  • The Magic Bowl : a Tangible User Interface for Configuration of Interactive Environments
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on the Design of Cooperative system (COOP04).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes our work with the design and deployment of a tangible user interface for controlling an interactive workspace. Our intention was to design a user interface that makes it possible to use the room without focusing on the technology behind. We found that the problems are especially at the beginning of a work session when a group enters a totally shut-down workspace and have to spend valuable time starting and configuring every device before they are able to start working. The Magic Bowl makes it possible to quickly start the interactive workspace with a personalized configuration.

  • Marine engineering education program development due to CDIO concept
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 20th Commemorative Annual General Assembly, AGA 2019 - Proceedings of the International Association of Maritime Universities Conference, IAMUC 2019. ; , s. 302-312
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes and analyses the education development process of the BSc Marine Engineering Program at Chalmers University of Technology. The goal has been to advance to both fulfil the STCW Manila Amendments as well as to implement the CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) approach for engineering education. The aim was to develop a program with emphasis on fundamentals in the context of marine engineering with integrated learning of general engineering skills that support the students' development of knowledge, skills and understanding for their future careers. External and internal evaluation as well as feedback from stakeholders give much credit to the developments and verify that the developments are in line with the aims as well as the expectations of an up-to-date marine engineering education.

  • Tools for Designing Mobile Interaction with the Physical Environment in Outdoor Lessons
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mobile technologies are increasingly being used to support students in outdoor learning activities. For instance, in a growing number of research projects, smartphones and positioning technologies are being used to support students in exploring the natural environment. However, previous research has identified challenges with the introduction of mobile technology into outdoor lessons. One fundamental challenge is that interaction with mobile technology in outdoor lessons may distract students from interacting with the physical environment. In this thesis this challenge is approached from the perspective of human-computer interaction, guided by the following research question: How can we design, evaluate, and reflect on mobile technology for interacting with the physical environment in outdoor lessons? The thesis presents four design cases on outdoor geometry and biology lessons, which act as probes for developing conceptual design tools. The design cases were developed through a concept-driven design approach and evaluated on field tests with primary school students. Future workshop and Interaction analysis were the main methods used. The results of the field tests suggest that mobile technology needs to be designed to orientate students in their interaction with the physical environment. In line with the concept-driven design approach, the thesis proposes three design tools. The design tools proposed are: Design guidelines that are specific enough for guiding the design of mobile technology for outdoor lessons, a Design model for designing and evaluating mobile technology for outdoor lessons, and Design concepts for reflecting on the placement of mobile technology in outdoor lessons. The design tools are proposed as tools for researchers and designers to take the challenge of distraction into account in designing mobile technology for outdoor lessons.

  • Marine student's information literacy skills- a case study of marine engineer's bachelor thesis at Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 21st Annual General Assembly, IAMU AGA 2021 - Proceedings of the International Association of Maritime Universities ,IAMU Conference. ; , s. 122-135
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What do the marine engineer students remember from their library instruction sessions in information literacy (IL) when it is time for them to write their bachelor thesis? The need for IL in the education is important due to the students coming work life. The skills to be an engineer are so much more than just technical knowledge. To state this, we have worked with integrated learning sequences and development due to the Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO) concept. Within in this specific subject we will highlight the need of writing and IL. CDIO main goals can be closely connected to IL especially about how to lead the operation of processes and understand research impact and development of the society (Crawley et al., 2014). During the autumn semester in 2017 we asked the marine engineers to fill in a one-minute paper to reflect over the library lecture. In the spring of 2021, the students wrote their bachelor thesis and we wanted to look at how much they remember from their previous lecture. With a short survey after they finished their theses we wanted to find out if they had used their information literacy skills during these years as students.
