  • Anger and disgust shape judgments of social sanctions across cultures, especially in high individual autonomy societies
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Research. - 2045-2322. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip. Moreover, we find that the experience of anger is consistently the strongest predictor of judgments of confrontation, compared to other emotions. Although the link between state-based emotions and judgments may seem universal, its strength varies across countries. Aligned with theoretical predictions, this link is stronger in societies, and among individuals, that place higher value on individual autonomy. Thus, autonomy values may increase the role that emotions play in guiding judgments of social sanctions.

  • Association of Gout Polygenic Risk Score With Age at Disease Onset and Tophaceous Disease in European and Polynesian Men With Gout
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Arthritis & Rheumatology. - : Wiley. - 2326-5191 .- 2326-5205. ; 75:5, s. 816-825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. To determine whether a gout polygenic risk score (PRS) is associated with age at gout onset and tophaceous disease in European, East Polynesian, and West Polynesian men and women with gout. Methods. A 19-variant gout PRS was produced in 7 European gout cohorts (N = 4,016), 2 East Polynesian gout cohorts (N = 682), and 1 West Polynesian gout cohort (N = 490). Sex-stratified regression models were used to estimate the relationship between the PRS and age at gout onset and tophaceous disease. Results. The PRS was associated with earlier age at gout onset in men (beta = -3.61 in years per unit PRS [95% confidence interval (95% CI) -4.32, -2.90] in European men; beta = -6.35 [95% CI -8.91, -3.80] in East Polynesian men; beta = -3.51 [95% CI -5.46, -1.57] in West Polynesian men) but not in women (beta = 0.07 [95% CI -2.32, 2.45] in European women; beta = 0.20 [95% CI -7.21, 7.62] in East Polynesian women; beta -3.33 [95% CI -9.28, 2.62] in West Polynesian women). The PRS showed a positive association with tophaceous disease in men (odds ratio [OR] for the association 1.15 [95% CI 1.00, 1.31] in European men; OR 2.60 [95% CI 1.66, 4.06] in East Polynesian men; OR 1.53 [95% CI 1.07, 2.19] in West Polynesian men) but not in women (OR for the association 0.68 [95% CI 0.42, 1.10] in European women; OR 1.45 [95% CI 0.39, 5.36] in East Polynesian women). The PRS association with age at gout onset was robust to the removal of ABCG2 variants from the PRS in European and East Polynesian men (beta = -2.42 [95% CI -3.37, -1.46] and beta = -6.80 [95% CI -10.06, -3.55], respectively) but not in West Polynesian men (beta = -1.79 [95% CI -4.74, 1.16]). Conclusion. Genetic risk variants for gout also harbor risk for earlier age at gout onset and tophaceous disease in European and Polynesian men. Our findings suggest that earlier gout onset involves the accumulation of gout risk alleles in men but perhaps not in women, and that this genetic risk is shared across multiple ancestral groups.

  • Mycophenolate mofetil versus cyclophosphamide for remission induction in ANCA-associated vasculitis: a randomised, non-inferiority trial
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annals of the rheumatic diseases. - : BMJ. - 1468-2060 .- 0003-4967. ; 78:3, s. 399-405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyclophosphamide induction regimens are effective for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV), but are associated with infections, malignancies and infertility. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) has shown high remission rates in small studies of AAV.MethodsWe conducted a randomised controlled trial to investigate whether MMF was non-inferior to cyclophosphamide for remission induction in AAV. 140 newly diagnosed patients were randomly assigned to MMF or pulsed cyclophosphamide. All patients received the same oral glucocorticoid regimen and were switched to azathioprine following remission. The primary endpoint was remission by 6 months requiring compliance with the tapering glucocorticoid regimen. Patients with an eGFR <15 mL/min were excluded from the study.ResultsAt baseline, ANCA subtype, disease activity and organ involvement were similar between groups. Non-inferiority was demonstrated for the primary remission endpoint, which occurred in 47 patients (67%) in the MMF group and 43 patients (61%) in the cyclophosphamide group (risk difference 5.7%, 90% CI −7.5% to 19%). Following remission, more relapses occurred in the MMF group (23 patients, 33%) compared with the cyclophosphamide group (13 patients, 19%) (incidence rate ratio 1.97, 95% CI 0.96 to 4.23, p=0.049). In MPO-ANCA patients, relapses occurred in 12% of the cyclophosphamide group and 15% of the MMF group. In PR3-ANCA patients, relapses occurred in 24% of the cyclophosphamide group and 48% of the MMF group. Serious infections were similar between groups (26% MMF group, 17% cyclophosphamide group) (OR 1.67, 95% CI 0.68 to 4.19, p=0.3).ConclusionMMF was non-inferior to cyclophosphamide for remission induction in AAV, but resulted in higher relapse rate.Trial registration numberNCT00414128.

  • Mobile ATM for developing countries
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Society benefits from M-Commerce applications to a greater extent. The most attractive benefit of M-Commerce applications is the mobility. Even though users have a poor computer literacy, they will be able to use the M-Commerce applications easily. Additionally, the M-Commerce applications have the potential of reducing the distance barriers. In developing countries, especially in rural areas, accessing financial and banking services is a critical issue. This paper proposes a system called Mobile-ATM to address this problem by incorporating the mobile technology. Also it discusses the limitations of traditional ATM systems, the need of a new M-Commerce application to overcome the limitations and security related issues. In the proposed solution, people can withdraw money from a Mobile-ATM without going to a traditional ATM. The Mobile-ATM system uses even cheap mobile phones, functioning as payment terminals. It will reduce the limitations of traditional ATM and enables confidential and secured ATM transactions.

  • Fighting Dengue Fever with Aerial Drones
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: EWSN '22. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 206-207
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dengue and Zika are two arboviral viruses that affect a significant portion of the world population. Each year, almost 400 million dengue infections happen. Due to severe dengue fever, around half a million people each year are in need of hospitalization and about 36.000 people die.Dengue spreads rapidly in densely populated urban areas. The principle vector species of both dengue and zika viruses are the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. They breed in very slow-flowing or standing water pools. It is important to reduce and control such potential breeding grounds to contain the spread of these diseases. We describe our system design and presents initial results. We employ mmWave radios to detect water retention areas as potential mosquito habitats. Next, we use multi-spectral images to analyze the water area, measure the depth of the water, and understand the larvae density. After that, we fuse the results for the final classification of the water area.

  • CNN-Based Estimation of Water Depth from Multispectral Drone Imagery for Mosquito Control
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, ICIP 2023 - Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781728198354 - 9781728198361 ; , s. 3250-3254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a machine learning approach that uses a custom Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for estimating the depth of water pools from multispectral drone imagery. Using drones to obtain this information offers a cheaper, timely, and more accurate solution compared to alternative methods, such as manual inspection. This information, in turn, represents an asset to identify potential breeding sites of mosquito larvae, which grow only in shallow water pools. As a significant part of the world's population is affected by mosquito-borne viral infections, including Dengue and Zika, identifying mosquito breeding sites is key to control their spread. Experiments with 5-band drone imagery show that our CNN-based approach is able to measure shallow water depths accurately up to a root mean square error of less than 0.5 cm, outperforming state-of-the-art Random Forest methods and empirical approaches.
