  • Changes in gender equality? : Swedish fathers’ parental leave, division of childcare and housework
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1322-9400 .- 1839-3543. ; 20:1, s. 19-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is well known for its family policy and this study explores whether fathers’ parental leave is related to later division of childcare and housework. Two materials were used; a panel survey (2003, 2009) and an interview study (2008). Respondents in the survey had their first child between the waves and the interview-study focused on parents of 2–3 year olds. The survey is analyzed by logistic regression and the interviews by grounded theory. The results indicate that when fathers took long leave parents shared both household tasks and childcare more equally after the leave. Higher expectations of sharing childcare is related to a higher share of divided childcare once becoming parents, although it seems that some tasks are more often shared than others. When the father took long leave both parents mention that the child relates to the father as much as the mother in everyday life.

  • Barnafödande och familjepolitik i kristider
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Global kris - Håller välfärdssystemen. - Stockholm : Försäkringskassan. ; , s. 49-59

  • Do child-care characteristics influence continued child bearing in Sweden? : An investigation of the quantity, quality, and price dimension
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Social Policy. ; 14:4, s. 407-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We link population register data to information on regional child care characteristics in order to estimate the influence of the latter on second and third birth intensities of Swedish couples in 1997-98. Our analysis allows us to distinguish interactions and specific effects of different dimensions of the local day-care infrastructure, namely the provision rate, the child-to-staff-ratio, and the costs of care to parents. However, our results reveal no clear effects of these child care characteristics on Swedish couples’ continued childbearing. We interpret this absence of effects as a reflection of the generally very appropriate level of child care in Sweden, which is complemented by further supportive family policies. In such a context, moderate regional variations in the characteristics of day care may have no decisive impact on parents’ propensity to have another child.

  • Erwerbsstatus und Familienentwicklung in Schweden aus paarbezogener Perspektive
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Männer – Das ‚vernachlässigte’ Geschlecht in der Familienforschung. - : VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Wiesbaden. ; , s. 220-234

  • Social differentials in speed-premium effects in childbearing in Sweden
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Demographic Research. - 1435-9871. ; 14:4, s. 51-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, parents receive a parental-leave allowance of a high percentage (currently 80%) of their pre-birth salary for about a year in connection with any birth. If they space their births sufficiently closely, they avoid a reduction in the allowance caused by any reduced income earned between the births. The gain is popularly called a “speed premium”. In previous work we have shown that childbearing was sped up correspondingly. This is clear evidence of a causal effect of a policy change on childbearing behavior. In the present paper, we study how this change in behavior was adopted in various social strata of the Swedish population.

  • Arranging childcare in two Nordic countries : A comparison of ECEC start in Iceland and Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Research. - 2699-2337. ; 35, s. 471-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The study examines the age children in Iceland and Sweden start Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and how children’s starting age is associated with parents’ use of paid parental leave and their characteristics. Background: While children in Iceland have no legal rights to ECEC following the end of paid parental leave, in Sweden there is a continuum between paid parental leave and publicly subsidised ECEC. The leave period is also shorter in Iceland than in Sweden. The article addresses how these policy differences reflect the transition from paid parental leave to ECEC-start in the two countries.Method: The study uses survey data, collected among parents in Iceland and Sweden. Results: Children in Iceland have an earlier ECEC start than children in Sweden. This earlier start, however, has to do with the number of children being placed in family day care while waiting for a place in the public run preschools. Mothers in Iceland stretch the parental leave for a longer period than mothers in Sweden do, and in Iceland, there were variations in ECEC start depending on mothers’ labour force participation before childbirth and marital status, but not in Sweden. Conclusion: The lack of preschool at the end of paid parental leave creates challenges for a certain group of parents in Iceland, a situation parents in Sweden do not have to face.

  • Constructing parenthood in times of crisis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1322-9400 .- 1839-3543. ; 27:3, s. 420-435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Iceland was hit by a financial crisis in October 2008 and in the following year the ceiling on parental leave benefits was significantly lowered. The subsequent drop in fathers' uptake of parental leave raises questions on whether the crisis endangered gender equality when it comes to how parents arranged care for their new-born. The article explores changes in how parents arrange childcare with the use of paid parental leave and unpaid time off work by comparing findings from surveys among parents of firstborn children in 2003 and 2009. The results show that mothers of children born during the crisis were more likely to lengthen their time at home with the child, than those who had a child during an economic boom. This they did either by using the leave part-time, use vacation days or unpaid leave. It is argued that this could be a result of the fall in fathers' leave use during the crisis.
