    • Material integration for the formation of advanced silicon-on-insulator materials by wafer bonding and etch-back is discussed. Wafer bonding allows the combining of materials that it is not possible to grow on top of each other by any other technique. In our experiments, polycrystalline diamond, aluminum nitride or aluminum oxide films with thickness of 0.1-5 μm were deposited on silicon wafers. Bonding experiments were made with these films to bare silicon wafers with the goal of forming silicon-on-insulator structures with buried films of polycrystalline diamond, aluminum nitride or aluminum oxide. These silicon-on-insulator structures are intended to address self-heating effects in conventional silicon-on-insulator materials with buried layers of silicon dioxide. The surfaces of the deposited diamond films were, by order of magnitude, too rough to allow direct bonding to a silicon wafer. In contrast the deposited aluminum nitride and aluminum oxide films did allow direct bonding to silicon. Bonding of the diamond surface to silicon was instead made through a deposited and polished layer of polycrystalline silicon on top of the diamond. In the case of the aluminum nitride electrostatic bonding was also demonstrated. Further, the compatibility of these insulators to silicon process technology was investigated

  • Solid-state phase behaviour of dodecylglycosides

    • The solid-state phase behaviour of lyophilised n-dodecyl-beta-D-glucoside (beta-C(12)G(1)), n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside (beta-C(12)G(2)) and n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltotrioside (beta-C(12)G(3)) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray techniques. For beta-C(12)G(1), lyophilisation results in a formation of a crystalline anhydrate. The lamellar spacing (37 angstrom) is consistent with an alkyl chain packing in which the chains are not interdigitated. At 80 degrees C, the material melts into a lamellar liquid crystal with a lamellar spacing of 32 angstrom, which suggests that the non-interdigitated chain packing of the crystalline state is retained in the liquid crystal. In contrast, lyophilisation of beta-C(12)G(2) and beta-C(12)G(3) results in the formation of a glassy state, best described as a frozen version of the lamellar liquid crystal. For beta-C(12)G(2), the lamellar spacing in the glass and liquid crystal suggests interdigitation of the alkyl chains. The glass transition temperature was found to be 65 degrees C for beta-C(12)G(3), and 100 degrees C for K12G3, which compares favourably with the glass transition of the parent carbohydrates. A second crystalline modification of beta-C(12)G(1) was prepared by precipitation from an aqueous solution at temperatures below the Krafft point (38 degrees C). For this modification, the lamellar distance (24 angstrom) is consistent with interdigitated alkyl chains. At 50 degrees C, the crystalline material melts into a liquid crystalline phase. The material also readily loses water and rapidly re-crystallises to the anhydrate. The amount of water lost upon drying is consistent with the idea that the material is a monohydrate of beta-C(12)G(1). The drying and re-crystallisation processes give rise to 'pre-transitions' in the DSC thermograms and illustrate the importance of careful control of water in any analysis of the phase behaviour of alkylglycosides.     • The thermotropic phase behaviour and phase structure of crystalline and non-crystalline n-tetradecyl-beta-D-maltoside (C(14)G(2)) and n-hexadecyl-beta-D-maltoside (C(16)G(2)) have been investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray techniques. Upon lyophilisation, both compounds form a solid, lamellar phase comprising disordered head groups and hexagonally packed alkyl chains that are suggested to be tilted and interdigitated. This ordered lamellar phase melts into a metastable lamellar liquid crystal, which re-crystallises to a high-temperature crystalline polymorph comprising interdigitated, non-tilted alkyl chains. Remarkably, the high-temperature polymorph of C(14)G(2) has the same melting point as that of C(16)G(2), namely 105 degrees C for both surfactants. A low-temperature polymorph of anhydrous C(14)G(2) crystallises from water at room temperature, whereas the hemihydrate of C(14)G(2) crystallises at 6 degrees C from water, or from chloroform containing trace water. X-ray data suggest both these crystalline modifications to comprise interdigitated and tilted alkyl chains.

    • The SWEDEGRAFT study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03501303) tests the hypothesis that saphenous vein grafts (SVGs) harvested with the "no-touch" technique improves patency of coronary artery bypass grafts compared with the conventional open skeletonized technique. This article describes the rationale and design of the randomized trial and baseline characteristics of the population enrolled during the first 9 months of enrollment. The SWEDEGRAFT study is a prospective, binational multicenter, open-label, registry-based trial in patients undergoing first isolated nonemergent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), randomized 1:1 to no-touch or conventional open skeletonized vein harvesting technique, with a planned enrollment of 900 patients. The primary end point is the proportion of patients with graft failure defined as SVGs occluded or stenosed >50% on coronary computed tomography angiography at 2 years after CABG, earlier clinically driven coronary angiography demonstrating an occluded or stenosed >50% vein graft, or death within 2 years. High-quality health registries and coronary computed tomography angiography are used to assess the primary end point. The secondary end points include wound healing in the vein graft sites and the composite outcome of major adverse cardiac events during the first 2 years based on registry data. Demographics of the first 200 patients enrolled in the trial and other CABG patients operated in Sweden during the same time period are comparable when the exclusion criteria are taken into consideration.

  • Automatic detection of burn-through in GMA welding using a parametric model

    • This paper addresses the problem of automatic detection of burn-through in weld joints. Gas metal arc (GMA) welding with pulsed current is used, and welding voltage and current are recorded. As short-circuitings are common between the welding electrode and the work piece during burn-through, a short-circuit detector is developed to detect these events. To detect another specific characteristic of burn-through - this detector is combined with a square-law detector. This second detector is based on a non-linear modification of an autoregressive model with extra input (ARX-model) of the welding process. The results obtained from this compound detector indicate that it is possible to detect burn-through in the welds automatically. The work also indicates that it is possible to design an on-line monitoring system for robotic GMA welding.

  • c-Kit-dependent growth of uveal melanoma cells : a potential therapeutic target?

    • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the expression and functional impact of the proto-oncogene c-kit in uveal melanoma. METHODS: Based on immunohistochemical (IHC) study of paraffin-embedded specimens from 134 uveal melanomas and Western blot analysis on eight fresh-frozen samples the expression of c-kit in uveal melanoma was studied. Furthermore, the phosphorylation of c-kit and the impact of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor STI571 was examined in the three uveal melanoma cell lines OCM-1, OCM-3, and 92-1. RESULTS: Eighty-four of 134 paraffin-embedded samples and six of eight fresh-frozen samples expressed c-kit. c-Kit was strongly expressed and tyrosine phosphorylated in cultured uveal melanoma cells compared with cutaneous melanoma cells. Moreover, in contrast to cutaneous melanoma cell lines c-kit maintained a high phosphorylation level in serum-depleted uveal melanoma cells. No activation-related mutations in exon 11 of the KIT gene were found. On the contrary, expression of the stem cell growth factor (c-kit ligand) was detected in all three uveal melanoma cell lines, suggesting the presence of autocrine (paracrine) stimulation pathways. Treatment of uveal melanoma cell lines with STI571, which blocks c-kit autophosphorylation, resulted in cell death. The IC(50) of the inhibitory effects on c-kit phosphorylation and cell proliferation was of equal size and less than 2.5 microM. CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm that c-kit is vastly expressed in uveal melanoma, suggest that the c-kit molecular pathway may be important in uveal melanoma growth, and point to its use as a target for therapy with STI571.

    • Background: Pain management in children after tonsil surgery is essential, and optimal pain treatment has been discussed for many years. Data from the National Tonsil Register in Sweden (NTRS) and a national mapping system have demonstrated the need for national pain treatment guidelines for pediatric tonsil surgery. As a result, Swedish national guidelines, together with updated patient information on the website tonsilloperation.se, were developed and implemented in 2013.Objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate the professionals’ opinions of and adherence to pain treatment guidelines for pediatric tonsil surgery patients in a two-year follow-up.Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was based on data from an inter-professional questionnaire, which was validated by an expert group using a content validity index (S-CVI 0.93). The questionnaire was sent to all Swedish ear, nose and throat (ENT) departments (n=49) that the NTRS identified as performing tonsil surgery on children younger than 18 years of age. In each clinic, we asked for responses from staff in each of the following professions: ENT physicians, anesthesia physicians, registered nurse anesthetists, and registered nurses in the ENT departments.Results: Respondents from 48 ENT departments participated, and 139/163 (85%) completed questionnaires were returned. The guidelines were reported as being clear, ensuring patient safety and providing optimal pharmacological treatment. Treatment was given according to the guidelines: Half of the departments gave pre- or intraoperative treatment with clonidine, betamethasone and high-dose paracetamol (acetaminophen). A multimodal pain approach (paracetamol and COX inhibitors) after hospital discharge was prescribed by all departments after tonsillectomy and, more extensively, after tonsillotomy. One-third of the departments prescribed paracetamol with a higher normal dose for the first three postoperative days. Half of the departments prescribed rescue analgesics, clonidine or opioids after tonsillectomy. None of the departments prescribed codeine or tramadol, drugs that are discouraged in the guidelines. The majority of the departments used the website tonsilloperation.se to provide information to the patients and their caregivers.Conclusion: The respondents' opinions of and the ENT departments adherence to the Swedish national guidelines were considered to be good. The national implementation process in Sweden has impacted the manner in which ENT departments treat pain after tonsil surgery.
