- Opportunities for crime are a central component in many explanatory models for criminality. In research on white-collar crime, this emerges particularly through emphasis on the importance of social position for the possibility of carrying out crime. This article argues that Goffman's ideas about barriers and back regions should be used to specify how social positions strengthen the opportunities for committing economic crime. The basic insight is that opportunities arise in situations where people by virtue of their positions build up barriers that prevent others from foreseeing and becoming aware of what goes on. An empirical case analysis clarifies the concepts' theoretical content, empirical relevance, and applicability to the research area. Further developments of this approach are discussed in conclusion.

- This book looks at economic crime in the banking and finance sector, analysing actual criminal cases coming to light in the last twenty years. The reader is presented with a wealth of examples from the world of banking, brokerage, and foreign exchange trading, encountering bank managers who embezzle from client accounts, currency traders stealing from the company vault, and options brokers bent on hiding their losses, shrouding majormoney transactions in secrecy, and trying to get away with insider dealing. What is common to all of them is their betrayal of the trust given them to manage other people’s money, and this in a time when the role of banking and finance in the economy has only become only more prominent and people’s dependence on various finance professionals for their personal well-being and future security keeps growing. Departing from the popular notion of greed as a cause of economic crime, the book tackles the question of what makes those working in the world of finance cross the threshold into crime, what kind of motives impel their actions, and what sort of opportunities they take advantage of in acting upon these motives. In the cases studied, the criminal activity was more than mere greed driven by a perceived need to secure one’s status at workplace or among friends, or the desire keep one’s business or other life project alive. Other people’s money was used as a means by which to hide the problems brought on by bad business deals, mounting debts, or the inability to maintain the kind of lifestyle one wanted, in a situation where the agonies of having to come out in the open with one’s problems to enlist the assistance of others only kept increasing. These problems were perceived to be so troublesome and awkward as to give rise to the fear that, if revealed, they would be seen as shortcomings serious enough to lead to a loss of the confidence of others, friendships, one’s job, or a highly prized property. The study shows how the fear of losing face before others and low confidence in the availability of help and support for one’s life prioritizings may in precarious situations lead to crime when combined with a belief in one’s own ability to make use of the technical systems at hand, hide the mistakes, and manipulate the environment. Such optimism is often the result of having won the trust of one’s colleagues, clients, and others in the environment who, moreover, may also have little or no understanding or control of the work tasks being performed, in an operation in which internal controls and administration, too, have been neglected. All this creates room for hidden actions, enabling the crime to be committed out of sight. In the book, we are shown how this opportunity is then taken advantage of by old and young, managers and staff, men and women alike, whether in prestigious brokerage firms and big-city banks or in their out-of-way branches, sometimes to get away with a couple of thousand, sometimes to make off with millions.

- Perceived self-efficacy is often held to be the most focal mechanism of human agency. It has shown strong potential to explain action in multiple areas highly relevant to understanding crime, at least when the concept is formulated in close connection with the conditions that characterize the criminal acts it is supposed to explain. This article introduces the concept in the context of white-collar crime. To advance our understanding of how opportunities for such crime work, self-efficacy is defined with regard to one’s ability to control others’ impression of financially relevant information, or what is called dramaturgical self-efficacy. The presentation of this concept and its various elements is illustrated with contemporary empirical cases of white-collar crime and is preceded by a discussion of how opportunity structures and perceived self-efficacy have been understood in previous research relevant to the field. The article also discusses how the concept can be further developed with regard to the relationship between motivation and opportunity for white-collar crime.

- This article examines a general trend towards the ‘decentring’ of the policing of economic and White-collar crime in Sweden in recent decades. As a theoretical point of departure, we discuss how the ‘decentred policing’ concept can link the theoretical approaches of regulation and policing studies. We then analyse five empirical cases in which private actors have been given duties and incentives to report others’ crimes, in order to give a detailed account of the expansion and effects of the decentring of business and finance policing. The five cases concern the policing of bankruptcy crimes, money laundering, company management crimes, market abuse and insider dealings, and illegal cartels. The article ends by discussing some possible causes and consequences of this tendency.
