  • The response rate in postal epidemiological studies in the context of national cultural behaviour
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 10th International Conference on Healthy Buildings 2012. - 9781627480758 ; , s. 1429-1434
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of national cultural differences on the response rate, obtained in questionnaire based epidemiological studies on allergy and asthma, performed in Sweden (DBH) and Bulgaria (ALLHOME). The two studies used one and the same methodology, but the obtained response rate was different: 78.8% in DBH and 34.5% in ALLHOME. The differences in the obtained response rate and the reasons for these differences were analyzed on the basis of the Hofstede's cultural dimensions' indexes, which clearly show the distinction in the national cultural behaviour of people in Sweden and Bulgaria. It was found that national culture could strongly influence the response behaviour of people in epidemiological studies and Hofstede's indexes can be useful tool when designing and performing epidemiological studies, and in particular - questionnaire surveys.

  • Organoselenium-Substituted Poly(p-phenylenevinylene)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Heteroatom Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 1042-7163 .- 1098-1071. ; 16:7, s. 656-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new type of conjugated polymer, organoselenium substituted poly(p-pheylenevinylene) (PPV), was synthesized from the corresponding alkylselenenyl p-xylylene dibromide via a Gilch route using potassium tert-butoxide in THF. The p-xylylene dibromide precursors were synthesized by reacting lithiated bis(methoxymethyl)benzenes with elemental selenium, followed by alkylation of the generated selenolates. As a final demasking step, the bromomethyl functions were liberated by ether cleavage using boron tribromide. Bis-alkylselenenyl PPV was obtained with an average molecular weight Mw of approximately 300,000 g/mol and with polydispersity Mw/Mn=2. Due to low solubility, monoalkylselenenyl PPV was obtained with a considerably lower average molecular weight in the proximity of 16,000 g/mol and with a polydispersity slightly larger than 3. Absorption and flourescence spectroscopy revealed that the bis-alkylselenenyl PPV is extensively conjugated.

  • Voxel-based morphometry multi-center mega-analysis of brain structure in social anxiety disorder
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: NeuroImage. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-1582. ; 16, s. 678-688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent and disabling mental disorder, associated with significant psychiatric co-morbidity. Previous research on structural brain alterations associated with SAD has yielded inconsistent results concerning the direction of the changes in gray matter (GM) in various brain regions, as well as on the relationship between brain structure and SAD-symptomatology. These heterogeneous findings are possibly due to limited sample sizes. Multi-site imaging offers new opportunities to investigate SAD-related alterations in brain structure in larger samples. An international multi-center mega-analysis on the largest database of SAD structural T1-weighted 3T MRI scans to date was performed to compare GM volume of SAD-patients (n = 174) and healthy control (HC)-participants (n = 213) using voxel-based morphometry. A hypothesis-driven region of interest (ROI) approach was used, focusing on the basal ganglia, the amygdala-hippocampal complex, the prefrontal cortex, and the parietal cortex. SAD-patients had larger GM volume in the dorsal striatum when compared to HC-participants. This increase correlated positively with the severity of self-reported social anxiety symptoms. No SAD-related differences in GM volume were present in the other ROIs. Thereby, the results of this mega-analysis suggest a role for the dorsal striatum in SAD, but previously reported SAD-related changes in GM in the amygdala, hippocampus, precuneus, prefrontal cortex and parietal regions were not replicated. Our findings emphasize the importance of large sample imaging studies and the need for meta-analyses like those performed by the Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium.

  • Increased plasma hyaluronan in severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5513 .- 1502-7686. ; 61:2, s. 131-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pre-eclampsia is a serious multi-system disorder with general endothelial disease, often with a component of hepatic dysfunction. The pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia is not fully understood, and no specific diagnostic tests are available for early and reliable diagnosis, or for monitoring of the disease process. Hyaluronan is an extracellular matrix polysaccharide present at low concentrations in plasma. Normally, it is rapidly eliminated from the blood by the liver. Increased concentrations of circulating hyaluronan are seen in conditions with impaired hepatic function such as liver cirrhosis, and hyaluronan concentrations have previously been used to evaluate hepatic function in other diseases. In the present study, 11 pregnant women admitted to the intensive care unit with severe pre-eclampsia or eclampsia were studied. As control 31 healthy pregnant women, 18 undergoing vaginal delivery and 13 caesarean section, were included. Plasma hyaluronan was measured before and after delivery. Increased concentrations of plasma hyaluronan were found in the pre-eclampsia group both before (171 (75-586) ╡g/L (p < 0.01) and after delivery (215 (124-768) ╡g/L (p < 0.001) (median and inter-quartile range), as compared to both caesarean section (13 (7-28) ╡g/L before and 28 (18-48) ╡g/L after delivery) and vaginal delivery healthy controls (12 (8-24) ╡g/L before and 30 (13-63) ╡g/L after delivery). In the control groups, a small increase in plasma hyaluronan was seen after delivery, after both caesarean section (p < 0.05) and vaginal delivery (p < 0.01). In conclusion, plasma hyaluronan is increased in severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. The cause of the increase is unknown.
