  • Influence of electrode microstructure on the reactivity of Cu2Sb with lithium
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 52:17, s. 5339-5345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reactivity of lithium with Cu2Sb was recently described to be governed by displacement reactions of Cu similar to those occurring in Cu2.33V4O11. In order to complement the earlier work of Fransson et al., we have revisited the electrochemical reactivity of Cu2Sb with Li. Through a different arsenal of characterization techniques, we have emphasized the role of the particle size, electrode preparation and temperature on the reversibility of the electrochemical reaction. We have demonstrated that the structural reversibility of the Cu2Sb electrode can be obtained in two special cases: (1) when the particle size of Cu2Sb is small and when the powders are ball milled with carbon and (2) when Li2CuSb is used as the starting material and some Sb is lost from the electrode during charge.

  • Magnetic properties of (Fe1-xCox)(2)B alloys and the effect of doping by 5d elements
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 92:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have explored, computationally and experimentally, the magnetic properties of (Fe1-xCox)(2)B alloys. Calculations provide a good agreement with experiment in terms of the saturation magnetization and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy with some difficulty in describing Co2B, for which it is found that both full potential effects and electron correlations treated within dynamical mean field theory are of importance for a correct description. The material exhibits a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy for a range of cobalt concentrations between x = 0.1 and x = 0.5. A simple model for the temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropy suggests that the complicated nonmonotonic behavior is mainly due to variations in the band structure as the exchange splitting is reduced by temperature. Using density functional theory based calculations we have explored the effect of substitutionally doping the transition metal sublattice by the whole range of 5d transition metals and found that doping by Re or W elements should significantly enhance the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy. Experimentally, W doping did not succeed in enhancing the magnetic anisotropy due to formation of other phases. On the other hand, doping by Ir and Re was successful and resulted in magnetic anisotropies that are in agreement with theoretical predictions. In particular, doping by 2.5 at.% of Re on the Fe/Co site shows a magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy which is increased by 50% compared to its parent (Fe0.7Co0.3)(2)B compound, making this system interesting, for example, in the context of permanent magnet replacement materials or in other areas where a large magnetic anisotropy is of importance.

  • A Huntington disease-like neurodegenerative disorder maps to chromosome 20p.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 63:5, s. 1431-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disturbance, cognitive loss, and psychiatric manifestations. The disease is associated with a CAG trinucleotide-repeat expansion in the Huntington gene (IT15) on chromosome 4p16.3. One family with a history of HD was referred to us initially for predictive testing using linkage analysis. However, the chromosome 4p region was completely excluded by polymorphic markers, and later no CAG-repeat expansion in the HD gene was detected. To map the disease trait segregating in this family, whole-genome screening with highly polymorphic dinucleotide-, trinucleotide-, and tetranucleotide-repeat DNA markers was performed. A positive LOD score of 3.01 was obtained for the marker D20S482 on chromosome 20p, by two-point LOD-score analysis with the MLINK program. Haplotype analysis indicated that the gene responsible for the disease is likely located in a 2.7-cM region between the markers D20S193 and D20S895. Candidate genes from the mapping region were screened for mutations.

  • Intra-aortic and Intra-caval Balloon Pump Devices in Experimental Non-traumatic Cardiac Arrest and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cardiovascular Translational Research. - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1937-5387 .- 1937-5395. ; 16:4, s. 948-955
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) use during CPR has been scarcely studied. Intra-caval balloon pump (ICBP) may decrease backward venous flow during CPR. Mechanical chest compressions (MCC) were initiated after 10 min of cardiac arrest in anesthetized pigs. After 5 min of MCC, IABP (n = 6) or ICBP (n = 6) was initiated. The MCC device and the IABP/ICBP had slightly different frequencies, inducing a progressive peak pressure phase shift. IABP inflation 0.15 s before MCC significantly increased mean arterial pressure (MAP) and carotid blood flow (CBF) compared to inflation 0.10 s after MCC and to MCC only. Coronary perfusion pressure significantly increased with IABP inflation 0.25 s before MCC compared to inflation at MCC. ICBP inflation before MCC significantly increased MAP and CBF compared to inflation after MCC but not compared to MCC only. This shows the potential of IABP in CPR when optimally synchronized with MCC. The effect of timing of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) inflation during mechanical chest compressions (MCC) on hemodynamics. Data from12 anesthetized pigs.

  • Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta in zone I versus zone III in a porcine model of non-traumatic cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation : A randomized study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Resuscitation. - : Elsevier. - 0300-9572 .- 1873-1570. ; 151, s. 150-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in zone I increases systemic blood pressure during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while also obstructing the blood flow to distal organs. The aim of the study was to compare the effects on systemic blood pressure and visceral blood flow of REBOA-III (zone III, infrarenal) and REBOA-I (zone I, supraceliac) during non-traumatic cardiac arrest and CPR.METHODS: Cardiac arrest was induced in 61 anesthetized pigs. Thirty-two pigs were allocated to a hemodynamic study group where the primary outcomes were systemic arterial pressures and 29 pigs were allocated to a blood flow study group where the primary outcomes were superior mesenteric arterial (SMA) and internal carotid arterial (ICA) blood flow. After 7-8minutes of CPR with a mechanical compression device, REBOA-I, REBOA-III or no aortic occlusion (control group) were initiated after randomization.RESULTS: Systemic mean and diastolic arterial pressures were statistically higher during CPR with REBOA-I compared to REBOA-III (50mmHg and 16mmHg in REBOA-I vs 38mmHg and 1mmHg in REBOA-III). Systemic systolic, mean and diastolic arterial pressures were statistically elevated during CPR in the REBOA-I group compared to the controls. The SMA blood flow increased by 49% in REBOA-III but dropped to the levels of the controls within minutes. The ICA blood flow increased the most in REBOA-I compared to REBOA-III and the control group (54%, 19% and 0%, respectively).CONCLUSION: In experimental non-traumatic cardiac arrest and CPR, REBOA-I increased systemic blood pressures more than REBOA-III, and the potential enhancement of visceral organ blood flow by REBOA-III was short-lived.

  • The major bactericidal activity of human seminal plasma is zinc-dependent and derived from fragmentation of the semenogelins.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunology. - 1550-6606. ; 181:5, s. 3413-3421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the major roles of seminal plasma is to provide antimicrobial protection for the spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract. We found that the bactericidal activity of seminal plasma was highest after resolution of the seminal clot and that this antibacterial activity subsequently became greatly diminished. The antibacterial activity was derived from peptides generated by fragmentation of the semenogelins while the semenogelin holoproteins displayed no antibacterial activity. After ejaculation the semenogelin-derived peptides were fragmented to smaller and smaller fragments over time and thereby lost antibacterial activity. This paralleled the loss of antibacterial activity of whole seminal plasma both in vitro and after sexual intercourse. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the semenogelin-derived peptides generated in seminal plasma was strictly zinc-dependent both at neutral and low pH. These data provide novel roles for the resolution of seminal clots and for the high zinc concentration in human seminal plasma.
