  • Room temperature ferrimagnetism in Yb-doped relaxor ferroelectric PbFe2/3W1/3O3
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 115:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report ferrimagnetism and reentrant relaxor ferroelectricity near room temperature in a Yb-doped PbFe2/3W1/3O3 cubic perovskite. Structural analysis reveals the presence of a single cubic perovskite phase, with the m space group [lattice parameter: a=8.0112(3) angstrom], and partial B-site ordering. The B-site ordering yields uncompensated magnetic moments in the antiferromagnetic structure of PbFe2/3W1/3O3 and ferrimagnetism near room temperature. An excess moment of similar to 0.6 mu(B)/B-site may be estimated from magnetic hysteresis curves recorded up to 50kOe at 5K. The temperature dependent magnetodielectric study reveals a sequential phase transition from a long-range ferroelectric state (across 280K) to a short-range relaxor ferroelectric state (across 190K). The long-range ferroelectric ordering is found to be more affected by the application of external magnetic fields than the relaxor phase.

  • Partial cation ordering, relaxor ferroelectricity, and ferrimagnetism in Pb(Fe1-xYbx)(2/3)W1/3O3 solid solutions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 128:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of ceramic samples of Yb-doped PbFe2/3W1/3O3 have been investigated by a variety of methods including x-ray powder diffraction, magnetometry, and dielectric spectroscopy. In addition, theoretical investigations were made using first-principles density functional calculations. All the doped samples Pb(Fe1-xYbx)(2/3)W1/3O3 (PFYWO) (0.1 <= x <= 0.5) were found to crystallize in an ordered cubic ( F m 3 m ) structure with partial ordering in the B-perovskite sites. Observed changes in the cationic order were accompanied by differences in the dielectric and magnetic responses of the system. While pure PbFe2/3W1/3O3 is antiferromagnetic, the doped Pb(Fe1-xYbx)(2/3)W1/3O3 PFYWO samples display excess moments and ferrimagnetic-like behavior, associated with differences in B ' and B '' site occupancies of the magnetic Fe3+ cations. The magnetic transition temperature of the ferrimagnetic phase is found to decrease with increasing Yb content, from T-N similar to 350K of the undoped sample down to 137K for x=0.5. All PFYWO compounds display a ferroelectric relaxor behavior akin to that of PbFe2/3W1/3O3, albeit our results show significant changes of the frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric properties. The changes of the properties of PFYWO with increasing Yb substitution can be explained by the changes in the cation size/charge mismatch and the size difference of the two ordered positions.

  • A global agenda for advancing freshwater biodiversity research
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ecology Letters. - : Wiley. - 1461-023X .- 1461-0248. ; 25:2, s. 255-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global freshwater biodiversity is declining dramatically, and meeting the challenges of this crisis requires bold goals and the mobilisation of substantial resources. While the reasons are varied, investments in both research and conservation of freshwater biodiversity lag far behind those in the terrestrial and marine realms. Inspired by a global consultation, we identify 15 pressing priority needs, grouped into five research areas, in an effort to support informed stewardship of freshwater biodiversity. The proposed agenda aims to advance freshwater biodiversity research globally as a critical step in improving coordinated actions towards its sustainable management and conservation.

  • Interplay of lattice-spin-orbital coupling and Jahn-Teller effect in noncollinear spinel Ti x Mn1-x (Fe y Co1-y )2O4 : a neutron diffraction study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 36:35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local magnetostructural changes and dynamical spin fluctuations in doubly diluted spinel TixMn1-x(FeyCo1-y)(2)O-4 has been reported by means of neutron diffraction and magnetization studies. Two distinct sets of compositions (i) x(Ti) = 0.20 and y(Fe) = 0.18; (ii) x(Ti) = 0.40 and y(Fe) = 0.435 have been considered for this study. The first compound of equivalent stoichiometry Ti0.20Mn0.80Fe0.36Co1.64O4 exhibits enhanced tetragonal distortion across the ferrimagnetic transition temperature T-C = 258 K in comparison to the end compound MnCo2O4 (T-C similar to 180 K) with a characteristic ratio c(t)/root 2a(t) of 0.99795(8) demonstrating robust lattice-spin-orbital coupling. However, in the second case Ti0.40Mn0.60Fe0.87Co1.13O4 with higher B-site compositions, the presence of Jahn-Teller ions with distinct behavior appears to counterbalance the strong tetragonal distortion thereby ceasing the lattice-spin-orbital coupling. Both the investigated systems show the coexistence of noncollinear antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic components in cubic and tetragonal settings. On the other hand, the dynamical ac-susceptibility, chi(ac)(T) reveals a cluster spin-glass state with Gabay-Toulouse (GT) like mixed phases behaviour below T-C. Such dispersive behaviour appears to be sensitive to the level of octahedral substitution. Further, the field dependence of chi(ac)(T) follows the weak anisotropic GT-line behaviour with crossover exponent Phi lies in the range 1.38-1.52 on the H-T plane which is in contrast to the B-site Ti substituted MnCo2O4 spinel that appears to follow irreversible non-mean-field AT-line behaviour (Phi similar to 3 + delta). Finally, the Arrott plots analysis indicates the presence of a pseudo first-order like transition (T < 20 K) which is in consonance with and zero crossover of the magnetic entropy change within the frozen spin-glass regime.

  • Machine Learning in Nanoscience : Big Data at Small Scales
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 20:1, s. 2-10
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent advances in machine learning (ML) offer new tools to extract new insights from large data sets and to acquire small data sets more effectively. Researchers in nanoscience are experimenting with these tools to tackle challenges in many fields. In addition to ML's advancement of nanoscience, nanoscience provides the foundation for neuromorphic computing hardware to expand the implementation of ML algorithms. In this Mini Review, we highlight some recent efforts to connect the ML and nanoscience communities by focusing on three types of interaction: (1) using ML to analyze and extract new insights from large nanoscience data sets, (2) applying ML to accelerate material discovery, including the use of active learning to guide experimental design, and (3) the nanoscience of memristive devices to realize hardware tailored for ML. We conclude with a discussion of challenges and opportunities for future interactions between nanoscience and ML researchers.

  • beta-Hydroxybutyrate deactivates Neutrophil NLRP3 inflammasome to relieve gout flares
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-1247. ; 18:9, s. 2077-2087
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aging and lipotoxicity are two major risk factors for gout that are linked by the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Neutrophil-mediated production of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) drives gouty flares that cause joint destruction, intense pain, and fever. However, metabolites that impact neutrophil inflammasome remain unknown. Here, we identified that ketogenic diet (KD) increases beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and alleviates urate crystal-induced gout without impairing immune defense against bacterial infection. BHB inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome in S100A9 fibril-primed and urate crystal-activated macrophages, which serve to recruit inflammatory neutrophils in joints. Consistent with reduced gouty flares in rats fed a ketogenic diet, BHB blocked IL-1 beta in neutrophils in a NLRP3-dependent manner in mice and humans irrespective of age. Mechanistically, BHB inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome in neutrophils by reducing priming and assembly steps. Collectively, our studies show that BHB, a known alternate metabolic fuel, is also an anti-inflammatory molecule that may serve as a treatment for gout.

  • 2D crystal structure and anisotropic magnetism of GdAu6.75−xAl0.5+x (x ≈ 0.54)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploration of the gold-rich part of the ternary Gd–Au–Al system afforded the intermetallic compound GdAu6.75−xAl0.5+x (x ≈ 0.54) which was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (Pnma, a = 18.7847(4) Å, b = 23.8208(5) Å, c = 5.3010(1) Å). GdAu6.75−xAl0.5+x crystallizes in a previously unknown structure type featuring layers of Gd2(Au, Al)29 and Gd2(Au, Al)28 clusters which are arranged as in a close-packing parallel to the ac plane. The Gd substructure corresponds to slightly corrugated 36 nets (dGd–Gd = 5.30–5.41 Å) which are stacked on top of each other along the b direction with alternating short (5.4, 5.6 Å, within layers) and long distances (6.4 Å, between layers). The title compound has been discussed with respect to a quasicrystal approximant (1/1 AC) GdAu5.3Al in the same system. The magnetic properties of GdAu6.75−xAl0.5+x were found to be reminiscent to those of some ternary ACs, with sharp peaks in the temperature dependent magnetization, and metamagnetic-like transitions. The material becomes antiferromagnetic below 25 K; magnetometry results suggest that the antiferromagnetic state is composed of ferromagnetic ac planes, coupled antiferromagnetically along the b direction.

  • Small extracellular vesicles in plasma reveal molecular effects of modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet in participants with mild cognitive impairment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Brain Communications. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2632-1297. ; 4:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extracellular vesicles have emerged as a less-invasive nano-tool for discovering biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. Here, we analysed different neuron-enriched extracellular vesicles from plasma to predict response and molecular mechanisms of ketogenic diet's efficacy in mild cognitive impairment participants. The study was a randomized crossover design in which cognitively normal and mild cognitive impairment participants consumed a modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet or American Heart Association diet for 6 weeks, followed by other diet after washout. L1 cell adhesion molecule, synaptophysin and neural cell adhesion molecule surface markers were used to enrich for neuron-secreted small extracellular vesicles (sEV(L1CAM), sEV(SYP) and sEV(NCAM)). For the first time, we have presented multiple evidences, including immunogold labelling/transmission electron microscopy, clusters of differentiation 63-ELISA-based assay, confocal microscopy fluorescent images and flow cytometry data confirming the presence of L1 cell adhesion molecule on the surface of sEV(L1CAM), validating purity and relative abundance of sEV(L1CAM) in the plasma. Cargo analysis of sEV(L1CAM) showed that modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet intervention reduces amyloid beta 1-42 (50.3%, P = 0.011), p181-tau (34.9%, P = 0.033) and neurofilament light (54.2%, P = 0.020) in mild cognitive impairment participants. Moreover, sEV(L1CAM)showed better sensitivity compared with CSF in analysing increased glutamate (6-folds, P < 0.0001) from mild cognitive impairment participants following modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet intervention. sEV(L1CAM) characterization also suggested that modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet differentially targets the expression of various glutamate receptors-glutamate receptor ionotropic NMDA1, glutamate receptor ionotropic NMDA2A, glutamate receptor ionotropic NMDA2B and glutamate receptor ionotropic AMPA type subunit 1. Importantly, these sEV(L1CAM) measures strongly correlated with corresponding clinical CSF biomarkers (neurogranin, amyloid beta 1-42, neurofilament light and tau). Furthermore, sEV(L1CAM) were loaded with less advanced glycation endproducts and exhibited anti-inflammatory activity following modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet intervention. Most importantly, the expression of monocarboxylate transporter 2 on the surface of sEV(L1CAM) predicted the amyloid beta 1-42 response to modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet intervention (area under the curve = 0.87, P = 0.0044) and offered a novel screening tool to identify participants responsive to this dietary intervention. Finally, sEV(L1CAM), sEV(SYP) and sEV(NCAM) showed significantly high concordance in analysing amyloid beta 1-42 (Pearson correlation coefficient >= 0.63, P < 0.01) and neurofilament light (Pearson correlation coefficient >= 0.49, P < 0.05). Together, small extracellular vesicles in plasma offers promise in assessing the efficacy of dietary/therapeutic intervention against mild cognitive impairment/Alzheimer's disease.
