  • Assisted eating as a communicative activity : A framework of joint attention and co-ordinated embodied actions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Interactional Research in Communication Disorders/Equinox. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-5111 .- 2040-512X. ; 14:1, s. 79-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: This study aims to further the understanding of communication involving people with late-stage dementia by highlighting assisted eating as an interactive joint activity. Assisted eating is, on the surface, primarily a care activity with the purpose of feeding the assisted person and thereby facilitating nutritional uptake. Helping someone to eat requires, nevertheless, fine-grained communication and co-ordination of both attention and embodied actions.Method: Using video recordings where a person with late-stage dementia is provided with assistance to eat, we show how assisted eating is sequentially organized into smaller, local communicative projects, and how each project’s completion is contingent upon the temporal co-ordination of the participants’ attention and embodied actions. Results: The analysis shows how actions necessary to carry out the eating (e.g., manipulating the food, bringing the food to the mouth) are also inherently communicative and achieved through an embodied participation framework.Discussion/conclusion: Our findings show that while the caregiving staff perform most of the actions required in the assisted eating, the person with dementia is a central agent whose actions – displays of engagement and disengagement – are decisive for the progression of the eating activity and play central roles in the interactive achievement of the activity

  • Assisted eating in late-stage dementia : Intercorporeal interaction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - Oxford, United Kingdom : Elsevier BV. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we argue that investigating and learning about agentive abilities of people living with late-stage dementia requires a theoretical framework that focuses on the use of bodily resources in interpersonal interaction (i.e., intercorporeality) for performing joint activities rather than on solely the use of spoken language. Assisted eating, which involves people living with late-stage dementia and professional carers, is taken as an empirical example. The study is based on observations and video recordings of occasions of assisted eating involving five people with late-stage dementia in a residential elder care home; one of these people is used as an example in this paper. The analysis shows that assisted eating is performed as a joint intercorporeal activity. The participants create joint attentional space and a common space of action for their bodily movements when they give and receive food. The participants engaged in the activity coordinate their bodily moves with each other. The analysis (1) demonstrates that the collaboration between people living with late-stage dementia and nurses is based on practical interdependent and co-operative bodily actions. (2) This makes it possible to better understand agency in terms of intercorporeal interaction displayed by people living with late-stage dementia. (3) The agency demonstrated in intercorporeal interaction is thus considered to be shared and distributed across bodies and requires support to be interactionally achieved. (4) The intercorporeal interaction as grounds for agency not only calls on other participants to note and honor the agency of the person with dementia that is still evident in embodied interaction, but also invites others to support people with dementia to claim and display their agency in social interactions and joint activities.

  • Assessments in assisted eating activities : The case of supporting people in late-stage dementia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communication & Medicine. - Sheffield, United Kingdom : Equinox Publishing. - 1612-1783 .- 1613-3625. ; 17:2, s. 134-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study deals with assessment as an interactional practice in assisted eating activities involving people with late-stage dementia (here Alzheimer’s disease) in an elderly care home. The dataset for the study consists of video recordings of 26 occasions of eating activities. We investigate the use of embodied, vocal and verbal assessments (e.g., headshakes, nods and gustatory ‘mmm’) together with evaluative terms (e.g., ‘good’ or ‘great’) in three consecutive phases in these activities: ‘introducing the mealtime activity’, ‘offering the food’ and ‘receiving the food’. Drawing on multimodal analysis of interaction, we analyze three mealtime events, in which we show how assessments are issued by caregivers more often in interaction with a person with dementia who appears less engaged in the activity compared to a more engaged resident. Moreover, the analysis explicates how assessments fit in with the overall organization of the activity and are issued in a timely fashion when the food is introduced and brought close to the lips of the person with dementia, and when it is accepted. The findings show that assessments are used not only to share an evaluation of e.g., food or the action of the person with dementia, but also to manage the assisted eating activity. Assessments seem to be used distinctively (1) to build joint attention in the eating activity and (2) to encourage the assisted person to submit to/continue the activity of eating.

  • Transferring from wheelchair to bed : (Re)subjectifying and partner-positioning a person with late-stage dementia in the care task
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 1473-3250 .- 1741-3117. ; 21:6, s. 1185-1210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Assisting people into bed is in many ways centered around the person's body-it is the body that needs to be moved and laid down. As a result, the body's material and tangible properties-the body as an object-are foregrounded. This study demonstrates, however, how care workers, when assisting a person with late-stage dementia into bed, maintain a balance between handling the body of the care-recipient as an object of care and including the person as a co-participant in the activity, highlighting the participatory role of the person, and thus positioning the care-recipient as a partner in the activity of the transfer. Drawing on multimodal conversation analysis, and presenting two cases of transfer, the study shows that the activity of moving into bed is usually organized into three consecutive sequences of (a) preparing the move, (b) transfer proper, and (c) adjusting the resident in bed. In every phase of the activity, caregivers, through careful and coordinated embodied and verbal interactions, manage the care-recipient not only as an object of care and her body as an objective body but also as a lived body, highlighting the agentive and subjective aspects of the resident's personhood. The results of the study point to care workers' skillful handling of interactional resources to deal with the social sensitivity of moving assistance-dependent residents to their bed through partner-positioning the resident, and thus (re)subjectifying the person with late-stage dementia despite the objectifying aspects of the transfer.

  • Säker framkomlighet : sammanfattande slutrapport 2015
  • 2016

  • Developing a pragmatic evaluation of ICTs for older adults with cognitive impairment at scale : the IN LIFE experience
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - Heidelberg, Germany : Springer. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 21:1, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implementing information and communications technology (ICT) at scale requires evaluation processes to capture the impacton users as well as the infrastructure into which it is being introduced. For older adults living with cognitive impairment, thisrequires evaluation that can accommodate diferent levels of cognitive impairment, alongside input from family and formalcaregivers, plus stakeholder organisations. The European Horizon 2020 project INdependent LIving support Functions forthe Elderly (IN LIFE) set out to integrate 17 technologies into a single digital platform for older people living with cognitive impairment plus their families, care providers and stakeholders. The IN LIFE evaluation took place across six nationalpilot sites to examine a number of variables including impact on the users, user acceptance of the individual services andthe overall platform, plus the economic case for the IN LIFE platform. The results confrmed the interest and need amongolder adults, family caregivers, formal caregivers and stakeholders, for information and communications technology (ICT).Relative to the baseline, quality of life improved and cognition stabilised; however, there was an overall reluctance to payfor the platform. The fndings provide insights into existing barriers and challenges for adoption of ICT for older peopleliving with cognitive impairment.

  • Couples living with dementia managing conflicting knowledge claims
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Discourse Studies. - : Sage Publications. - 1461-4456 .- 1461-7080. ; 23:2, s. 191-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This conversation analytic study investigates how couples manage conflicting knowledge claims when one of the persons has dementia (PWD). The data are video-recordings of 16 couples talking with a third party. The analysis focuses on the negotiation of epistemic rights, more precisely how partners initiate repair and correct claims made by the PWD on matters belonging to the latter’s epistemic domain. We identified three main practices for correcting the PWD: (1) correcting the statement, thereby claiming epistemic authority for oneself and denying it to the PWD, (2) inviting the PWD to self-correct, thereby attributing some epistemic authority to the PWD, and (3) disagreeing and providing reasons for one’s alternative claim, establishing a more symmetric epistemic gradient. The PWDs responses to the corrections displayed different degrees of acceptance, ranging from self-denigration to resistance and insistence.

  • Effects of a digital reminiscing intervention on people with dementia and their care-givers and relatives
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - Cambridge, United Kingdom : Cambridge University Press. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 43:9, s. 1983-2000
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dementia is a source of growing concern globally, and often impacts on social and commu-nicative functioning. INdependent LIving Support Functions for the Elderly (IN LIFE) was aproject carried out within the European Commission Research and Innovation programmeHorizon 2020 that resulted in the development of two digital communication aids for rem-iniscence intervention for elderly people with dementia and their communication partners. The purpose of this intervention study was to investigate the effects on quality of life forpeople with dementia when using these aids. People with dementia (N = 118) and their for-mal care-givers (N = 187) and relatives (N = 9) were given the communication aids for a per-iod of 4–12 weeks. To assess a range of outcomes, questionnaires developed within theproject were used along with the EQ-5D (European Quality of Life – 5 Dimensions) andQoL-AD (Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease) questionnaires. Quality of life improvedamong people with dementia when measured using EQ-5D ( p < 0.05). There was also a cor-relation between the impact on the participants’ health and wellbeing, the carers’ rating ofthe usefulness of the digital communication aids and the care-givers’ satisfaction with usingtechnology ( p < 0.05). These results indicate that digital communication aids may be usefulin social interaction where one partner has dementia.
