    • Colour and light have largely been considered as belonging to two different fields of knowledge, having disparate theoretical, terminological and methodological traditions. This creates a ground for misunderstandings and obstructs a fruitful interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration. A survey over international research literature from 2006 -2011 shows that there has been only little research on the spatial interaction between colour and light, but that the interest for this area has recently increased. The interdisciplinary Nordic research project SYN-TES: Human colour and light synthesis. Towards a coherent field of knowledge was carried out during 2010-11. Colour and light experts from Nordic universities and companies investigated different aspects of the spatial interaction between colour and light and its importance for human beings. This paper deals with the general learnings from the process. Specific results are presented in other papers at this conference.

  • Småskalig biobränsleeldning i tätbebyggda områden. Verktyg för tillståndsgivning på kommunal nivå

    • För att klara miljömålet 'Begränsad klimatpåverkan' kommer en övergång att krävas från uppvärmning med fossila bränslen till biobränslen. En övergång till biobränslen kan även förväntas i områden där uppvärmning idag sker med el, direktverkande eller i vattenburna system. I tätbebyggda småhusområden kan en ökad biobränsleeldning ge ett betydande bidrag till överskridande av miljökvalitetsnormer. För att uppfylla miljökvalitetsnormer, och på sikt även miljömålet 'Frisk Luft', krävs dock att en ökad biobränsleintroduktion görs med sådan teknik att inte luftkvaliteten försämras. I detta arbete har kommunerna en viktig roll. Föreliggande projekt har innefattat att ta fram en arbetsgång och visa på viktigt underlag för att bistå kommunerna i deras arbete med att bedöma i vilka områden en ökad förbränning av biobränsle kan vara acceptabel. Underlaget omfattar såväl energibehovsutredningar, energiplaner och data över utsläpp till luft från olika källor i kommunen, som lagar, föreskrifter och policies. För att koppla utsläppen till halter i luft behövs även spridningsmodellering. Den föreslagna arbetsgången har testats i ett verkligt bostadsområde. De beräkningarna som gjorts av luftföroreningshalter visar att det kan uppstå problem i form av höga halter vid en kraftig utökning av biobränsleeldning, såvida inte förbränningen sker på ett miljömässigt acceptabelt sätt. Ett förslag till hur man på kommunal nivå kan hantera förfrågningar och anmälningar om ökad biobränsleeldning har utarbetats och presenteras i rapporten. Det viktigt att kommunerna har tillgång till dessa verktyg för att kunna göra nödvändiga bedömningar samtidigt som de får möjlighet att, vid risk för höga föroreningshalter, kunna påverka installationen av lokala eldstäder i kommunen

  • Non-invasive evaluation of the effect of metoprolol on the atrioventricular node during permanent atrial fibrillation

    • The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in AV nodal properties during administration of metoprolol, using a novel ECG-based method for parameter estimation. The AV nodal parameters account for the probability of an impulse not passing through the fast pathway, the absolute refractory periods of the slow and fast pathways (aRPs and aRPf), representing the functional refractory period, and related prolongation in the respective refractory periods. Twenty patients (age 71±8 years, 14 men) with permanent AF from the RATe control in Atrial Fibrillation (RATAF) database were included in this study. Recordings during baseline and metoprolol administration were analyzed. Furthermore, simulated RR series were generated mimicking metoprolol administration. During metoprolol administration, aRP was significantly prolonged in both pathways (aRPs: 342±39 vs. 408±81 ms, p<0.001; aRPf: 432±74 vs. 527±83 ms, p<0.001). Similar results were found for the simulated RR series: both aRPs and aRPf were significantly prolonged with metoprolol. The AV nodal parameters reflect expected changes after metoprolol administration, i.e., a prolongation in functional refractory period. The simulations suggest that aRP may serve as an estimate of the functional refractory period.

  • A total turbulent energy closure model for neutrally and stably stratified atmospheric boundary layers

    • This paper presents a turbulence closure for neutral and stratified atmospheric conditions. The closure is based on the concept of the total turbulent energy. The total turbulent energy is the sum of the turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent potential energy, which is proportional to the potential temperature variance. The closure uses recent observational findings to take into account the mean flow stability. These observations indicate that turbulent transfer of heat and momentum behaves differently under very stable stratification. Whereas the turbulent heat flux tends toward zero beyond a certain stability limit, the turbulent stress stays finite. The suggested scheme avoids the problem of self-correlation. The latter is an improvement over the widely used Monin–Obukhov-based closures. Numerous large-eddy simulations, including a wide range of neutral and stably stratified cases, are used to estimate likely values of two free constants. In a benchmark case the new turbulence closure performs indistinguishably from independent large-eddy simulations.

    • We investigate the behaviour of the recently proposed shear-dependent turbulent length-scale in the neutrally stratified surface layer. It is found that close to ground, this shear-dependent length-scale is proportional to height, and thus, equivalent to the law of the wall. We speculate that the law of the wall could be just a special case of applying the shear-length to near-surface flows.

  • Mesoscale Simulations of Atmospheric Flow in Complex Terrain

    • The MIUU mesoscale model was further developed, in order to include information on large-scale atmospheric fields from global or regional atmospheric climate- and weather-prediction models. For this purpose, a new lateral boundary condition was developed and implemented into the model. The new lateral boundary condition is a combination of two existing conditions, namely the flow relaxation scheme and the tendency modification scheme.Tests indicated that an optimum lateral boundary configuration would be obtained with moderate to strong flow relaxation at higher levels, small flow relaxation at lower levels (within the atmospheric boundary layer), upstream advection at the outermost 4 grid points, and 6% horizontal grid stretching starting at a substantial distance from the lateral boundaries. The flow relaxation coefficients should be specified carefully, in order to minimize the reflection of all kinds of waves at the lateral boundaries.The summer thermal low in the mean-sea-level pressure field over North America is traditionally analyzed over the northern end of the Gulf of California. The position of this low is influenced by the application of the so-called plateau correction in obtaining mean-sea-level pressure values from highly elevated stations in North America. A model study indicated that the low should be located approximately 450 km to the north and somewhat to the east of the above location. A statistical comparison of model results from two mesoscale models against upper-air and surface measurements from several sites was carried out. Statistical methods, however, give only an insufficient picture of overall model performance. A comparison between predicted and measured tracer concentrations could be used to better evaluate the overall performance of different models.Sound propagation in the atmosphere was predicted in a mountain valley using a mesoscale atmospheric model together with a sound propagation model. This suggests that forecasts of sound propagation should be possible in future.

  • Drug effect evaluation during permanent atrial fibrillation using an AV-node model

    • The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the effect of rate control drugs on the AV node characteristics during atrial fibrillation (AF) using a model-based approach. A statistical model of the AV nodal function is employed, defined by parameters which characterize the arrival rate of atrial impulses, the refractoriness of the fast and the slow AV-nodal pathway and the probability of atrial impulse to pass through either of the two pathways. The RATAF (RATe control in Atrial Fibrillation) study database consists of recordings from 60 patients with permanent AF at baseline and on treatment with metoprolol, verapamil, diltiazem and carvedilol, respectively. The resulting model parameter estimates indicate that the refractory period of the slow pathway as well as that of the fast pathway increased significantly during treatment with all four drugs. The results suggest that the proposed AV-node model can be used for non-invasive evaluation of the effect of rate control drugs.
