  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Nuclear physics midterm plan at Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal Plus. - 2190-5444. ; 138:8, s. 3-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The next years will see the completion of the radioactive ion beam facility SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) and the upgrade of the accelerators complex at Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL) opening up new possibilities in the fields of nuclear structure, nuclear dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, and applications. The nuclear physics community has organised a workshop to discuss the new physics opportunities that will be possible in the near future by employing state-of-the-art detection systems. A detailed discussion of the outcome from the workshop is presented in this report.

  • Conceptual design of the AGATA 2 pi array at LNL
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 1049
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1n,and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2 pi angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy gamma-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

  • Tooth Survival after Surgical or Nonsurgical Endodontic Retreatment: Long-term Follow-up of a Randomized Clinical Trial
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Endodontics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0099-2399. ; 44:10, s. 1480-1486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The aim of the study was to determine long-term tooth survival after endodontic retreatment and whether the presence of intraradicular posts influences the outcome. Methods: Ninety-five teeth were randomly assigned to surgical or nonsurgical endodontic retreatment. Forty-seven teeth in 45 patients were treated by conventional endodontic surgery and 48 teeth (47 patients) by nonsurgical retreatment, including the removal of intraradicular posts in 37 (77%). The outcome was tooth survival; follow-up continued until the tooth had been extracted, at least 10 years had elapsed since retreatment, the patient declined further follow-up, or the patient died. The Fisher exact test was used to analyze differences between the groups. Results: The median follow-up time was 10.1 years (range, 0.0-15.6 years). The overall survival rate was 76%, with no significant differences in long-term tooth survival between retreatment methods or the presence of an intraradicular post. The reasons for tooth extraction were related to the retreatment method. Vertical root fractures were significantly more frequent in the nonsurgical group when retreatment included post removal (P =.036). Conclusions: There was no significant difference in long-term tooth survival after surgical or nonsurgical retreatment. The presence of intraradicular posts did not affect long-term tooth survival, but for teeth with posts, those retreated nonsurgically were more frequently extracted because of vertical root fractures than those retreated surgically (P =.036). The major limitations of the study were a smaller sample size and the use of outmoded retreatment techniques.

  • Estimation of in vivo pulmonary microvascular and interstitial geometry using digital image analysis
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Microcirculation. - 1549-8719. ; 2:1, s. 27-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To determine microvascular diameter and perivascular interstitium thickness at the lung surface in the in situ, in vivo lung. METHODS: Microscopic images of the lung surface collected through a "pleural window" by a videocamera were digitized with a monochrome frame grabber (512 x 512 pixels, 8 bits per pixels) to be computer analyzed by image processing techniques. RESULTS: We found that the maxima in the distribution of the standard deviations of gray levels in adjacent neighbors 7 x 7 pixels wide identify the edges between the microvessel lumen and the surrounding perivascular interstitium. Furthermore, the maxima in the distribution of the standard deviation of the standard deviations of gray levels identify the edges between the perivascular interstitium and the lung tissue. CONCLUSIONS: This technique can be applied to microvessels ranging in diameter from 30 microns to 200 microns and perivascular interstitial thickness of the order of 10-150 microns. Our approach allows for the definition of microvascular geometry even for noisy images and represents an improvement compared to other edge detection methods. The proposed analytical procedure may provide a useful tool to study lung fluid balance and microvascular reactivity in the in situ lung in the normal state and in response to a variety of functional conditions.
