  • Building transformative capacities: integrating design research into port-city transformation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PORTUSplus. - 2039-6422. ; 9, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Port cities understood as complex human-environment systems are in an urgent need of complying with sustainability goals in the wake of the changing climate and the resulting economic and social consequences. Furthermore, such systems’ interdependencies are not fully understood, changes in them not fully predictable, and straight forward solutions to make them more fit for future challenges tackle part of the problem while generating other. Hence, port city development poses to any actor involved what researchers have identified since the 1970s as ‘a wicked problem’. Contemporary researchers engaged in the study of such problems increasingly recognise the inability of a single field of knowledge to generate pertinent answers, pointing at transdisciplinary science to be the only way out. In this paper we invoke basic tenets of transdisciplinary science to call for the inclusion of the discipline of landscape architecture into port-city studies. The disciplinary understanding of dynamic human-environment systems as ‘landscapes’ prompts the production of multi- and transdisciplinary knowledge, in particular through design research. Based on a case study of three design projects for transforming post-industrial port sites in Nantes (France), Gothenburg (Sweden), and Providence (U.S.A) the paper discusses how their design approaches (iterating, prototyping, simulating) could render planning procedures more dynamic. Furthermore, the paper theorise the interdependency  of place and site, project and process, practice and theory.

  • Ile de Nantes 2000-2010: a method for the meantime?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 11, s. 72-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this critique of the Ile de Nantes, the authors consider design as a means of intervening in the ever-ongoing dynamics of a site and judge change of space instead of state of space. They base their critique on a transformation analysis and offer an interpretation of site and design through micronarratives, from which they develop an evaluation of the plan-guide. As an alternative to the master plan that aims at static 'form' according to an urban model, they argue that the plan-guide, as a journey-form, supports urban 'trans-form-ation' beyond predefined models. After judging the plan-guide as particularly apt to steer the Ile de Nantes' first ten years of transition from old wharf to new city (the meantime), the authors point out some weaknesses that, if overcome, could enable the plan-guide to become a strategy for urban transformation based on an alternative framework.

  • Barcelona's Tres Turons: three hills and three cruelties
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 15, s. 56-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As uncertainty increasingly characterizes urbanization processes, critically addressing a design project as an isolated object after completion does not satisfy the need for criticism to reflect larger urban transformation projects during their unfolding. Using the example of the Tres Turons Park project in Barcelona, this critique attempts to stage criticism ‘in the meantime’, benefitting from a moment in which the project is on hold. The authors involved students of two consecutive master’s courses into the enquiry and the formulation of a grounded position. Proffered by methods extracted from literary theory and site thinking, the authors build an argument to challenge the boldness of the project’s ecological narrative, which they claim stands in the way of a more fruitful urban transformation. The acquired knowledge will be reintroduced into the ongoing process, to possibly allow for improvement of the project.
