  • Anxiety and Vote Decision Making in Winner-Take-All Elections
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of Political Science-Revue Canadienne De Science Politique. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0008-4239. ; 47:3, s. 451-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study strategic voting behaviour in winner-take-all elections by means of an original study in which participants vote to collectively decide how much money should be given to an environmental NGO. We find that supporters of the most NGO-friendly party are reluctant to abandon it, despite its poor electoral viability. The poor electoral viability generates significant anxiety among its supporters and the level of anxiety at the time of voting influences their choice. Moderate levels of anxiety increase the probability of defection, but at high levels, anxiety has a paralyzing effect, making voters less likely to abandon their preferred choice.

  • Candidate Confidence and Electoral Appeal: An Experimental Study of the Effect of Nonverbal Confidence on Voter Evaluation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Political Science Research and Methods. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 2049-8470 .- 2049-8489. ; 3:1, s. 43-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nonverbal display of confidence is strongly associated with leadership and power. However, its importance for the persuasiveness of campaign messages has not been explored. How important is showing confidence for a political candidate’s ratings? How does confidence condition the effect of the quality of a candidate’s arguments? This article addresses these questions using an innovative experimental approach that makes it possible to better isolate the impact of the candidate’s nonverbal confidence and the quality of his message. While both of these aspects influence voters’ perceptions of the candidate’s electability and qualifications, the nonverbal dimension matters more when it comes to electability. This research contributes to the study of nonverbal communication in elections by expanding the focus of inquiry beyond the effect of pure emotions (happiness or anger) and facial traits.

  • Gender and electoral communication: How differences in non-verbal and verbal behavior lead to different evaluations of male and female politicians
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Annual American Political Science Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of an experiment in political communication that was designed to maximize what McDermott (2002) terms “experimental realism.” Participants are presented with a believable and engaging stimulus in the form of a candidate webcast. They view one of four different versions of a political speech delivered by a candidate, who is played by a male actor or by a female actor, depending on the treatment. Physiological response technology is used to capture participants’ unconscious reactions to the speech. The objective is to see how both the verbal and non-verbal behavior of male and female candidates influences how they are evaluated.

  • How anxiety affects support for third-placed parties in winner-take-all contexts
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Annual European Political Science Association Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When more than two parties compete, winner-take-all elections can potentially lead to significant policy losses for supporters of smaller parties who stand no chance of winning. However, despite the pressure to coordinate on a viable party, sizable minorities support third-placed parties with little or nil hope of winning. This paper aims to understand how anxiety at the time of the vote affects support for third parties in winner-take-all elections. Two hundred and seventy four participants recruited from the general voting population of Quebec took part in a voting experiment in 2013. Results suggest that anxiety increases the likelihood of switching only under specific conditions, and that its role depends on the object in the electoral context generating it. The paper proposes that the impact of anxiety should be reconceptualized to take more into account the difficulty of the decision making.

  • National but European? Visual manifestations of Europe in national parties’ Euromanifestos since 1979
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Party Politics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-0688 .- 1460-3683. ; 23:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The architects of the European project made a significant effort to create a set of symbols for the community (such as the EU flag, the map of Europe, the anthem, etc.), and recent evidence suggests that the main European values are nowadays spontaneously associated with them. We know little, however, about if and when national political actors choose to display these symbolic visual manifestations of Europe. In this study, we examine the presence of such symbols in parties’ Euromanifestos since the first European elections. The presence of EU community symbols is correlated with several factors, suggesting that the display is consistent both with a policy-driven and with a vote-seeking logic. We explore at length the implications of these results for future visual analysis of parties’ European messages and for the larger issue of European identity.

  • Surveys as a social experience: The lingering effects of survey design choices on respondents’ survey experience and subsequent optimizing behavior
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: WAPOR.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We propose that the choice of question format and information provided to the respondents in the course of a survey affects their behavior not just with respect to the immediate items following them, but also on further responses to questions in other domains. We hypothesize that the structure of the survey is socially construed, and when the survey choices are in line with the rules of social conversation, individuals perform better at later items, and are more satisfied with the survey. We find evidence consistent with this expectation from two experiments, but future research is needed to sort out the causal mechanism responsible for these effects.

  • Surveys as a social experience: The lingering effects of survey design choices on respondents' survey experience and subsequent optimizing behavior
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of public opinion research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0954-2892 .- 1471-6909. ; 28:4, s. 534-561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose that the design of earlier survey sections affects respondents’ response strategy to later unrelated questions. We hypothesize that the structure of the survey is socially construed, and when earlier survey design features are respectful of the rules of social conversation, individuals are more likely to optimize their responses later on and express more satisfaction in end-of-survey evaluations. We find evidence supporting these expectations from two experiments, but more research is needed to sort out the causal mechanism responsible for these effects.

  • Colour, texture, and luminance : Textile design methods for printing with electroluminescent inks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cultura e Scienza del Colore - Color Culture and Science Journal. - Milan. - 2384-9568. ; 15:1, s. 27-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Printable smart materials offer textile designers a range of changeable colours, with the potential to redefine the expressive properties of static textiles. However, this comes with the challenge of understanding how the printing process may need to be adapted for these novel materials. This research explores and exemplifies the properties and potential of electroluminescent inks as printable smart colours for textiles, in order to facilitate an understanding of designing complex surface patterns with electroluminescent inks. Three conventional textile print methods – colour mixing, halftone rasterization, and overlapping – have been investigated through experimental design research to expand the design potential of electroluminescent inks. The result presents a set of methods to create various color mixtures and design complex patterns. It offers recipes for print formulation and documents the outcomes, offering a new design resource for textile surface pattern designers to promote creativity in design, and provides fundamental knowledge for the creation of patterns on textiles using electroluminescent inks.
