    • Herein, we describe the synthesis and X-ray structure of a new heteropentanuclear complex (2) containing a [Fe2 IIIZn3 II(μ-OH)3] structural unit and the unsymmetrical ligand H2L2-et. The molecular structure of (2) shows that it is formed by a basic dinuclear [FeIII(μ-OH)ZnII(L2-et)] unit that is connected to a second dinuclear [FeIII(μ-OH)ZnII(L2-et)] unit through a hydroxo bridge while a third ZnII ion is coordinated by the pendant 1,2-ethanediamine groups of H2L2-et, resulting in the pentanuclear complex. Kinetic studies on the hydrolysis of the substrate 2,4-BDNPP (bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate) reveal that (2) shows diesterase activity. While the kinetic activity is comparable to the corresponding dinuclear FeIIIZnII complex containing the same ligand, the association with 2,4-BDNPP is significantly decreased.

    • The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has become one of the most useful techniques in molecular biology laboratories around the world. The purification of the target DNA product is, however, often challenging and most users are restricted to employing available commercial kits. The recent developments in mixed-mode chromatography have shown higher selectivity for a variety of nucleic acids containing samples. Capto Adhere is a mixed-mode chromatography resin that offers a high selectivity ligand and is here applied for the purification of amplified DNAs from PCR mixtures in a 10 minutes' single step, with yields above 95%, high linearity and precision for different concentrations.

    • The synthesis and characterization of three ligands and their respective heterobinuclear FeIIIZnII complexes were carried out, with the goal of mimicking the active site of purple acid phosphatases (PAPs). The ligand 2-hydroxy-3-(((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-(((2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)benzyl)(pyridin-2ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-5-methylbenzaldehyde (H2L2) was synthesized and its complex (FeIIIZnIIL2) was used as a basis for comparison with similar complexes previously published in the literature. Subsequent modifications were conducted in the aldehyde group, where 1,2-ethanediamine and 1,4-diaminobutane were used as side chain derivatives. The compounds FeIIIZnIIL2 (1), FeIIIZnIIL2-et (2) and FeIIIZnIIL2-but (3) were characterized by spectroscopic methods (infrared and UV-Vis) and ESI-MS spectrometry. Theoretical calculations were performed to provide insights into the complex structures with FeIIIZnII structures. The hydrolytic activity was analyzed both with the model substrate 2,4-BDNPP and with DNA catalyzed by complexes 1, 2 and 3.
