is optimized to achieve best Aeff/Tsys over the entire band, by making trade-off between aperture efficiency and spill over noise contribution. The optimised feed horn shows above 70% efficiency over the entire 3:1 band, with return loss better than 10 dB. The cryostat following the feed has between 9 to 14 K noise, measured at the co-axial connector of the QRFH. The estimated on-sky sensitivity of the feed system is better than specified 4.2 m2/K averaged over the entire frequency band.

  • Interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and vegetation in the Fennoscandian tundra

    • I have, in this thesis, studied the interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and tundra vegetation, on islands in, and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri, in northern Norway. As isolated islands are virtually free of predation, I have been able to compare plant-herbivore interactions in the presence and absence of predators. I transplanted vegetation from an island with predators and voles, to predator-free islands with and with out voles. The results reveal the existence of a terrestrial trophic cascade as voles had a severe impact on the transplanted vegetation on the predator-free islands, but only minor effects on the mainland where predators are present. Moreover, this study shows that plant defence was only a successful strategy when predators were present. Voles reduced the abundance of all available plants during winter on the predator-free islands. The results imply that cascading effects of predation are most important for well-defended plants with grazing-sensitive morphology as these plants escape herbivore impacts in the presence of predators but are vulnerable in their absenceI studied the recovery of intensively grazed vegetation by building exclosures on islands that have been heavily grazed by voles for almost a decade.This study shows that the collective biomass of vascular plants recovered completely on three years, when voles were excluded. Although most species that are dominating the ungrazed vegetation recovered rapidly in the exclosures, the vegetation did not simply return to its ungrazed state. Herbaceous plants increased and there were pronounced differences in response among evergreen dwarf-shrub species. The semi-prostrate and tannin rich crowberry (Empetrum nigrum), showed the strongest recovery of all species, while the erect lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) only showed weak signs of recovery. Thus, growth form determined the potential of plants to recover, whereas the trade-off between defensive investments and capacity to recover was weak or absent.I studied the interaction between gray-sided voles and their main winter food plant, bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) on islands in and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri. I compared the abundance, population structure and palatability of bilberry ramets between vole-free islands, islands with voles but no predators and mainland sites with both voles and predators. Voles decreased the abundance of bilberry on the mainland, but the effect was much stronger on predator-free islands. Bilberry was fairly tolerant to grazing as it partially compensated for the lost tissue by producing more new ramets. Moreover, a cafeteria experiment showed that voles preferred the ramets from predator-free islands, which is inconsistent with conjectures emphasizing inducible plant defenses. The vole-bilberry interaction lacks features of delayed density dependence that could explain the vole cycles. I conducted a clipping and fertilization experiment to further investigate the effects of herbivory on palatability of bilberry shoots. Fertilization decreased the concentration of condensed tannins in shoots of bilberry and voles preferred fertilized and clipped shoots. I found no indication of induced defense that could reduce the palatability of bilberry twigs in response to herbivory.The relationships between gray-sided vole densities, levels of invertebrate herbivory and chemical quality of leaves of Northern willow (Salix glauca) were studied on islands and mainland sites with contrasting vole densities. I found a positive correlation between level of invertebrate herbivory and vole density. The number of leaves per shoot, leaf size and leaf nitrogen content were also positively correlated with vole densities, while leaf C/N ratios were negatively correlated with vole densities. The positive correlation between vole densities and level of invertebrate herbivory is probably due to a facilitative effect of voles on invertebrate herbivores, mediated through changes in plant chemistry.

  • Integrating virtual patients into courses: follow-up seminars and perceived benefit

    • Context: The use of virtual patients (VPs) suggests promising effects on student learning. However, currently empirical data on how best to use VPs in practice are scarce. More knowledge is needed regarding aspects of integrating VPs into a course, of which student acceptance is one key issue. Several authors call for looking beyond technology to see VPs in relation to the course context. The follow-up seminar is proposed as an important aspect of integration that warrants investigation.Methods: A cross-sectional explanatory study was performed in a clinical clerkship introduction course at four teaching hospitals affiliated to the same medical faculty. The VP-related activities were planned collaboratively by teachers from all four settings. However, each setting employed a different strategy to follow up the activity in the course. Sixteen questionnaire items were grouped into three scales pertaining to: perceived benefit of VPs; wish for more guidance on using VPs, and wish for assessment and feedback on VPs. Scale scores were compared across the four settings, which were ranked according to the level of intensity of students processing of cases during VP follow- up activities.Results: The perceived benefit of VPs and their usage were higher in the two intense-use settings compared with the moderate-and lowintensity settings. The wish for more guidance was high in the low-and one of the highintensity settings. Students in all settings displayed little interest in more assessment and feedback regarding VPs.Conclusions: High case processing intensity was related to positive perceptions of the benefit of VPs. However, the low interest in more assessment and feedback on the use of VPs indicates the need to clearly communicate the added value of the follow-up seminar. The findings suggest that a more intense follow-up pays off in terms of the benefit perceived by students. This study illustrates the need to consider VPs from the perspective of a holistic course design and not as isolated add‐ons.

    • We present measured on-dish beam patterns for a room temperature spline-profile quad-ridge flared horn (QRFH) feed designed for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Band 1 covering 350-1050 MHz. The feed and LNA package has been mounted on the offset Gregorian SKA precursor prototype telescope, Dish Verification Antenna 1 (DVA-1) located at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) near Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. Telescope beam pattern cuts are measured by sweeping over the sun and adding corrections for the solar disk size, elevation and aperture efficiency. Sensitivity calculated with measured receiver noise show good agreement with the predicted performance.
