  • Bachtin, Austin och Wadensjö : Varför tal som agerande inte är en talakt
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tango för tre. - Stockholm : Stockholm University. - 9789198364705 ; , s. 93-99
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study analyzes the theoretical relationship between Wadensjö’s dialogue interpreting description models talk as activity and talk as text, on the one hand, and Austin’s and Searle’s speech act theory, on the other. By means of a short literature study, one can conclude that there is more or less no theoretical connection between speech act theory and ‘talk as activity’, since the latter is instead founded on Bakhtin’s dialogic theory and Goffman’s works on social interaction. However, some connections are found between speech act theory and ‘talk as text’.

  • Military interpreter training for context specific situations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Interpreter training in conflict and post-conflict scenarios. - London : Routledge. - 9781003230359 ; , s. 31-42
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter addresses how the specific needs for interpreting skills, knowledge and abilities in conflict zones are met in military interpreter training. It outlines the requested interpreting skills identified in literature on interpreting in military operations and then explores to what extent these skills are acquired in contemporary military interpreter training, and how this is done. The chapter introduces a relationship between interpretation in conflict zones and Public Sector interpreting (PSI). Military personnel with tasks related to foreign languages and communication is a staff category with different names and a variety of tasks. The role of interpreters in conflict or post-conflict zones, be that military personnel or civilian volunteers, includes a wide range of tasks and is usually not restricted to interpreting. Swedish military interpreters who have gone through the training programme are expected to be fluent in three languages: Swedish, English, and one of either Arabic, French, or Russian.

  • Role play as a means of training and testing public service interpreting
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Public Service Interpreting. - London : Routledge. - 9780367278427 - 9780429298202 ; , s. 292-308
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Role-playing is a vital part of any interpreter-training programme and testing activity (Hale 2007, Hlavac et al. 2016). This chapter will discuss both in what ways role-playing can be used as an instrument to train or test specific skills and knowledge, and how variations in some components of a role-play – instructions, participants’ knowledge and abilities, general and individual goals and objectives – have an impact on the interaction between the participants and on the resemblance between the role-play and a corresponding, real-life situation. Thus, different role-play setups are likely to suit different purposes. Training or testing terminology knowledge with scripted role-plays is just a small part of what can be achieved with a variated use of the possibilities of role-playing.

  • Tolkmedierade samtal som rollspel
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis draws onthree sets of recordings of Swedish-Russian interpreter-mediated conversations, carried out as role plays. First, scripted role plays, performed as part of the Swedish state interpretercertification test, involving candidate interpreters and officials from thegovernmental body providing these tests. Secondly, both scripted andnon-scripted role plays, performed during interpreter training courses at theSwedish Armed Forces’ Language School. And thirdly, non-scripted role playsorganised in order to explore differences in style between more and lessexperienced official negotiators, working at a high international diplomaticlevel, for Sweden and Russia respectively, assisted by interpreters. The thesisadopts a text-oriented as well as an interactionist approach oninterpreter-mediated interaction and compares the management of turn-taking andrepair sequences in the three types of setting, focusing particularly on howthe presence or absence of a script affects turn-taking and the unfolding ofrepair sequences.

  • Syntolkning som multimodal medierande aktivitet
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tango för tre : en dansant festskrift till Cecilia Wadensjö - en dansant festskrift till Cecilia Wadensjö. - 9789198364705 ; , s. 63-74
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Audio description (AD) offers people with visual impairments and blindness a richer and more detailed understanding and experience of film, theatre and other events by describing what is seen but not heard (Holsanova 2016b, 2020a). With the analysis of audio described film scenes, I will illustrate that AD is a complex meaning-making activity that cannot be limited to only replacing the visual part with a verbal part. Audio describers are aware of the interplay between the different modes of expression, create content links and take into account the meaning of the film sounds, music and dialogue when deciding what needs to be described from the visual scene, how it should be described and when. The goal of AD is to complement what is missing in the multimodal interplay in order to achieve a comparable understanding and experience of the non-sighted audience (Reviers 2017). Audio describers are thus engaged in a complex multimodal mediating activity (Braun 2007, Holsanova 2020a, 2021).
