    • Public libraries are more and more recognized to become partners in co-design and technology education, also aiming to bridge the digital divide. We see it as a great opportunity to expand the roles of public libraries even further, engaging citizens in co-design processes, improving existing public e-services and co-designing new services. That shift requires new roles taken by librarians, but also new processes, as well as new methods of development of e-services in the public sector. In PDC Place Nordic we explore this new role of libraries in participatory future making, engaging librarians, academics, practitioners, and different local communities. Events will take place in Copenhagen, Malmö, and Helsinki/Espoo.

  • Talkoo : A new paradigm for physical computing at school

    • Introducing physical computing into regular school classes is challenged by constraints of schedules and curricula structures, which do not allow for time-consuming electronics prototyping. We present a novel approach to prototyping with physical computing components with the Arduino-based TALKOO kit: It comprises hardware modules, a visual IDE and prototyping material. Sensor and actuator modules are pluggable and do not require soldering and prior knowledge in electronics. The components have the ability to "talk" back to the visual IDE and to a learning analytics system. A new paradigm for visual programming maps physical modules onto virtual representations on screen making programming more intuitive. The TALKOO kit expands the field of application of physical computing for children in regular school contexts. Preliminary evaluation results show that children were able to build elaborative prototypes within an hour.

  • Anti-bacterial action of irradiated glucose

    • It is shown that ?irradiated glucose has a strong, anti-bacterial action on Pseudomonas sp. 128. Irradiation of the water solution of glucose is more effective than irradiation of modifications of crystalline glucose. Part of the anti-bacterial effect remains after storage of the irradiated solution for six days at 20°c. After treatment with irradiated glucose the surviving bacteria are found to be more resistant to a repeated treatment. The bactericidal action of irradiated glucose increases with decreasing ph of the test solution, and was abolished by added catalase. The possible nature of the anti-bacterial factor(s) in irradiated glucose is discussed. © 1964 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.

    • This poster discusses work on the design of a visual-based programming language for physical computing and mobile tools for the learners to actively document and reflect on their projects. These are parts of a European project that is investigating how to generate, analyze, use and provide feedback from analytics derived from hands-on learning activities. Our aim is to raise a discussion about how learning analytics, intelligence, and the role of learners’ documenting their work can provide richer opportunities for supporting learning and teaching.

  • Kunskapsbaserad teknik för kompetensutveckling i byggsektorn : en forskningsrapport från Sveriges Byggindustrier

    • Syftet med rapporten är att undersöka kunskapsförsörjningen inom byggsektorn på tre nivåer, gymnasium, yrkeshögskola och universitet/högskola samt en industriell partner. Projektet genomfördes med intervjuer, workshops och enkäter styrda av en grundlig litteraturstudie som tittat på aktuell forskning inom utbildning och pedagogik. Resultaten från projektet visar att lärare och elever/studenter har digitala kompetensen, men det finns utrymme för förbättringar av lärandematerial och processer. Dessutom visar resultaten från industrin ett starkt intresse för bättre utnyttja informationsteknik för kompetensutveckling. Betänkandet pekar på att det krävs fortsatt utveckling för en förbättra utbildning inom byggbranschen.
