  • Supply chain transparency as a consumer or corporate tool: The case of Nudie Jeans Co
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Consumer Policy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0168-7034 .- 1573-0700. ; 39:4, s. 377-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outsourcing has led both to the embedding of questionable sustainability practices in opaque supply chains and to anti-sweatshop challenges demanding more transparent supply chains. Previous research has argued that supply chain transparency can be both a consumer tool empowering consumers to pressure disclosing firms to improve sustainability conditions, and a corporate tool for increasing revenues. Based on a study of the transparency project of Swedish company Nudie Jeans, we demonstrate that consumers do not leverage transparency but that transparency improves consumer willingness to buy. In doing this, we contribute to the literature in two important ways. First, we provide one of the first, if not the first, studies of whether consumers in practice leverage increased supply chain transparency, challenging the previous research claim that supply chain transparency is a useful consumer tool. Second, we move beyond studies of purchasing intentions and willingness to buy in experimental settings and confirm that supply chain transparency is a useful corporate tool in practice. We conclude by discussing the policy implications of companies being able to use transparency to increase sales without subjecting themselves to increased consumer pressure.

  • Transparency for just seafood systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Solutions. - 2154-0896 .- 2154-0926. ; 7:4, s. 66-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Supply chain transparency and traceability have been forwarded as solutions to overfishing of the global oceans. Marine conservation funders, NGOs, and research partnerships are all jumping on board asking what traceability can do for environmental sustainability. Recent investigations into slavery at fisheries in Southeast Asia, whose products ended up on the shelves of American supermarkets, have also brought to light issues with forced labor in global fisheries. In what ways should we expect supply chain transparency and traceability to serve as possible solutions to also address social sustainability such as forced labor in fisheries production? Where transparency extends all the way to consumers, production improvements may be found. Similar movements in the garment industry are reviewed here to provide potential ways forward for seafood traceability. A future where all seafood is traceable and fisheries production practices are transparent could force a “race to the top,” where companies are forced to improve their practices for fear of reputational damage.

  • Beyond Decoupling: Unions and the Leveraging of Corporate Social Responsibility in Indonesia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Socio-Economic Review. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1475-1461 .- 1475-147X. ; 14:2, s. 231-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To address substandard working conditions in global value chains, companies have adopted private regulatory systems governing worker rights. Scholars agree that without onsite factory audits, this private regulation has limited impact at the point of production. Companies, however, audit only a subset of their suppliers, severely restricting their private regulatory attempts. Despite the significance of the placement of suppliers inside or outside firms’ “responsibility boundaries” and despite scholars’ having called for more research into how firms prioritize what suppliers to audit, few, if any, systematic studies have examined the topic. This is problematic, as the placement of firms’ responsibility boundaries determines what suppliers and workers are included in firms’ private regulatory attempts. Based on a study of 12 Swedish firms and the theory of moral disengagement, this paper starts to fill this research gap by exploring how firms’ responsibility boundaries are placed. The paper illustrates how firms’ responsibility boundary placement is best described as a patchwork with firms defining and delimiting their responsibilities differently. The paper also demonstrates that three supplier types (i.e., the worst, morally justified, and immediate suppliers) are particularly likely to be placed inside firms’ responsibility boundaries, while a fourth type (i.e., disregarded suppliers) is likely be placed outside.

  • Responsibility and neglect in global production networks: the uneven significance of codes of conduct in Indonesian factories
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Global Networks-a Journal of Transnational Affairs. - : Wiley. - 1470-2266 .- 1471-0374. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In response to anti-sweatshop activism, lead firms in global production networks (GPNs) have adopted voluntary corporate social responsibility commitments such as codes of conduct. Scholars have begun to examine whether and how these shape labour conditions at the point of production, but existing research either focuses on a small number of cases or lacks a control group of factories that are not exposed to codes of conduct. In addition, scholars have sometimes suggested that codes of conduct can only influence certain types of factory conditions, or that government labour inspection can accomplish as much or more than codes. These possibilities have rarely been assessed systematically. In this article, we analyse data on 192 electronics, apparel/textile and footwear factories in Indonesia and show how the significance of codes varies across issues. Our findings also suggest that codes and government labour inspection fill different niches, although neither guarantees decent factory conditions. The findings have implications for the study of labour agency' and the complementarity' of public and private governance in GPNs.

  • Green port dues: The case of hinterland transport
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business & Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395. ; 5, s. 85-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the economy becomes increasingly specialised and globalised, the importance of logistics also increases. For global transportation systems, seaports play a key role as transhipment hubs. As seaports incorporate and coordinate hinterland logistic activities within the activities of the port, the strategies they employ influence the decisions made by both local and global logistic service providers. From an environmental and social perspective, seaports are thus key actors in transportation systems, and many ports have also developed corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies. This paper examines one such strategy – green port dues – and shows how the integration of hinterland logistics and ports opens the possibility for differentiated port dues to be used as a tool to internalise external cost in the transportation systems and ensure the effectiveness of hinterland transport.
