  • αvβ8 integrin-expression by BATF3-dependent dendritic cells facilitates early IgA responses to Rotavirus
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Mucosal Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1933-0219. ; 9:2, s. 53-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Secretory intestinal IgA can protect from re-infection with rotavirus (RV), but very little is known about the mechanisms that induce IgA production during intestinal virus infections. Classical dendritic cells (cDCs) in the intestine can facilitate both T cell-dependent and -independent secretory IgA. Here, we show that BATF3-dependent cDC1, but not cDC2, are critical for the optimal induction of RV-specific IgA responses in the mesenteric lymph nodes. This depends on the selective expression of the TGFβ-activating integrin αvβ8 by cDC1. In contrast, αvβ8 on cDC1 is dispensible for steady state immune homeostasis. Given that cDC2 are crucial in driving IgA during steady state but are dispensable for RV-specific IgA responses, we propose that the capacity of DC subsets to induce intestinal IgA responses reflects the context, as opposed to an intrinsic property of individual DC subsets.

  • Road traffic noise reduction by vegetated low noise barriers in urban streets
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 9th European Conference on Noise Control, EURONOISE 2012, Prague, 10-13 June 2012. - 2226-5147. - 9788001050132 ; , s. 944-948
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Low-height noise barriers were shown to significantly reduce road traffic noise since these can be placed very close to either source or receiver. In this study, it is investigated to what extent such devices can be used in a street canyon setup. Full-wave numerical calculations have been carried out with the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) method, the PSTD (pseudo-spectral time-domain) method and BEM (boundary element method). In addition, a combined ray model and radiosity (CRR) model has been used. Numerical results of the different wave-based methods have been cross-validated with satisfying agreement. The limitations of an energy-based method like CRR have been pointed out. 4-lane road traffic in a 19.2-m wide street canyon with a realistic façade profile has been considered. In the predictions, low screens are considered, covered by vegetated wall substrate. Different arrangements of such screens have been assessed, for receivers on walkways and distributed over the building facades. Road traffic noise could be reduced on walkways at low vehicle speeds, even when both sources and receivers are located in the same reverberant space. Some shielding for higher elevated receivers along facades is predicted as well. Absorption on the low-height noise barriers was shown to be essential to obtain positive effects.

  • Using natural means to reduce surface transport noise during propagation outdoors
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Applied Acoustics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-682X .- 1872-910X. ; 92, s. 86-101
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews ways of reducing surface transport noise by natural means. The noise abatement solutions of interest can be easily (visually) incorporated in the landscape or help with greening the (sub)urban environment. They include vegetated surfaces (applied to faces or tops of noise walls and on buildings' façades and roofs), caged piles of stones (gabions), vegetation belts (tree belts, shrub zones and hedges), earth berms and various ways of exploiting ground-surface-related effects. The ideas presented in this overview have been tested in the laboratory and/or numerically evaluated in order to assess or enhance the noise abatement they could provide. Some in-situ experiments are discussed as well. When well designed, such natural devices have the potential to abate surface transport noise, possibly by complementing and sometimes improving common (non-natural) noise reducing devices or measures. Their applicability strongly depends on the available space reserved for the noise abatement and the receiver position.
