  • Vältalighetens dubbla ansikte : Två svenska 1600-talsorationer om talekonstens politiska användning: Text – kontext – intertext. Inledning Nils Ekedahl. Textinledning, utgåva och översättning Annika Ström

  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Här presenteras två latinska orationer, hållna i Uppsala 1654.

    • This dissertation emphasises the importance of the Swediesh priesthood during the 1600s, when the Kingdom was developing into an early modern state. I am looking from a new perspective, based on the Lutheran Right Doctrine, but concerning a way of thinking in and about the society. This way of thinking was characterised by an ideology, an ideology transmitted by the clergy and consequently making them necessary to the aims of political power. I have been pursuing an overarching idea within a field rich in sources and authorities to be found amongst priests in all their contexts. In questions of history and theology I have let specialised researchers have their say or I have stressed my own differing opinion based on the perspective of my own inquiry. The phrase from Corinthians 1.14: "Let all things be done decently and in order", introducing the Church Regulations of 1571, provided a long-lasting confirmation of the priesthood´s´ own leadership and authority of and within the church. The 1593 Uppsala meeting of representatives of all the country´s estates took the famous decision of confessional unity in Church and State. Unity provided the theological and ideological premises for the clergy, and especially the episcopacy, to seize the leadership of society in a way that led to opposition, not only from the reigning king but also from the nobility. Furthermore the very first paragraph of the first 1634 Consitution of Sweden confirmed the Lutheran Confession and Catechism as part of the fundamental law. In 1650 privileges were finally awarded to the clergy by the Queen who, in addition to very distinctly recommending consensus in any kind of decision, also strengthened the clergy´s position in community by endowing them the authority of legal leadership. Consensus was defined in different ways according to context and did not imply democracy.Consequently the church was able to construct a new professionalism for the priesthood, based on the Right Doctrine, scholarship, education of their own members and on instruction in the catechism. All of which implied morality, responsibility, workning obediently and cooperating in a peaceful society under the watchful eyes of God and his ministers. Simultaneously, the Kingdom began to take a modern shape through organising its activities and power in a centralised bureaucracy. Uniformity, not consensus, became the keyword. It is important to remember however, throughout the 1600s the clergy maintained the conviction that there were different realms and hierarchies in this world, the secular and the spiritual, Moses and Aaron, together in God´s Israel. But the men of the church usually took God´s congregation to mean Sweden with its imperial conquests as well as each parish community. However the King`s Church Law of 1686 made the priests officials of the State. Consequently this dissertation discusses the reception of that Law.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how Swedish-language printed panegyrics of Karl XI and Karl XII, written in connection with the 1697 royal succession, functioned as a channel for political communication in the Swedish Baltic empire. The material comprises 34 Swedish-language printed items from Sweden, Finland, and Swedish Pomerania. The analyses focus on features of both content and form in terms of commonly applied topics and characteristics typical of the genre. The analyses demonstrate how panegyrics surrounding the royal succession varied in regard to geographical origin, individual authors, choice of format, content, audience and presentational situation. To elucidate the variation within the genre, texts in octavo, folio and patent folio formats are analysed. The first analytical section of the thesis, chapter 3, contains analyses of texts in these formats as well as depictions of events in Stockholm in connection with the parliament and the funeral. Chapter 4 illuminates the components of the coronation tributes, and coronation homages to Karl XII are examined. Chapter 5 treats panegyrics from Sweden, outside the capital, and from Finland. Chapter 6 analyses some panegyric texts from the Baltic provinces and the German possessions, and the rhetorical staging of the royal succession is depicted in these areas as well. The texts analysed were part of the public sphere of the day, evincing propagandistic features, including similar topics and reasoning. Despite this, they differ in terms of implicit argumentation and other matters. Some promote the Carolingian empire, cast suspicion on and threaten opponents and defend Karl XII’s early accession. Others stress issues unrelated to royal power or express wishes regarding the new king’s future exercise of power. The analyses bring to light a number of symbolically significant places and buildings, as well as various horizontal and vertical positions that characterise the bards, any sponsors they might have had, and the intended audience. Thus, the dissertation can be said to deal with a rhetorical geography in which the Swedish Baltic empire constitutes a shared rhetorical space.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the perception of Sweden as a counterpart to the Israelite people in the Old Testament played an important part in the construction of Swedish nationhood. The widespread use of biblical parallels in the political discourse of the period has been recognized for a long time, but in recent research the significance of the parallels has been questioned by scholars who have described them as merely a kind of commonplace religious phraseology, with no further implications. In this chapter however, I will argue that the parallels must be taken seriously and that the Jerusalem code provided a cornerstone of the rhetorical construction of early Swedish nationhood. Central to my argument is that the identification with the Israelites should be understood as figural in character, rather than genealogical or translational, and that the Jerusalem code offered a rhetorically flexible mode of representation that united past, present, and future as well as the individual and the society.
